Forced diversity is seen by anyone who knows how to detect it, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee they won't pick up those games. Remember, diversity started to get pushed hard in the industry in about 2012, so it's about to the point where AAA titles were very early in development when the shift happened are being released. The good news is that the diversity niche that indies previously held will likely eradicate as a result of it, and we might finally get some semi-decently written "diverse" characters as a result. Alternatively, the games could fail, showing that it's not something that consumers on a large scale really necessarily desire. Titles like Sunset showed hints of this on a smaller scale. The bad news, of course, is that it will likely lead to the increased politicization of games. Watch Dogs 2 is a blatant example.

Simply put, whether or not this will actually help them is ultimately up in the air. I honestly believe that, at best (for the companies), it will have no impact on sales. Until developing countries are at a financial and cultural point where video games are widely played, there will be virtually no untapped demographics to take in. Pretty much anyone who has access to video games currently has either played them, or has zero interest in them.

And alternatives to at least IGDA and GDC have been popping up as of late, although they still have a lot of growing to do. Baby steps.

Going back to 3DO, it was the cinematic console of the decade. And the best selling game on the platform was Gex, which had hardly any cinematic experiences (minus the fact that it made a lot of pop culture references).

It seems like they push cinematic games every couple of years, or every decade or so. And they always fail. But it looks like this time they want to hitch their wagon to social justice and claiming to want to appeal to a wider audience with more accessible games.

You can think of the push for diversity as something similar to what's going on in Europe. They might be trying to out the people who make up the dominant forces in the market, and ultimately get rid of the games and game mechanics that we've come to appreciate.
