What is sequence breaking?

I dont even know what the fuck do you mean by that. Anyway, vid related

Yes, if you have to break the game to get the fastest time, it shouldn't count.

What does sequence mean? What does breaking mean? That's your answer.

sequence breaking is perfectly legitimate, just like any glitch is.

How does that apply to speedrunning or video games?

Be more specific you faggot.

Sequence breaking isn't always cheating. That term is broad as hell.

Taking the Master Key to skip the Depths isn't cheating. Backflipping your way from inside the Deku Tree to the final boss is.

Of course it's cheating
The question is whether or not that precludes it from being legitimate speedrunning, which of fucking course it doesn't since the vast majority of speedrunning is a challenge of how much arcane bullshit you can do to a game to lessen the completion time, and not actual efficient gameplay

Technically, cheating as you skip through parts of the game in such a way you might as well as select the last level of a game and beat that.

Although to be fair, I don't give a shit, speedrunning is a stupid concept, all it is bragging rights about how quickly you complete the game… instead of enjoying the game…?

I'm half and half.

Maybe the solution is to have a category for speed runs where people do glitches and shit while the other is for full game speed runs without it.

By cutting out a chunk of the game you can go through it faster you double nigger.

But if "cheating" is it's own category, is there really a problem?

It's legit, mostly.
Sequence Breaking is a huge amd vague term.
Like, one thing that counts as sequence breaking is wrong-warping.
And that shit is cheap.

It's categorically specified by what kind of run so we don't have in to that issue. Anybody who whines sequence braking isn't legit is retarded.

Is it exploiting flaws in the game engines? If so, it's cheating. Not that it matters in a single player game.

I guess of its do it as quick as you can with tools then its fine.

*with OUT tools

FUCKING THIS JESUS FUCK

It's a category for a reason

Excellent work, user.

Does it really matter? There are different categories for speedrunning, some which allow sequence breaking and some that don't.

Someone beat me to it

Do ylu faggots even know how to define cheating? It should be defined as using 3rd party progeams or changing the gams0es code to do things you shouldnt be able to do. Sequence breaking is not cheating, nor is using glitches.

Why does that gibbon(?) have a laptop?

How else does he browse gibbon porn? hope a 7/11 has it on the top rack?

It's all decided on a game to game basis, depending on what categories people want to run. Debating this is completely pointless.

I'm going to go with a who care the rules are arbitrary and decided by the general speed run community of the game for 500 bob.

This.

Sequence breaking is basically the same as using glitches during a speedrun.

Which is to say, if you don't want that shit, just watch "glitchless speedruns". Lord knows why though since watching someone just playing a game really quickly is dull as fuck. Speedruns become entertaining when you see someone breaking the ever loving fuck out of a game.

This, they made categories for runs because this type of autism.

Speedrunning isn't just "playing the game as intended but really fast".
If you hate sequence breaks then go watch a 100% run or No Skips run. There's a reason speedruns have multiple categories, you know.

Fuck that. Time for some real fun.

Sonic the Hedgehog speedruns:
In-game time or real time?

Here user.

Why do people post this all the time?

You could essentially swap this entire argument out with video games in general. You're still wasting your time doing something unproductive but fun.

difference is that speedrunners don't have fun doing what they do.

Because they can't comprehend why people would like what they don't like and are too mentally incapable to form a coherent argument against speedrunning, so they post this video of a salty bitch saying lots of bad words about it and acting like it proves that speedrunning shouldn't exist. Not a fan of speedrunning, by the way.

Go away evil dogger

when i smoke weed i'm unproductive
when i listen to music i'm unproductive
when i read a book i'm unproductive
when i watch a movie i'm unproductive
when i watch a serie i'm unproductive
when i go to shool i'm unproductive
when i go fuckign my #girlfriend' i'm unproductive
when i go to wrok i'm unproductive
when i shitpost i'm unproductive
when i pay my bills i'm unproductive
when i drink alcohol i'm unproductive

sorry for not being like everyone else and not as productive as everyone else, i just simpel don't care.

