A++ if you're into this sub-genre. Avoid otherwise, casualfags for sure cannot into Wizardry clones.

The art style is what makes it, it's nice to play a real blobber that doesn't look like garbage.

NOPA.

Isn't it a NISA release?

For some reason, any and all games in this sub-genre being handled by NISA come over completely fine. Demon Gaze had lolis walking around in their underwear at points and it wasn't edited at all.

Does it use Denuvo?
No?
Is it censored?
No?
Problem solved

Thanks for the input, I want to see other opinions before I wasts bandwith with it.

Yeah, there's nothing to censor and it still uses Japanese voice-overs. The translation might be off, but from what I saw I doubt it. No memeing that I saw. Not to mention this isn't a story-focused game.

torrent when

Been playing on vita cause im a special edition buyfag

Its great and nisa didnt touch it

What kind of game is it?

why does this game look like a browser game

Probably because it's a Vita game, user.

It was developed for PC first, actually.

Should really kill yourself tbh fam

You first reddit

I heard that Experience self-published the game on the Xbone. I was hoping that would would be the case for the PC version as well, but it looks like I'm out of luck. Guess I'll have to pass on this one.

Depends on the dev team and whether or not they care about their game. I know Kadokawa were permanently on NISAs shoulder when they were handling Demon Gaze and stopped them pulling any shit.

But Im still not interested in giving any money or time to anything NISA have had any involvement in. They dont deserve even that.

For a second there I thought this was a Sword Of The Stranger vidya.
I'm disappointed

3 characters that artstyle is 11/10.
2 girls that are clearly different artstyle, which is worse.
1 Disagea reference that I will skip.

Mobile game.

Ok what the hell is a deal with this game?
I looked at screenshots few months ago before they made it anime like and it was all golden.

Did they decide to change artstyle and stopped half way?
Can I turn it off and worry only about mobile overworld and buttons?

What are you smoking? The second pic is a world map. What exactly about it is "mobile"?

There are two art styles, the original darker fantasy version and an anime reskin they added for the domestic market. You don't have to use the alternate artstyle.

I was referring to the fact it looks like shitty mobile game.
Especially the castle in the middle.

If you are able to only have original art style it what really matters. Still I am surprised they didn't re-drew the map alongside it but I will most likely not look at it too often.

Kill yourself

You still haven't said what about it is reminscient of a mobile game, other than "looks like". You understand that is a world map, right? As in, a screen you use to travel to actual levels? It has no bearing on gameplay. It's the equivelant of image related.

The alternate art style (what most people seem to refer to as "anime", even though both art styles are influenced by anime, the more realistic original art style is in no way actually western) is for portraits only, enemies and area art aren't affected at all.

Shills are out in full force, I see.

Didn't say that, I just don't get what is mobile about a 2D world map, a staple of old-fashioned RPGs.

I mean if this were actually mobile trash I could understand, but it's essentially the polar opposite, a hardcore niche of a niche.

Ok I might have been mistaken it doesn't look like mobile.
It is just shit.

Like all graphics?
Yet this game main selling point seems to be graphics and having it in so varied quality make it bad.
Also 3D rendered dungeons are also shitty.

Thanks for info.

Opinions are opinions I guess, in my experience this is by far the best looking game in its sub-genre. Maybe you just don't like DRPGs and are comparing them to The Witcher 3 or something?

I understand the more simplistic animu style and lack of consistency can trigger someone's autism but nigger you went full retarded to call it 'mobile' just because you don't like it that map does look like shit but you're still a buzzword spewing retard

Kill yourselves, both of you

JPs clearly can't into PC but at least they are trying now.

Stop replying to the underage please

Experience has always been a PC focused dev nigger

Really?
The game looks pretty amateurish really.

Speaking as a beta tester (fuck y'all, free games AND A-CHEESE-MINTS), it's pretty good. NISA only had distribution rights, so they couldn't fuck anything up. Good ol' fashioned dungeon crawler. Grindy as fuck, but you'll get over it. The two artstyles comes from the fact that two artists did the art for the game. You can actually switch between the two different styles for NPC's (don't ever use Type B) and the mix can work like fine wine if you use the Type B art for younger characters.

I will say, however, it's one of the most unpleasant PC ports I've played. HOPE YOU ENJOY NO KEYBOARD AND MOUSE BUTTONS AND NEGATIVE MOUSE ACCELERATION. The controls on the map screen is cancer.

What do you mean by this? Controls seem fine and remappable to me.

How?
The only thing that could put you off was the mixed artstyles.
And that only happens if you choose two.

Theres like three different artstyles you can choose from.

I wonder if the recently announced enhanced version called "New Interpretation Stranger of Sword City" will come west. If it does, I hope Experience will bypass NISA this time and self-publish the game.

so what is this game, a turn based rpg?
or is there more to it?

The art direction, even if they went with multiple art styles to let player choose and the way the map is in

They seem like pretty amateurish mistakes, keeping things consistent is one of the things that take a while to figure out, fresh companies like Riot commit this kind of mistakes rather often.

Of course, art is merely eye candy in this genre and a proper experience is more important than things like profiles, I've played a few japanese Wizardry clones in the PSP and PS2 before and I'm happy enough they are keeping the genre alive even if they lack some polish.

No from what I have seen the 2D sprites in this game are fucking amazing.
This means the varied quality in graphics are really doing damage to it because what is good there is damaged by being presented with shit frame and why I am quite pissed about it looking this way.

Boy I said one word and triggered so many. I must start using mobile more often.
However I will just not say that and leave there, so I will say why each of posted are good and how this is bad:

First pic:
Everything is simplistic to just place info on it. It works. Nothing is out of place.

Second pic:
Stylized to be like cartoon and not that serious, nothing is out of proportion, it is fine.

Third pic:
Nice looking clearly outlines and make landmarks out of proportion to showcase them, good one.

Stranger map:
The wall near the lake makes it look like it just cuts because of trees hiding it.
The cliff with waterfall is just lazy line.
Temple above it just decided to fuck perspective and it doesn't try to showcase it as it is only object that is drawn with so little care to proportions.
City houses looks good, just like villige above it.
Castle on the other hand looks like I would make it using some cheap vector graphics in 15 min time.
Wasteland looks fine besides the fact plane and wagons being seriously oversized.

