Had it been Estival it would have likely sold way better, but the sales will still probably spike once the price drops a bit. As of right now, ~20k sales in the opening days is pretty fucking strong for a Vita game ported to PC, and unlike console the sales will continue to steadily trickle in over the next year or two until Estival comes out.

Spike Chunsoft considers 20-30k a success for their DanganRonpa series, and while that definitely was made on a lesser budget than Senran Kagura, I don't think Senran Kagura has that much more of it to be honest.

Plus Steam Sales are where the majority of the cash is made, so relax, it will make it's money back, especially since the Vita already made it's money back and this is more of a bonus round for them anyway.

Ok, let me tell you a story.

A long time ago i was watching Dynasty Warriors videos, and they seemed like the shittiest thing on earth to me.
The animations were stiff, the gameplay seemed too simple, the graphics looked like fucking shit, the map looked plain and bare, and the dialogues sounded absolutely retarded.

But since i'm the kind of person that tries things before bashing them, i went out and got a DW game.
So i played it, then i played it some more, and i ended up becoming a musou addict because of the tons of content and replay value these games have, and all the characters you end up liking, and the various situations they find themselves in, it sucks you in and then gives you fanservice, both in the form of waifu bait, but also in the form of "here's this character that you like, here's an interesting situation where he interacts with this other character that you like" and so on.

Were my initial impressions wrong?
Not really, all my initial criticism was only validated by playing those games, the gameplay was too simple, the graphics were indeed shit, the dialogues were laughable and most of the characters were really vapid and two dimensional.
But i still liked the games, because it tickled my need for content and replay value in video games, the lasting appeal.

The point i'm trying to make is that you can like something, and at the same time admit that it's objectively pretty shitty.
You can like something that caters to YOU yet it's not good from an objective point of view.
Just because YOU personally like something it doesn't automatically make that thing good by association.

This is something a shit ton of people on Holla Forums just refuse to accept because they're insecure as fuck about themselves.
One can like Senran an be addicted to the games without thinking they're objectively good games, or being surprised when the rest of the world thinks they're shit and doesn't buy them, the two things aren't mutually exclusive.

Starfox Zero wasn't a main line Nintendo title and if you knew anything Starfox has become a fucking niche series after 64 and Adventures. Every game since Assault has only seen sub 75k sales. Starfox Zero is actually selling less than 64 3D. And Nintendo didn't do anything with the series for a decade. It's niche by most standards, especially when the arcade 3d scrolling shooter genre is relatively dead.

I don't know if you realize this, but fun is subjective. What may be fun for you may not be fun for the other. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is my favourite game of all time, moreso than GOTY's like Doom and Deus Ex, but I acknowledge its mistakes and have written an entire .txt on things Dark Messiah does wrong.
A game can have objective flaws such as bugs, design flaws, poor level design, an unfitting artstyle, and so on. It depends on the person how much someone is willing to overlook those individual flaws and enjoy the game, while to someone else those flaws might make or break the game. Sometimes one aspect of a game was so executed well that you were willing to overlook all the other problems, but you should be able to understand that not everyone will overlook them.

Nobody (sane) thought Fallout 4 was a good game, not even the Game Awards. It's just a mindless non-RPG designed to be as convenient and satisfying to the player as possible. A casual might love Fallout 4, while someone with standards will think it's absolute garbage and a poor example of an RPG. I genuinely enjoyed Drakengard, but I admit that its combat was fuck-awful and there are many, MANY other better examples of musou combat out there.

The problem with just categorizing games between 'I liked it' and 'I didn't like it' is that it stifles criticism and doesn't allow for a whole lot of room for future improvement. When a developer asks you what he should do to make the sequel better and you only told him the things you liked, he wouldn't have a lot to go on. What's the point of discussions at all if someone said he thought a game was fun, you thought it wasn't, and then both of you enter a shitflinging contest trying to convince eachother why the game is(n't) fun?

Also, if a dev asks you, you would recommend them to add more fun features and correct mistakes on the design that affect your enjoyment of the game, not "add this because doom is goty and has it". Also discussion it's not limited as you say, we can talk about things we found or couldn't found fun, or suggest ways to enjoy the game to someone who couldn't, to see if then the game "works" on him. Kinda like:

Probably one major issue is that the game looks like shit-smeared ass. The up-scaling is abysmal. I mean, I loved playing the game on Vita, but the texture up-scaling looks absolutely horrendous. At least it runs 60FPS and has AA now, but given how shitty the textures still look, that's not much of a comfort.

If there were an HD mod, or if they had improved the textures, maybe it would've done better.

Of course, there was only a PSVita version to work with, in this instance, since Shinovi Versus never released to PS3/PS4; it was Vita-excusive.

With Estival Versus however, they can port the PS4 version instead of the Vita version, meaning higher quality textures. Unless they totally get lazy/jew out and port the Vita version, then that would just be shitty. Because the Vita version of Estival doesn't look much better than Shinovi did.

If you go into SK expecting only fap bait, I mean you'll get the fair share of it, but the characters are worth staying for. Their back-stories, for the most part, are DEEPESTLORE-tier, which I find enjoyable, in an ironic sense. Plus it has plenty of slapstick humor in cutscenes. It's certainly not a game for everyone, but I would imagine that the people who are interested by it would actually enjoy it, going in expecting just fap bait and getting something actually enjoyable and then fapping after they play

You could probably run it at some definition of playable framerate. The minimum specifies a Nvidia GTS 450, which is a $130 budget GPU from 5 years ago. Modern iGPU should be able to match that easily. Can always pirate it to find out for sure.

The numbers for both this and Onechanbara actually are pretty good for their usual sales at release in nipland.

They have always been extremely niche low budget games with really small fanbases (that I always thought they deserved more sales).

Senran Kagura also benefited of the aggressive marketing and shilling that Marvelous took over the years, and xseed actually tried to create awareness for the series on western markets (and the recent pc port). D3 just dropped the game on steam without previous notice, not even in japanese sites.

RE: sales, I guess it's a genre the west has never really had much of, particularly on PC, particularly recently (meaning new generation PC gamers aren't aware of it), it doesn't look that great for a PC title, there's no marketing at all for it (in fairness, hard to do) and PC gamers have never really celebrated anime style titles, in my experience.

I'd say it was consistent with sales of other Japanese anime styled exported pop culture at a guess.

It runs on integrated graphics, it has native borderless fullscreen window and you can rebind controls for both keyboard and gamepad. The biggest flaw it has that it can only run up to 60fps.

I just finished playing Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on my psone. It reminded me what good writing and voice acting can do. We ain't gonna get that in current gen. Pisses me off now that U4 and tlou gets praise and those games are shit compared to Soul Reaver.