Some do.

so do the warp pipes in Mario count or is there something more specific??? you nigger

Normally you're either experiencing a variety of vidya or playing one multiplayer vidya whereby you'll at least get some social interaction and feel like your skill at the game has some meaning when playing against others.

Speedrunning entails shutting yourself off from others to play the same game, or even just the same sequence of a single player game, which in most cases was only ever intended to be played once, over and over.

I mean I enjoy watching speedruns, but it's not something I would ever do myself.

There are multiple categories of speedrunning

Sometimes a speedrun is boring as fuck if it doesn't use glitches

Sometimes a speedrun is boring as fuck if it does use major glitches and doesnt showcase gameplay skill

The concept of boring/not boring of course existing only an autists mind

Speedrunning is default shit, but don't be autistic and pretend there is one form of speed run that is 'better' than the other in a sweeping generalization when it's clear which method is best for the speed run is purely contextual to the game

That's so fucking stupid. This guy made an argument against something that he's actually doing. I can't use his argument? Am I not allowed to use any of the words he used in his little rant too? How far removed from his statements do I have to be before I can tell you that something someone does is dumb and you provide me with a counter-statement that isn't some childish bullshit like "lel you dun like it, dun do it?"

You stupid fucking cocksucker. Just because people don't like a thing doesn't mean a conversation can't be had about whether or not it's a thing that's even worth pursuing.

I'm surprised this thread is as civil as it is. I guess people finally got tired of trolling about this shit. I wonder if people have gotten tired of trolling about competitive Smash rules yet.

Can't you also die since that resets the timer? In game is best because going slow for point countdown is stupid. I'm pretty sure Sonic speedrunners already have a sort of honor system to not seriously abuse that shit anyway so they won't care until some autist comes in and gets a really good time with a retarded amount of pause buffer abuse and at that point they'll just make a new category that requires no or lower than a set amount of pause buffering.

Boring or not boring absolutely exists, it's just not an objective standard and can change depending on the circumstances.

Watching an autist break the shit out of a game with frame perfect accuracy is entertaining. Watching an autist play the game quickly isn't entertaining

I see your point. Though you could always do both. And if a game is good enough the community would probably be sizable. But I don't really know how useful social interaction would be if it's singleplayer.

You could also associate more with the people who speedrun the game if you get good enough at it, but then again isn't most of the speedrun community SJW shit?

That's pretty meta discussion m8.

In any case he's not very far off. You can't necessarily debate with somebody over why their hobby is shit if they genuinely enjoy it. You might bring up some valid points, but it's still a hobby. It doesn't have to be deemed worthy of pursuing by the public to be any less engaging by the person/people who associates with it. But calling somebodies opinion shit isn't going to change a mind. If I have fun with a game and you say it's shit does it nullify my fun?

If you can sequence break through legit game methods (Warp Pipes in Mario, Master Key in Dark Souls), then it is speedrunning.
If you sequence break through glitches, then it is a TAS

Someone hasn't seen any Zelda game get speedrun, because that's full of doing things out of order.

That's a Brazillian, you asshole. Show some respect.

Evil dogger is so cute.

What does its curse even do?

Go away evil dogger.

Is that dirty tranny still alive?

You can't think of anything but bitches and eating your own puke anymore.

I want to tap that.

She is cute, but looks a bit high or something. Who is that?

So i would turn into a SJW White Knight Writer for Gawker? How Horrifying!

I know this is bait but it's too good to pass up

Stop trying to rile people up user.

Wrong. TAS stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun; which generally means some form of macro or other peripheral technology.
Though all the speedrunners I've seen generally just get really good at button mashing and opt out of using macros.

I just found this image, does anyone know which speedrun this is from?

go away evil dogger

I like how it's become passe on Holla Forums to like speedruns. What happened?

AGDQ's decline.