I mean no actual graphics for KB+M. Just numbers 1-10.

This was literally what everyone asked during the beta. It's a headache trying to memorize all your shortcuts already, but goddamn it, EXP. How hard was it to draw a letter?

Dungeon-crawler. Like Etrian Odyssey or Wizardry. You hunt down special monsters called Lineage Types and give some qt's their hearts for new powers and dungeons.

...

Ok I won't just laugh at you.
Instead tell me how exactly calling it shit by saying it is mobile is retarded.

Go ahead.

Go be retarded elsewhere, retard

So what's with the gameplay of this game?

Which is to say, is there anything special or unusual in their interpretation of the genre?

What kind of answer is that?
You are not making any sense you are just repeating things you read on Holla Forums.

Great question, any interesting spin on the old and tried formula like pic related did?

Worst attempt at projecting I've in a while

Yeah. A few things come to mind.

They have a system where every character has lifepoints based on age (typical Wizardry obsession with age of course). This ranges from 1-3. Every time a character "dies" they lose a lifepoint. If that takes them to 0, they are permanently gone. You can lost lifepoints by spending money (a LOT of money), or by hospitalizing them for free. Time passes slowly while you're out adventuring, and then at some point they will have recovered the lifepoint and you're free to take them back into the party. Characters who are not in the party gain automatic levels (though not as much) based on your party's progress, so you are incentivized to make backup members from the start who are waiting in the wings.

Just bog-standard bosses you seek out, but killing them rewards a currency you can spend to gain what they call Divinities, which are basically main-character-only special powers you can use in combat based off a resource called morale. You gain morale quickly in combat, and it persists between combat encounters, so it's a resource to manage. Divinities are stuff like reducing damage, 100% instant escape from combat, etc.

So this the other major wrinkle they introduced. Most of the time equipment does not drop at all from standard combat. Instead, you have areas in the dungeon where you can use an ability called "Hiding" to lie in wait and ambush monsters called transporters. They have chests that will drop a number of items. This is basically how you get most of your equipment. Hiding requires morale, so it all ties together into the resource system where you fight normal monsters to build morale to use Divinities and do ambush encounters.

Cause it's literally the world map. There's pre-judging, and then's there being retarded.

I will say the art is shit, especially Type B, but you might as well see some ACTUAL GAMEPLAY ART TO DEBATE (spoilered for size) instead of a world map. If the portraits fuck with you like your own hands so much, then draw your own. It's literally the selling point of the PC version. Who the hell cares about the art of a DUNGEON CRAWLER?

It really isn't, the thing that seems to bother people is that when you create characters they mix the different art styles together in the selection. Which is really just offering people more options.

It doesn't tell me anything what is exactly bad with saying that.
It is common knowledge mobile games are bad quality I used to instead of saying it is bad.

I have heard as an answer is people trying to compare it to other things that are clearly better like I explained but you ignored it and you repeating thing that was said here multiple times and makes no sense for me.

You didn't read rest of my post did you?
My issue is not with a game it is with the map and new art style being out of place and you can apparently skip new art style so no problem here.

Mobiles aren't called mobiles because they have bad quality
All mobile games have bad quality but not all games with bad quality are mobiles.

You're just fucking retarded.

it's up on irdem don't give them their $$$, kikebook release soon

the Neptunia shit is fucking hilarious, I'd say it's an improvement. Even though I would prefer to have the original version.

But mobiles are generally known for being low quality in terms of games.

Polite sage because thread is alive and kicking already.

i read somewhere you can add your own portraits, any limits on that?

Nah, but it will take effort. You have to create 4 different sizes of portraits. I might take the tons of /tg/ character art I have and edit and zip it up to work with the game, but no promises yet.

Pirate it and find out for yourself.

is this game lewd?

Fuck off

just askin, brah

We were all retarded 12 year olds once. Once you get a for more years under your belt, please don't look back on these days with scorn. Just accept it as a part of who you used to be.

I checked the store page.
that's a steep price for a port of a 3 year old game, even with the 20% discount

I've read the thread, and while you faggots keep saying that you can somehow avoide animoo asrtstyle, most of screenshots feature both gothic and colorful ones.
What's up with that, how exactly do you stay clear of moeblobs?

The character portraits you can choose from are what have the two different styles, and there's nothing stopping you from mixing and matching the styles with your characters, which is why some screenshots contain both.
If you want to avoid the moeblobs just don't choose any of those portraits.

So NPCs and such are not affected?
Nice.

if you want lewds in your dungeon crawler, play sakura dungeonsomething.

Torrent is up

kat.cr/stranger-of-sword-city-t12729232.html

If people want I might upload it to the share thread, not sure if there's any demand for that tho

is this dolphin porn or its legit?

It's a trusted uploader but not an official release, might be one of those unofficial 3dm cracks, will report when it finishes

Small update: it works. If anyone wants me to upload it in the share thread let me know I suppose.

please do

There are some semen demons in the roster, and some of the monsters are pretty lewd (harpies and spidergirls come to mind), but this isn't Omega Labyrinth.

or Moe Chronicles or Dungeon travelers.

Which is better? in terms of gameplay/difficulty/fun
Dungeon travelers 2 or Stranger of Sword City?

I can't say because I haven't touched DT2, but I don't think it would be outlandish to say SoSC is at least the second best DRPG on the system.
You'd be better off asking in the vita thread where many anons own and love DT2.

DS2 is censored, avoid.

DT2*

but user! they were protecting my western sensibilities! when i finish moe chronicle and stranger of sword city i will buy it like a good goy

Got it from IGG, and shit, this game is pretty good. I can tell I'm going to play it for a long time. NIS logo puts me off paying for it, even though I want to.

Thank god the PC version got localized, I wanted to play it but fuck giving NISA money.

Thank you piracy

This pic needs to be updated for CURRENT YEAR

NISA didn't translate it. The developers did. NISA is only the publisher. I don't care either way, but you should know you are just shafting the developer here for no particular reason (i.e, it isn't butchered).

