It's not quite that simple. Firstly the dole is fuck all. If you can afford to survive on it with zero outside assistance you're probably getting some form of DSP, not just unemployment, which means you're basically being paid to keep out of the way until you die.

But let's set that aside for a moment. If you're in a relatively populated city and still live with the folks, sure. You've got no real excuse for not finding at least SOMETHING, the pay might be utter shit, but you can start saving and upskilling.

If you live even slightly regional though? Difficulty just scaled WAY up. Regional works projects don't often hire from within the community because there simply isn't the staff and it's more economical for companies to simply run through a recruitment firm in one of the major cities. Prevalence of online shopping and improved shipping (ausfailia post nonwithstanding) means there's even less of an impetus for customers to pay the necessary cost hikes present with buying from a local supplier. For example some regional towns only open their general store a few days a week because there simply isn't the demand to keep the place viable opening even mon-fri, because Woolworths will ship groceries for less than it costs for a local to buy them from the corner store.

So let's say you're a neet in one of these areas, your only real option is to move to the city. Where are you going to stay? Rent's at ridiculous levels, and remember you don't even HAVE a job at this point, shit-paying or not, and if your parents are in the soon-to-be ghost town, they probably can't afford to front you the month or so it's realistically going to take you to get yourself organized.

Static work is how you make money mostly in security when starting off. I have worked a lot of static and patrol. I worked for two of the largest security companies in Aus (subcontracted of course) and the jobs I did when I first started out are done by curry munchers, niggers and muzzies now. To the guy looking for a security job, its still a good job if you need cash. Bouncing is good if your fellow bouncers know their stuff. Getting into loss prevention is probably the best bet now. I never did it though because I am too short tempered.

I guess that summarises how bad things are around the metro areas then, because I've been working out in the wheatbelt because the job market in labouring has been lousy for the past few years and there is more demand for workers in the rural areas.