I only like them if it turns into a showcase of how hard you fucked this game's coding in the ass. If it's just a guy playing really fast then in all honesty I don't find that entertaining.

...

What said and also how fun NASA was.

Depends.
Is the sequence break accounted for like all of super metroid, or is it something like the bug in mafia 2 where you can throw yourself to the final mission area, die on impact and beat the game from there as soon as the war section ends?

It's an exploit. In the sense of speedrunning I think these tricks are legit, as long as it's something possible to do in the game by itself and without the assistance of other tools, hacks, mods or programs.

Usually when I take a glance at speedrunning, I see it's old games that aren't even patched anymore. Personally, I don't have an interest in speedrunning, and it only seems interesting remotely if it's an online RPG and I want to get more characters at the end game to fill in a functionality at some kind of dungeon run for a guild/clan.

Its both legit and cheating, that is why there are usually several speedrunning categories.

Fastest time by breaking the game as much as possible and fastest time without glitching out of any intended challenges are equally worthy achievments.

Depending on the game trying to beat the "cheating allowed" record is much harder than 100% no damage runs too.

So tantalizingly close to revelation here.

As anyone that isn't a faggot has already said, there already are different categories for those who want to beat the game as fast as humanly possible and those who want to do the same, but without certain glitches.

Since it's pretty fucking hard to draw any sort of line between glitch and not-glitch that isn't totally arbitrary, speedrunners usually only use objective criteria, like banning certain ludicrously powerful glitches (like ACE or wrong-warp).

Speedrunning has a community I don't think I understand. There's one speedrunner I keep seeing from, and most of the time I think I'm seeing either some kind of catty drama or some really aggressive/insulting facetious (?) comments.

Cool Spot

Why are you even posting this faggot, he is a fucking redditor that can't spend 30 seconds without ranting about how things aren't going the way he likes or calling anything and everything degenerates which for some fucking reason doesn't stop him from grinding Goldeneye ILs which has got to be the most mind numbing shit an human has ever subjected himself to.

Is the category "no cheats"? then it's cheating.
But if its "any %", no cheat.

When you speedrun a game, you're aiming to complete the game as fast as possible, by any means possible.
If it's 'legit' or not only matters when there's arbitrary rules being laid down.

There's that sort of sequence breaking, and then there's abusing geometry in a game in order to skip large sections that never would have been intended. A good example of that would be the first level of Shrine of Storms in DeS, as there's a tower that you can roll off a specific way that skips virtually the entire level.

any% is defined as "beat the game as fast as possible using any means necessary".
sometimes there's "glitchless%" or other categories that don't allow specific exploits, but generally "any%" is what people follow for most games.

people that moan about how "using exploits is cheating" are generally more autistic than the people actually speedrunning the games.

Speed running is fucking gay and if any of you care about it reevaluate your life.

No

It's more entertaining than watching a normal speedrun
youtube.com/watch?v=zXLnNnmbwtY

Wow, what a meanie.

didn't mean to reply, oops

Does anyone actually enjoy games when speedrunning? I've never understood the concept, much less the catte willing to watch others perform it. Please enlighten me

Dante must die mode:
Is it still legit speedrunning if the game is broken to the point where it becomes a Turing-complete computer and allows you to execute arbitrary code?

There's plenty of "categories" of speedrunning. There's speedruns where you have to, say, play every single level of a Mario Bros. game instead of using any warps. There's speedruns where warps are allowed, and those where glitch-abuse is allowed, and TAS is allowed, and so on and so forth.

In the context of video games, "cheating" only has one proper definition, and that is: "to gain an unfair advantage over other players by breaking rules" similar to the definition used for sports. Since a speedrun is a single-player endeavor, it's impossible to "cheat", even if you ARE breaking the rules.

It's no longer a speedrun; it's just messing around with the game.

Some people do and some people don't I do

It's basically score autism applied to other games with a slightly different metric, if you never cared for challenge runs you probably won't ever get it.