So what do I do with the pre built characters? Use them or just make new ones?

>>>/tumblr/

It can be. Throw in your lewd character art if you're on PC

You want to see maximum Juden?
nichegamer.com/2016/05/06/debut-trailer-for-new-interpretation-stranger-of-sword-city/

WEW
I launched the game and saw that the button prompts are just fucking numbers, then promptly uninstalled.
What a lazy port

I don't care if it's not butchers or hell, if NISA somehow made it better. The fact alone that NISA gets money from it is reason enough for me to not support it.

I will not give NISA money under any circumstance because I refuse to help fund them butcher other games. Giving the money helps them continue to censor games, break games and lie to their customers.

If they devs deserved my money, they wouldn't have hired NISA.

oh vey! why do you punish the poor devs?! bad goy!
at least send them a check or something, faggot.

>Combat is static stretching and swaying still images, text and hitsparks
Holy fuck, even genesis games had more elaborate combat graphics.
I mean Phantasy Star 3 was like that, and then in 4 they actually have characters visibly doing shit.

Simplicity is king.
There are roguelikes with more elaborate combat graphics, doesn't make Nethack any less entertaining.

That mentality led 2D graphics in video game to its current state.

I'd honestly kill for PS4-style battle screens and perspective in muh wizardry clones, they're so badass. Would make custom portraits/characters a bitch, but worth it.

Is it possible to customize the portraits in the Vita version? I might just wait to get that if that's the case, since the PC isn't that great.

i think that custom shit is only for PC.

...

Why the fuck is the graphics in pic 2 all atari 1600 level graphics, but there's a highly detailed and markedly non pixelated moon and glow on the right?

If you're trying to imply that the people who dungeon crawlers are the same who play pixel indie shit you couldn't be any more wrong.

Am i the only person who was playing this game when it came out in original japanese language?

Don't play this game, its too good for you. Only team muramasa fans and people who value wizardry-like games above all genres can play this.

Its not for you.

You aren't welcome to play this game.

Its not a port.
The game was originally released on the pc, and then ported on vita.

You're correct, but you realize that just makes this shit even more unforgivable, right?

Scary truth about japanese pc video games.

Most of them layout their key prompts as numbers for gamepad users. Honestly localization is at fault here, they could change them for unacknowledged western user.

...

what a steaming pile of dogshit; the fact that this is a PC game that was later ported to consoles makes it even more unforgivable

these devs need to kill themselves, NISA not have had anything to do with the game outside of publishing but it sure fucking feels like it

...

I'm not usually one to call someone retarded, but blaming a game for how Windows is setup is pretty ridiculous

Waste of time that could be spent grindan, stats have caps anyway, you're a fag and I'm going to marry riu

That's just straight up bad programming.

If that's the case, maybe the incompetent fucks should have made it run as an admin by default.
Of all my games currently installed, only two of them require admin privs to run. Both of them are shit games that I've only not uninstalled out of laziness, and at least they have the decency to just crash on launch instead of letting you 30 minutes in just to say fuck no saving allowed.

SoSC's uninstaller was right next to the exe.

Excuse me for not reading a guide for every new game like a little bitch.

The world map definitely looks like it's pasted together with hightier clip art, like you'd see in a mobile game.

the game absolutely should not be writing saves in the program files, that shit belongs in either the users files (like where "My Documents" is) or hidden appdata and nowhere else.

You're right that the game shouldn't be saving there, but that guy is still a dumbass for installing a game to program files and then not running as admin.
Anyway the PC version is shit, it's better to get the vita version or just not bother.

user, im not the sharpest knife in the kitchen, but even I know that, your post was retarded.

I installed the game to my K: drive in a folder I use just for games you retard. I'm actually slightly offended you think I'd even consider installing a game to OS drive.

i hate when programs do this. its following windows overall design decisions with hidden registry and needless clutter and all. you assign a specific folder to programs to keep things organized in the first place, why would you sabotage that by shitting up folders that dont belong to it?

You can change resolution by the way.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do

if they ported the game to a real operating system I would not expect such a thing and would hate it too, but if microshit wants it done one way on their operating system then that's the way you should do it.

So what was the decision regarding Criminal Girls on PC, not releasing it at all? Wasn't supposed to came out in April?

Fucking flag

So does this game have any sort of monk class or unarmed build? From what I see it doesn't.

They just said this year, that smaller Oni girl game was the one released in March.

hope it fucking fails

Who gives a shit? It's the censored out the ass NISA version of a game that isn't even good to begin with.

Yeah there is a Cleric class and there are fist weapons that can be equipped, although certain classes will only have the skills that will make use of the fist weapons.

Most of how your characters perform is down to stat allocation and equipment, with the only big exception to that being the skills and abilities that a class gets as they level up, which will enable special moves only if you have certain classes of weapons equipped.

So while it is generally advisable to have your ranger using a bow, you can give them a sword and have them clean up as well. With a cleric, you can give them a staff for a slight boost in healing skills, but they don't need a staff to heal or cure, so you can give them throwing knives or a pole arm that will have a long range so they can attack from the back row. Unless you put a few extra points into Strength, they won't do much damage, but it is a trade off because you would be putting those points into Strength instead of Vitality, Agility, or Piety (which determines how effective your healing is).

You have a fair amount of flexibility with how you craft your characters, but unless you are careful, you can easily make a character that isn't really effective at doing much at all.

What does that have to do with anything. I just want Kenshiro in my party. When people say Monk class they are talking about the fisticuffs class not clerics or whatever. Thanks for the info though.

See

It isn't even a world map, it's just a background of a menu that you pick what level to go into. Whenever you're on that screen, you only are there to use the menu on the left and you're only on it for like 3 seconds.

Monk classes in many games do punching and healing, and the only class in this game that heals is the Cleric class. So if you wanted to be a front line puncher that was a Cleric, you would have to put your points into Vitality and strength, which would leave you unable to heal much in the way of raw damage, although the Cleric's spells to cure status conditions and to buff your party's Hit and Avoid stats would still work just as well.

