I remember around 2010 when I thought that Facebook would inevitably fail in short order, just like Myspace did. Yet here we are.
Sometime around 2008, these social media behemoths arose, and don't look to be going away any time soon. It's obvious that they receive state funding and operate at a loss just to monopolize and keep users contained on one site for data mining purposes.
In any event, Youtube is the centralized video uploading site. The state will do everything in it's power to ensure that there is never a major migration away from it. Hell, other corporations probably would prop it up too. They much rather deal with just YT then have to sign contracts to advertise on dozens of decentralized video upload sites.
If you want some degree of freedom, cross uploading is OK, but ultimately you are going to need to own your own website and just post your own content there. And in fact, I am more and more convinced that this is the true life cycle of the internet. Just as with nations, the internet starts out free and open, and is over time consolidated, and consolidated, over and over and over. Until things get so centralized, and so shitty, that the whole system breaks down. I have no idea what the chaotic stage of the internet is going to look like, but it's safe to assume we are all going to love it.
At some point however, the dust will settle and the internet might look reminiscent of maybe the 2003ish internet. Kids will be making their own modern versions of Xanga pages with the ability to upload videos and other modern twists. You will actually need individual accounts and passwords for different websites because there won't be this centralized widget shit letting you log in from Facebook. Internet celebrities will once again be people more like Maddox and the like, who post edgy content on their own website.
Or to come back more to the point, there will never be a competitor to Youtube. There isn't going to be some rival free speech video upload site, with equal relevancy. Not until the centralization of the internet is destroyed, chaos takes hold, and a period of decentralization reigns. Then, after the reset, as the internet begins to consolidate and get shitty again, some big monopoly video uploading site will exist again, and we can start this cycle over again.