Why wouldn't it?
As long as you're still using just the game and a normal controller there's no reason to consider it cheating, people tend to stray away from ACE category since they're rarely hard to optimize (Wild Arms 1 might be the one exception I can think of) and make for very boring runs after the first watch.

Fast is fast. If you stop youirself from being fast, then you suck, and aren't fast enough. If the game is practically begging for mercy and braking down from how fast you are, then your speed is good.

No one posted this autism yet?

Well, "performing the final thing" most likely no.
But you know, to use the exploits, first you have to find em and figure the way to use em in realtime etc etc etc..
So basically you turn the game into another game with a fuckton of depth, because the code itself of the game counts, and its basically this insane awesome game of detective/science.

You mean like the categories glitchless and any% that already exist?

Holy fuck those comments

That actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks for educating me

Fun fact: The butterfly stroke in swimming was originally technically considered breaststroke because of the way the rules were written, before all of the top swimmers started using butterfly (because it's faster). This prompted the Olympics to change the rules of breaststroke and open a new category, butterfly.

What's my point? My point is that, like watching swimmers of the time abusing the rules to shave seconds off of their times, it's fucking fun to see how autists people have abused a game's code to shave seconds, minutes, even hours off of normal times. It's a combination of skill and intense knowledge of the subject on full display.

This isn't even areal question. Of course sequence breaking is legit.

Should be it's own category, as usually it is.

I find it interesting, I love watching people breaking the game apart, either by pure skill, or crazy glitches, or both

That isn't a sequence break, though killing Ornstein and Smough before Belltower Gargoyles would be one

It's a reddit thread

chicken

Well then it almost comes down to what you consider the 'sequence'. Do you have to do certain places in order? I'm trying to think of games where you can break the sequence through tricks like Ocarina of Time; doing Jabu Jabu before death mountain by jumping past the rocks with the chicken.

It's speedrunning. If people found a faster way to do something, I can't see how its wrong.

Who's this faggot again?

I'd wreck that boypussy

do speedrunners even enjoy the games they play after resetting it seventy times in a row ?

Do you enjoy hard games?

"o shit, MAGA"

Speed running is gay shit for stupid people.

No one cares how few seconds it takes you to bang the princess in Mario 1.

...

This is exactly how normalfags talk
>>>/out/

...

Go away evil dogger.

Wouldn't you be recording and posting a video anyway? It would prove that you cheated.

this

Forgot to post this

It fucking hurts my brain.

Why do people do this, holy shit.

It depends what kind of run you're doing, mate. If it's any% then it's fine.
You're clearly not autistic enough for speedrunning.

They're different fucking categories. How is this difficult? A contest of who can beat it the fastest doing everything is completely different from who can beat it the fastest not doing everything. Fucking sage, this thread is gay.

I heard in OoT you can skip the Ganon fight and go right the credits, what category will that be? Faggot.

...

Any%, you speedrun-illiterate.

TOP KEK

If the trick make the gale faster than the current fastest and humanly doable then any%, if it's not any faster then there's little incentive to run it so no category or ganonskip% if you want to run meme category.

if the game allows the exploit then it's fine

there must be a difference between tricking the game into skipping parts of sequence or levels by using regular game mechanics or operations like saving/loading to make player indefinitely jump in unreal and blatant cheating like console commands though

"o shit, MAGA"

By that logic, there is no cheating in Olympics events that people do one at a time. Fucking retard.

I'm pretty sure if you record yourself going to the final map with console commands and giving yourself Godmode, that would be considered cheating.

Like said, it'd probably just get its own silly name and not get taken seriously. Now, out of curiosity, are you gay in addition to being dumb?

here's a question then

if we count the game time counted by the game timer and not the external timer, does it mean running the console for several years and beating the game right after timer overflows into 0 makes it the fastest speedrun ever possible in the game?

Pffffffffffffff, 100% or gtfo, No out of bounce any% is okay. Anyone want some dumps from the white knighting of a Link to the Past "gurl" speedrunner whos category got blown the fuck out when new skips were found.