If you just want to punch guys while looking tough, that's easy and there are plenty of good player portraits for that. Just be a Fighter class.

Ah well I don't feel like arguing what a Monk should be. So claws should be my go to weapon, right? And for that matter, what about purely barehanded builds with no weapons whatsoever?

You can't stop me. I'll play it and have fun.

1. Because fucking video games should not have the permissions to randomly overwrite files in the Program Files directory.
2. Because Windows doesn't have fine-grained permission controls (or at least ones that 99.99% of programmers know anything about), so making the user choose between "this application is somewhat sandboxed" and "this application can pretty much own you if it wanted to" is fucking retarded.
3. Because NT was designed for multi-user systems from the start, and storing save or configuration data in the program folder breaks this.

It's no different than dotfiles in UNIX, the only reason why people (myself included) hate it is because the directory scheme is so convoluted and every program has a different idea of which AppData or custom My Documents folder it wants to put its shit in.

user are you alright?

Thought you could get away huh?

It's a common bug with this site.
Insert a 2 hour long break in-between steps 1 and 2 and you have what just happened to me.

...

You're not a very big guy

...

Make that three autists

i will solo this game as trump

git gud

one of the big design issues with a customization game is actually having characters like that do shit.

So if you're 2d, it's preset characters and a character based story for you, but if you want to do character animations that account for customized characters you need to go 3d if you don't want to go full autismo or full programmer wizardry.

You can add models onto 3d characters, but with sprites you need to basically remake it for each frame of every animation, which needs to be determined and have a base templete for every one, and you have to either do segmented animation to account for all possible combinations, or you do animations that account for outfits only, with headswaps, which also have to be made.

In short, having characters do shit in a customizable enviroment is a fucking bitch in 2d.

And I know all this shit because I had to toss out character customization on that sort of level because it's simply too time intensive, for a game i'm making.

There's a reason Jap Rpgs are character based with no real focus on character creation, while western Rpgs like Wizardry are story based and the story's made to accommodate the generic player character.

It does not account for lazyness, however.

No need. That plane was already on fire.

they maybe should have the permission to rw from their own directory, wherever you chose that to be. that whole user/application permission fiasco is more windows fault than anything though. i dont think its cleverly designed at all and it has been proven many times that it can be done better.

there are several other ways of making different versions of applications or just their configurationfiles available to different users - most of which seem more clever. the windows way of doing this neither seems very organized nor efficient.
ill kinda give you that the application should follow the general rules of the system it runs on though. which in windows case i personally find shit, but should be followed nonetheless.

which dont necessarily have to be in the users folder

that too, yes

fugg

I fucking hate new Holla Forums sometimes.

Have you played a DRPG before? It's a decent one of those with a very punishing death penalty, also enemies have instant death attacks. Also rolling for stats. It may be worth finding a cheat that locks the reroll stat to its highest potential stat for the amount of life points you're shooting for, which should probably be 2. I feel like I made a mistake on Vita going for a mostly 1 LP team for the sweet stat bonuses.

I know, I'm the guy who posted the only thing in this thread that had to do with gameplay way back in the first few replies, it just bothers me we have so many replies that say nothing. If people have nothing to say, why not just let the thread fucking die?

I highly doubt a game like this can be soloed, even with Donald. Make the rest of the party his endorsers or family members if you can.

No it was developed for the

first. MS must have given this studio some money because it makes absolutely no sense to release a Japanese game on the xbox.

Folks here don't know how business works.

NISA makes money with publishing games.

If you hate NISA buy it used or pirate.

Otherwise you're supporting NISA.

Yeah, I recognized that as soon as I posted it, just didn't want to doublepost to correct myself. It was released on PC like a month later, so I'm sure they had internal PC versions that were ready, but it's whatever.

just wait a few weeks to people beat the game or talk in the vita thread. this game has a big red flag that is NISA, so the thread will be bitching about that.

Isn't first playthrough when people usually talk about gameplay, though? Once you've beat it, talk turns to general retrospective commentary. And judging from the XCOM 2 threads, the bitching about random publisher drama will persist _forever_.

I guess I will check out the vita thread though.

Not many people talking about it for three reasons
1) NISA, so fuck buying it; even moreso because many people will assume it's censored/memed out the ass at a glance and ignore it
2) the PC port is fucking dogshit
3) Wizardry clone is a niche genre

Funny thing is that when you pirate a game you can allocate the install and save path yourself.

Steam is just such utter SHITE.

Piracy is still superior in so many ways…

It's the best version of the game, so what the fuck do you actually mean? The only thing Vita has over it is leaderboards, which would just be filled with cheatengine players anyway.

Fair enough and I agree.

BR?

I remember some game whose save file I just couldn't find. Turns out it was in a HIDDEN FOLDER. I don't really hate windows but windows and Japanese videogames can be a lethal combination.

Took me an hour to find it until after googling I ended up in some obscure forum.

Made me feel nostalgic for windows 98.

How deep are the mechanics? I love Wizardry clones, but I need some deep character customization and equipment whoring to chew into.

Fairly deep. Guess it depends on what you mean by "deep". Do you mean hours of grind, complexity in moment to moment gameplay, etc? There are tons of options and the multiclassing is some of the best I've seen in this sub-genre. I am not a fan of phase-based combat, though, which all Wizardry clones are, so I have my minor gripes such as that. Overall I'd rate it a solid 85-90 for fans of these sorts of games. It does most things very right, and the convenience features are really, really nice while never getting into "playing the game for me" territory.

That's what got me interested in it in the first place.

Ninjas are the punch class in this game, but you want to start as a knight first to unlock the Equip Heavy Armor skill so you won't fucking crumple after a monster taps you like a Magic: The Gathering card.

MAKE ESCARIO GREAT AGAIN!

Sounds like it's just my kind of thing, so I'm giving it a go now.

I didn't see if anybody posted all of the portraits, so here they are.
Looks like a bizarre mix of proper fantasy artwork and animu trash.

There are two artstyles for NPCs you can switch between in the options. The character creation lets you pick between them, hence the clashing options there.

And the rest of character customization for the starting character.
Certain things are restricted either for MC story purposes, or to be unlocked later on down the road, it looks like.

