Can fuck around with non-game items in the level like toilets and sinks and hand dryers etc etc

It adds to immersion. Being able to pick up things in Deus Ex, turn off lights and such made you or me think. Think about it away from it. Really want to get back in.

Non standard interaction should have some reward though.

Aha, carrying around boxes to jump over fences and on things. Looking for secret paths and precious mods. Going everywhere for them. Also lore, which was thought material too. Really a game trying to be something meaningful and make the world better.

It rarely adds anything to the core game. Games are best when the focus on centralized mechanics. The closest any game got to making interacting with the environment an important part of its game play was something like HL2.

Actually, I take that back. the Yakuza games are the best example because they actually use it for meaningful gameplay related to games central elements and not as pretentious circlejerking of their technology.

A Deus Ex like game could have a very long way before problems are fixed. Long waits and expansive areas. You may have fixes in mind, but no way to them, so help everything you are confronted with or choose to. What you can you should do. Forward progression a secret. Understand the problem deeper, more reason to fix it. See why it is happening. Who, how it can. Who What Where Why. When you get where you go, weary of defences. Higher paid security closer to a problem. More confrontational material. Temptation should be an absurdity by then.

No happy ever after, just things not getting worse by the problem you address. A trap perhaps to go on forever to problems, just led by them, and to fix problems.

Logical uses for items at least in a game. A lot more than distractions. See something with little chance of being found, carry it until there is a place for it to be. May come in useful along the way. Or definately won't be but shouldn't be destroyed. It would be nice to think things work out. Better journeys. People that can make better use of them. Go fuck it and carry everything anyway. Push things where they are meant to be and fuck any option to lighten the load.

The Darkness had movies on TVs in game. Stuff like that to just be in a place. People talking to eachother, something like that as the focus. Join in the conversation or join in just by being near them. Reacting to what you do, everything reacting to you and to the existant and subsequent actions of npcs. Continual effect too.

Could make a gane with hours or infinate subsequent actions. Not a gimmic related to gameplay, just more complexity to the place.

Minute to non existant continuations of that in going to an entirely different location far away. Maybe missing that and if returning having missed out on developments. Missing characters too. No new ones you don't care about though even if that is realistic. Introductions to new people perhaps. Going around, company influencing the vibe of a place. Weather, lights and ambiance all doing their part in making areas… have distractions everywhere.

Everything offering an enjoyable memory. Challenging ones could be a way to progressive interactions that continue the story eg going walking in the rain.

Not really. The AI can just get confused over a sudden appearance of a drawing, it doesn't need to understand what is drawn on the wall.

I always made sure to grab the toilet brush in timesplitters 3, covering your enemies in shit before killing them felt good.

You could get probably get image recognition working fairly well for a few things. If you got the game to recognize genitals, swastikas, and mundane things like arrows or faces you'd cover most of what people would draw.
I'm no computer scientist but surely simple shapes like that wouldn't be entirely impossible to recognize.

having the enemy look at your grafiti with randomly chosen responses that are vague enough to apply to any graffiti like "i don't remember that here" or "well that's not very nice" would be far easier and probably funner for palyers to work with

Something like an arrow pointing in some direction could be very useful though. You might use them to disrupt guard patrol routes, by encouraging them to go somewhere the arrow points to investigate.

in that case id want a menu of different graffiti types that serve functions (people follow it right, people look at it confused, etc) and also the ability to draw whatever

that way the wrong function wouldn't be called upon and you can still dick around with a pen or spraycan

Crysis had every object pick up. You could use a fucking coffee cup to stun and enemy if you threw it hard enough. Could toss a keyboard to distract, launch an explosive barrel or even power melee a skip, vehicle or large object off a platform to move with it for cover or crush someone with it.

Modern vidya is such trash, we never see that kind of stuff anymore.

My favorite was in Golden Eye 64 where everything you shot would explode.