Pre-recorded speedrunning is retarded anyway. Speedruns should be held with competitors sitting side-by-side doing it in real time, like real racing sports.

Do you understand what the point of any% is, user?

Speedrunning isn't a sport, it's more of a competive hobby

I use to run Zelda II, there were 7 categories, so yes. I know any%.

TAS are fucking awesome. Check out this one, skip to the gambit stage. Fuckers were brilliant.
17:10 is when it starts.

...

Nah man, I prefer skill.

Someone just wrote a bot that plays a game really well. Explain why this isn't gay.

How can bots be gay?

Almost ALMOST like that's exactly what they already fucking do
pointed it out, all the speedrunning categories are basically determined by the actual runners themselves with a healthy dose of tradition. There's a reason why Mario64 has 0-star, 120-star and everything in between with various categories dropping the backwards long jump or some people trying to do it with as little a presses as possible despite what "Henry" might say

There is a similar case on pokemon yellow, where you can end it in 0:00 by its internal timer.
But nobody, NOBODY use the internal clock as the speedrun clock due several reasons like the game intro not counting and purposeful manipulation.

Then what do you consider the which should be more important in a category? Any% or 100% ?

Pretty sure nobody actually writes input testing bots unless the game is insanely optimized already like MMX, TAS are generally just people redoing shit over and over (the rerecord count is how many times they reloaded a saved state) and recording a series of inputs of it.

it's legit speedrunning. I don't have the time to wait an extra six hours to get to the end just because you'll have an autistic hissy fit in the Youtube comments.

Too game dependent to make a clear cut judgement like that, hell in some games neither of those is considered the best category.

...

...

I would fug this tranny.
If this is you OP, you're really cute and I want to snuggle you.

TIME FOR ALTERNATE UNIVERSES.

You're retarded if you think this is OP
Its Cosmo/Narcissa Wright a somewhat well known speedrunner

I'm with you, fam. Cheating is when you break the rules of a competition. In a videogame, the 'rules' are the game's mechanics, which can be warped and abused to achieve your goal, but ultimately have to be obeyed. In real life, rules can be changed and updated to prevent loopholes and abuse, but not so much in games unless the devs patch it.

...

The man that lost so hard on a nintendo event, his masculinity was took away.

Faggot

thanks for the reminder, watching pannenkoek's most recent videos now

I love pannenkoek

"Sequence breaking"… I guess you mean bugs/glitches in general that allow you to skip parts of the game and other shit. It's most certainly not cheating if you can do it within the game, without any tools or modifying the game. Many games have build-in cheats, so as long as you don't use that, it's fine.

I often see comments about glitches in the runs… Do it without bugs ! and shit like that. It doesn't really make any sense. It's like crippling yourself. There are things that you can do to help reach your goal and you should always use them. Besides, how do you know something is a bug and not intended feature ?

Consider this example. In GTA3 there's a mission where you need to kill someone. If you get close enough to him the cutscene will play and he will run away. However, you can shot him from the distance and pass the mission much quicker. Is that cheating ? For me it's just an oversight.

I agree. Just going through the game normally but quickly is pretty boring to watch.

It doesn't matter. It's all arbitrary.

Oh my god, cosmo. You used to be such a cool dude

I don't see how this is any different from a TASed speedrun. Except instead of going for the least amount of time to complete a thing, going for the least amount of input on a certain crucial button.

this To Be Honest Shaking My Head Family Members

It's fun.

It's the same argument as "HALF A-PRESSES DON'T COUNT!", and I don't rule on the side of Holla Forumstards for similar reasons. If you're the best at a game, you get to decide the rules. End of story.
It's like accusing a scientist for not following the "creationist scientific method" or some bullshit. Who the hell cares, really? Speedrunners don't need to fucking live up to the patrician standards of you faggots, they have more important things to do. Like playing video games.

O shit, MAGA

I love speedruns with annotations.