I don't even know what to say, user.

Ah, gotcha.
I see the separation between western style and nip style, but I also clearly see at least three different animu styles within the latter category.
Also one hybrid "western fantasy as drawn by a nip" style within the western category - sort of reminiscent of a less exaggerated Dragon's Crown style.

I dig most of the artwork, even most of the animu doesn't seem that terrible. I'm hoping most of the game is drawn in the western style, though.
It's not a dealbreaker, but I just really love that style.

When I get cut I'll bleed gold and bitches. It can't go wrong.

The westernized style was the original art style and the default for NPCs if you don't change anything. Really, the whole "wow the animu portraits are trash" thing is so overexaggerated, if you don't change options the only time you will see them is in character creation.

I am kind of curious if they made animu variants for some of the CG slides they have in the story, there's a point where the ladygirl of justice shows you her tits for some reason, I am not sure if they even bothered to create new artstyle variants for that stuff, since they are basically cutscenes.

The font of the title makes me think of pic related.

I understood that reference.

I see what you mean. It's kind of neat, actually, considering the mishmash of modern with fantasy going on.
It's reminiscent of SMT in a way - at least SMTIV and Strange Journey which I've actually played.

So are you guys using your customs or not?
I've got Orneisten from DS, Kirk from DS, Girl in plesioth armor from MH and Metatron from SMT.
Anyone have any ideas, or want any of those that I made?

To get the customs to look good you have to do the transparencies right. It's a lot of effort to do polygon lasso on most images to take out the background, so I haven't bothered yet. Maybe I will for my second playthrough, but the art that ships with the game is already higher quality than most professional /tg/-style western fantasy art I have stockpiled.

Ah fuck man.
Did I miss anything?

oh nisa, you sure know how to PR

If I had a drink I would have spat it everywhere

Pretty much all JP games have that though.

end my existence.

Ah fuck,
I'm done for the night

Does it have to be an extremely specific resolution or file type? Does it need all those transparency layers flattened into a single layer first?

They're all saved to .bmp(which is the default file type, but the game also accepts png and jpg).
They also all have the right resolution.
And I flattened them all into a single layer.
I've just no idea why it isn't working.

Fuck I changed the resolution to fullscreen and now it looks like this. I can't find the settings file, anyone know where it is?
reinstalling didn't help

Try pressing Q and E in the options menu.

Ah, I fixed it.
Turns out the folder was named img01 instead of just 01, this is what triggered the errors.

no good. fuck. Where the hell is the folder in appdata? can't find it

So for anyone wanting to get custom portraits on a pirated version, here's how you do it:

Have you tried CTRL-ENTER or ALT-ENTER to force switch out of full screen?

Yup, it's a wiz-clone alright, and I'm already having fun.
Gotten monsters to cough up two uniques already, as well as some decent armor and hats. Now I just need to figure out if they can drop accessories and pantsu.

does nothing

there must be a configuration folder in appdata somewhere because reinstalling did nothing, but I can't find it

well, at least they are courteous.

ok in the meantime i managed to fix it by randomly selecting things with the arrow keys and hitting enter.

Fun fact, the pantsu are actually pretty damn useful.
I had the starter elf mage wearing them for the longest time.

YES

Demon Gaze is one of my favorite games. Haven't started Operation Abyss though, Sci-fi demon gaze.

YES

Demon Gaze is one of my favorite games, havent started Operation Abyss yet which is scifi Demon Gaze

I didn't even know that Experience Inc was a thing or that they made this. Good to know.
For me, they're just Wizardry Clones, and they include franchises like Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei.

Honestly, regardless of who makes them, I'm just happy they get made at all. It's one of the few remaining genres that's managed to remain somewhat pure in its mechanics and unforgiving difficulty.
I don't know why it's only Japan that's keeping this western genre alive, but god bless those beautiful japs.

I think that's a serious issue casualfags have with these games. In jap Wizardry clones the grind is not something to be slogged through to get to the good part of the game, the grind IS the good part of the game.

Every ambush spot has a few types available, you'll have to range around to different hiding spots and even different labyrinths to get all item slots for a given tier.

Most small devs in Japan didn't go full indie cancer, maybe it got something to do with citizens not being allowed to receive donations, maybe they just respect customers more. Maybe they know their audience and stick with it. Who know.
I gotta buy some official merchandise so they get something without nisa taking a cut.

Its Japanese tradition that receiving donations is frowned upon its why most big names went Indie and develop in America so they don't receive backlash from the Japanese

like inafune?

best version doesn't mean the port is even at an acceptable level
just being on PC usually makes a game the "best version", with the rare exceptions a la vanilla DMC3 (thanks Ubishit) or vanilla Resident Evil 4 (thanks again Ubishit, noticing a pattern?)

Fucking masterpiece. Now give me X-Blood, Team muramasa!

Yes. This is what I like.
Also, the environments all have very different looks to each other, which is good. Too many of these games just stick to dark stone halls or lush green forests and never mix it up. Really digging the shiny clean look of the Shadow Palace.

This is also the part of the game where you can start running into guys waaay over your level. So just be warned that you can have some serious one shot moments if you aren't careful about eyeing your enemies before committing.

Just had a moment like that, actually. Fought some green slimes no problem, and then some purple slimes showed up with some more green slimes in the next fight.
They took little damage, but their health bars went down quickly enough so I figured they were kind of like the slimes in DQ - extreme defense but low hp. Well, after three rounds they all did some kind of party-wide splash attack in a row and brought everyone down to sub-10 HP and poisoned half of them.
I flash escaped so fucking hard, and now I'm tiptoeing around this place a bit more gingerly.

The spellcasting slimes are some of the most dangerous early enemies you'll run into, yeah. Shadow Palace is probably best left for later. As I recall, the first map of VoT (slums) is the easiest and most efficient grind spot you'll find at that point. No really tough enemies, and plenty of ambush spots. Forest has a difficulty spike when you get to the orc village, and the spinners are annoying as heck for continuous farming, but the first area (south of the orc village) is pretty easy if you can stand the spinners.

Here's an orneisten if anyone wants him.
Note, I'm unsure if the transparencies are right since I use .bmp, I just converted to .png to post it here.

That's actually really badass. I wonder if it would be possible to make a whole Souls themed party.

It is possible, there's tons of readily available art.
I also made a Kirk if you want it.

Here's how it looks in-game, the cropping could be better but eh, I couldn't be bothered

I like it. I don't have the game but was thinking of getting it. Might wait to see if it goes even further on sale during the steam sale.
Doubt it since it's a new release.

Just pirate it lad.

I'm tempted to. I just have issues with pirating. Maybe I'll just pirate it and buy it when it gets cheaper.

That's what I'm planning to do.

...

Is the torrent here legit?

most likely.

Yes.

Way to be a little bitch.

Being a little bitch was in fact the right call.

anyone else getting this problem?

Either don't put it in Program Files (I have mine in C:\SOSC) or run as administrator.

The death mechanics suck the hugest balls in this game.
Nevermind the risk of permadeath if you don't play safe, that is cool, what isn't cool is having to play 5 hours without your character in order to play with it again unless you spend a gorillion shekels to instantly revive and rest your character.
I could use a party full of randoms in order to spend time whitout leveling the other members in the main party, but it would still take so much time. The main character also is forced to pay up to instantly revive, making saving money impossible. If main char dies, you have to spend all your gold or else the jews in the hospital will spend it for you.
In a game where monsters can 1HKO your tank if you're unlucky, this kind os system is unnaceptable. It just takes loads of time, doesn't make it any more difficult.
The way age defines your maximum bonus stats is also very obtuse. And having that infinite reroll bullshit when creating your character is another big waste of time and unbalanced. "you can get a character that has full potential, but you have to play slots first! Don't want to waste time? Guess you don't need 4 more stat points (equivalent of what a life point costs or specific talent gives you)"

Is the only place to save in the Stranger Guild?

Ah, thanks.

Yes, that and life points are a core game mechanic.

I'm seeing lot's of people using custom characters that aren't using the correct transparency effect's that the game uses. I blame it on the game for not giving you tools to easily make the pictures with a single image file. I have Photoshop files with transparency masks set up, so you only have to resize the image and place the mask in it's layer to get results like pic related, so no more rough edges under your characters while exploring and no more characters bleeding out of the cards. If anyone wants it I can upload them in a rar file.

I think by "suck the hugest balls" you really mean "is not a style I personally enjoy". I like the permadeath mechanic, it lends meaning to the dungeon crawling that would otherwise be absent. Play another game like this with saving anywhere like Elminage Gothic… and yeah, the average difficulty is a bit higher, but being able to save and reload anywhere just makes the game a trivial case of trial and error.

It's clear they designed the game around this system, hence why the first divinity you get is 100% escape for a very cheap morale cost, the auto-leveling of other party members. And if you want to brute force it it really isn't that bad. There are also dolls in the shop that will automatically prevent deaths. They are limited in number and never restock so they won't make up for someone playing like garbage, but they are more than enough to deal with the occasional gib if you are honestly playing smartly.

Definitely do that. Out of curiosity, what clipping tool are you using to cut backgrounds out, too? I haven't messed with it enough to figure out what works best, the effort involved has scared me away so far.

Please do it lad, I couldn't wrap my head around how to use this shit so everything I made ended up with white borders.

Is there any reason not to have max age on your protag for max stats?

Zero reason, 60+ is free bonus points. I will touch on bonus points since people are complaining about them, though.

You don't have to reroll. At all. It's purely optional. Stats cap out at the race's starting point + 20, so all extra bonus points from tons of rerolls gives you is a slightly easier beginning. Do I need to point out how easy the beginning is anyway? You get +99 stat points from leveling, that is more than enough for characters to max out what they want to max out.

There is for sure no reason not to try and get some good rolls on your first character, but non-protag characters are anyway pretty limited in their bonus points due to having to be younger for more than 1 lifepoint. It's really not a big deal once you start playing the game past the beginning.

I agree with you 100%.
The only problem I have with it is how they deal with the revive and recovery mechanics, revive should be instantaneous always and free in the safe haven of the game, free recovery just takes too long and instant recovery is way too expensive, expecially in early game this is a huge problem.

The images that have single colored backgrounds can be easily made transparent by selecting the background around the character with the magic wand and deleting it. for more complex backgrounds the only way I know is by getting a round eraser that is not pixel sharp and manually erase the background around the character, then removing the rest with something like a bigger eraser and a lasso tool

Will do, I will make a little tutorial on how to properly edit it also, since I'm a photoshop noob myself, it should be easy for everyone to understand.

Minmaxing faggots, I tell you…
that stat info is very handy

You can have headcanon that he is immortal? Actually, it's not headcanon. The protagonist is literally immortal–or at least his soul is.

Figured as much, I will probably just use the polygonal lasso then. I had a pretty good idea of how to do it, just didn't want to do pixel-by-pixel work when the portraits that launch with the game are quite good. Looking forward to the transparency files, though, thanks for doing that.

I actually agree on this, it would be more interesting if recovery were expensive but within your means. As it is you will never pay for instant recovery because it is almost always more to pay for instant recovery for one person than you have total money OVERALL, which is… needless to say, utterly insane.

I sure do enjoy sitting and waiting while fifty T'Rang each take their turn slooooooooowly sliding around the crowd of other T'Rang to try to get close to the party for their attack.

Well, that's not a problem in early Wizardry-style games like this. You can resolve all combat rounds instantaneously with no animations if you like.

Fully 3D gridders were always… awkward. I wonder if Bard's Tale 4 will be able to release as an actually playable game, or yet another misery of modern evolution.

dl3.volafile.net/get/Pf-vPUOTw67lOw/SoSC Transparency Photoshop.rar

Here it is, waiting for feedback about it working or not.

So when a character vanishes, they're gone forever and you need to roll up a replacement character, right?
…I feel like I shouldn't have made my wizard 99 years old.

Fuck it, I'll multiclass him into Knight and put him in the heaviest armor I can find. He'll be like a metal boulder with a wizard hat.

You fucked up if you made anyone but the protagonist have 1 LP. I guess you can rely on merlin dolls and always reloading your saves.

If you're not far into the game, you can make another one right now, and level him alone a little bit.
Otherwise you'll have to reload everytime he dies. Also, I'm still in the start of the game but the ingame help texts said some monsters can reduce your LP without even killing you, if I'm not mistaken…

Also, I remember why I was checking those texts, can someone tell me how does off hand weapons work? The penalty is the reason their damage is lower on the stat screen, or does the penalty apply to both weapons and the off hand one's damage is even lower? Is there any reason other than using a shield not to use anything on your off hand?

Penalty applies to offhand damage and is reduced (and even eliminated entirely) by higher agility.

Some weapons are 2H only, but other than that and shields, dual-wielding is SWEDEN YES!.

Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

seems more like overconfidence bursts you down before you can blink, in this game

Can you visit their graves or something to remember them?

Yeah this doesn't work for me, anyone else able to do it?

Bump for help, I've tried fugging everything.

have you tried buying the game?

If it weren't 30 bux I'd consider it. This is something I'd pay $15 at most for.

Why is there a crashed airliner on the plain next to that fantasy city? Is this where that missing Malaysian plane ended up?

People vanish from their own worlds and end up on this one. That's why your party has both burly dwarves and moeblob idols.

What exactly is going wrong?

Bane?

yes, does lucky fucking bastards.

...

She's a nice girl.

I need to know exactly what problem are you having.
Does it crash upon start up?
Does your character just not show up?
Are you using PNG, BMP or JPG?
Speak up nigger

Here's a kirk for anyone wanting it.
I've finally managed to fix my white border problem, so I'll be posting my characters as I fix them one by one here.

Plesioth armor concept art from monhun.

posted the wrong userImgD

Metatron.

Ah fug, this time I posted the wrong userImgB

Succubus from Disgaea.

Amazing job user, your work is majestic.

y-you too.
This one here is a goblin from Monster Hunter concept art.

And my last one, yet another design from the Monster Hunter artbook.10
Now, if anyone has any requests and they aren't too complicated I might do one or two.

Undo the renaming you did and don't touch the USERDATA folder. Instead, make a new PICTUREGATE folder and put your custom portraits there.

Yeah, i wonder if you can make this Vivian art work. Please.

I'll pm you the fix ;3

Just give me like, 30 minutes so I can be done with this dungeon and I'll try.

Thanks.

Second panel of the options (changeable by clicking top right corner of the screen)

Upload button.

Did you pressed it?

user, everything works except for your guy.

Here fam.
It should look alright in-game.

Great, thanks.

Yeah, Orneisten is fucked to shit, manly due to how Dark Souls concept art has characters fading into the background, I tried to do a Havel and got similar results.
I'll try to fix orneisten, just hang on a bit.

Okay, you totally fucked up aspect ratio for no reason.

just move userImgA like 10 pixels down on any image editor.

Okay.

Found a nice tutorial:
deepforest3.qlookblog.net/index.1.html

Seems like Cuckchan made a lot of portraits.

Another batch from cuckchan.

Alright, I'm having mild success using another Orneistein pic.
Can you tell me if this one looks alright in-game?
If it does I'll make the other 3.

Only the first ones though?
I'd love the other 3 pics of that Amazon one.

I have a ton of good /tg/-tier art if you want stuff to edit. Still haven't got around to it myself.

Pretty good.

Assembled my team from contributions in this thread.

WELL FUCK.

Everyone is overlapping each other.

At least i can rearrange those fuckers.

I have no idea what I'm doing

What image editor are you using?
Try adding a slight blurring filter to the edges so that it doesn't look jarring in-game, if you use Gimp I can teach you how to do it in like,4 clicks.

Moved him down a bit so that he would appear fully.

/r/equesting a broquest set

Finally broquest will be real.
Anyone got the nameless rank and file knight image?I'd dig adding one to my game myself

Looks pretty okay.

I wonder if starting level 1 with 24 str is the maximum you can even start with this stat.

Alright, I'm a retard. I thought it wasn't working but it was, just that the thumbnail in the portrait selection didn't show it.

Incidentally, Granblue Fantasy has a lot of characters that fit the style of the game. Wiki has pictures that already have transparency too.

granblue-wiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

Teach me how to blur pls.

Are you on gimp?

kek

29 should be max since stats cap at 9+20 for humans and you can get +20 bonus points if you are really lucky. I gave up after like 30 minutes and settled with +19 bonus points.

Yes.

YES. YOU FUCKING RIGHT 29 IS POSSIBLE.

I was wondering about that. What do you use to blur in photoshop? Doing my first edit right now to learn… and holy shit, some of the character art out there has fucking annoying ass backgrounds. Watermarks are the worst.

I will get around to it, though most of my "male" pics are more monsters than people.

30 is the highest bonus roll.

Alright, here's what you'll do, this assumes you've got an image with a transparent background already.
Default settings will probably look good enough, but if you think that they don't just mess a bit with them, can't hurt.

...

I've no idea, I don't use photoshop.
But yeah backgrounds are the worse, here's how the Orneistein image looked before, and it was a fucking nightmare to remove that background.

She's a big girl.

Here fam.
Just remove "alt" from the filename.

Why using user's pngs in wizardry game is more fun than modding skyrim?

I'm doing one where they had a fucking game name over an item the person is holding, it's pretty fun.

I know there's a blur tool in Photoshop for individual areas, just not sure if the "filter entire image by color" thing is an option.

Thanks, looking pretty good.

Is it possible to edit files while the game is running?

I'm afraid not, this is why on my other post I asked an user to test my file instead of doing it myself.

Honestly vivian sprite is kinda messy.

I think i'l replace her later with someone else.

Yeah sorry for that, it's just that the artstyle made it a bit annoying to make her pictures work, so yeah she'll probably look like shit on purely white or black backgrounds.

I guess you can't do it with a simple photoshop, right? I guess i'l learn myself later.

Things i saved from cuckchan. Needs renaming though.

The second pic you posted might work great for the game.
The first one is kinda too simplistic and would clash with the game's artstyle, and the third one looks great but it'd take a good 30 mins to remove the background.

...

Could I get a hand here? Gimp isn't letting me save in the appropriate resolution.

...

Image > Resize > Click the little chain next to the resolution so that it breaks in half > input the resolution you want.

...

I should actually play labyrinth of touhou after this. It looks fun.

This helped a bit, I think. Thanks.

Would be easier if I could find already transparent images ripped from the game files, but sticking with default portraits myself anyway.

Alright I think I got it, so far it looks good in-game.

...

Well I guess not.

Eh, just play up until you get to the point where you can create a team then change his position.

It looks okay like this.

You could try just moving him a bit to the right in your .png too.

Okay, i think it works. Please test.

Can someone please remove or hide the white edges on this image? I can't make pictures transparent for shit.

Just do the blur thingy on gimp and the edges should go away/stop being so prominent.

Speaking of which, what the fuck causes this ingame?

In photoshop the original image was 100% transparent where the white edges show up ingame, the image looks fine in the folder, but once you load it into the game this happens. I saw this happening to to other people, what exactly causes it?

It has to do with some background bullshit, I've only read about it a bit but it's because you didn't use a specific tool to prepare the image for a specific background color.
But the thing is, this game doesn't has a single color for all backgrounds, most backgrounds aren't even a solid color, so the only solution is the blur the edges a bit.

Refine edges in photoshop works too.

chastity mouth cover thingy?

wouldnt it be better to select the image with the "free selection tool" and inverse selection and delete?
Im using gimp2

Before I saved it, it had a completely transparent background. I guess photoshop turns it into a solid white? In any case all the example pictures they have in userdata have a white background when viewed, so I don't get why they don't do this.

She's a singer. The mask is a cursed item put on her by her rival which makes her unable to say anything other than muffled nonsense.

It looks alright on mainly everything else it's just that he's leaning and it looks weird when he's on the first slot.

Its much more simpler.

Game converts it into BMP, and then this is what happens to your pictures.

...

Also, one thing that the game never explains to you.
When selecting your party order, first 3 characters = front row and last 3 characters = back row.

I don't think so, this happened when I used .bmps too.

back row gets/deals less melee damage?

f2p games sometimes have great art.

Yeah, and I take back what I said about the example pics. Even their pics suffer from the white line around everything. There must be a way to do this properly since the default portraits don't have this problem, but fuck if I know.

Blur didn't help me at all, incidentally. No change whatsoever.

yeah pretty much, spears bypass the "deal less melee damage" thing tho.

Fixing this guy's shoulders so they won't touch anybody was fucking hellish.

Fucking shoulders bigger than in warhammer games.

You eventually can get weapon trick on anyone to bypass that. There's also daggers with L range, most skills only require one weapon to be a given range, so you can just put L range in offhand and beefy weapon in main.

Looking at the original (vanilla) portraits, it looks like they all have a thin black border around them. Maybe that's what you're supposed to do. No idea how you'd be able to do that automatically in an image editing program, though.

Yeah, that's the blur I was talking about.
Unless your cropjob is really bad, the blur should solve the white outlines.

and produces great lewds, if the IP owners arent fucking jews about it.

Yes, you may not like Granblue but the art is good and the porn is fantastic.

Personally I think it's a pretty good game, but this is neither the time nor the place for this.

Guys, i have a great idea.

How about making Overlord pack with at least 6 characters in it from Overlord anime?

Sure, go ahead.
:^)

Will adding shadows in photoshop help fight against white cum on images? Or outside lightning?

You better upload that hulkster right now brother

...

Adding outside light or centered shadow with photoshop works!

It works!

Okay, here's first contribution to overlord pack, Clementine.

Uh, it's basically the same affect as the blur.
Guess it just has a different name in photoshop.

Albedo.

Selvaria Bles.

I decided to use another picture since blur didn't do much on the other one.

Ainz.

>no armpits
almost perfect, user

I couldn't use the blur on this one for some reason so the quality is kinda meh.

Still it should satisfy your desire for crusades.

Shalltear.

And another one I just made, this one works well

Ayo hol' up

This look really cool and shit.

But why would anyone buy this if they're already making a Special Edition?

Really?

4u

What is New Interpretation then?

Aren't it will be made only for japanese?

I only hope they will release x-blood sometimes in the future… Because that's a great game too.

I would give team muramasa all my money if only they made more localizations for pc.

Fuck, i am all for custom portraits guys, but it seems that we all make too large or too small ones…

I mean, with default portraits its just easier to play. They don't stand out so damn much.

...

lame tbh

The way that looks makes me think of money.
A full roster of people from various currency papers would be interesting.

Well, I don't know fam, all weeb games are initially Japan only, then if we are lucky we get them too.

is there any way to use .gif images for the replacements?
What about those magic moving .png files?

yep, they rerelease the game with more content and shit.
Nobody knows if they will update the steam version or sell it with DLC

just edit them to make the right, user.

The game doesn't support .gifs.
And odds are animated pngs won't work.

Slight adjustment to image A.
I made her slightly less "thick" because In-game made her look too wide and I also removed a white dot that hidden was in the top of image.

Just remove the ver2 and replace the first one.

Or maybe they will just abandon it. Fuck me.

or the will just sell the whole game again, with a minor discount for all the good goys that bought the game

I have a prize for everyone bumping this thread and still making portraits.

BIG CUCKCHAN ARCHIVE, 100 mb big!

Gigantic portrait archive, that includes portraits from Vanillaware games, monster girls, Eiyuu Senki and most important - Rance games:

Everything, of course, was collected from Cuckchan.

Enjoy.

user…
thanks for the .rarfaggot

go ahead do it, faggot.

WTF niggers? Some of you are even complaining about overlapping and messed up edges

Seems like most of us here use gimp, and you didn't even post how to use them.

The tutorial is inside the files
I don't use gimp though…

Any brave user that will bite the bullet and make a new thread?

Whoever does, please add the link for the photoshop transparency masks in OP.
dl3.volafile.net/get/Pf-vPUOTw67lOw/SoSC Transparency Photoshop.rar

I'll do it in about 10-15min.

New thread.
