Naming characters in vidya

I can't be the only guy who sits there on the name entry screen with no idea what to put. How do you guys come up with names?

Same name I use for every game if I can.

Or go the route my brother goes: most sexual references possible:

[my name] or Guts if guy.
Siobahn if girl

I just sound out words/names after picking out a personality or theme, then combine them

Use this when you're creating a brand new character and don't have any name in mind.

Meatbag

I remember back when I worked at stupid gamestop, my boss and I were making characters in Soul Calibur 3 in the store. He always had some good names. "Trampho" and "Sluttania" are the only ones that come to mind. He did make rock band bands named "crib death" and "rape hooks"

I know I just that username somewhere recently..

With female characters I usually go with my waifus name, if it's male I go with a baneposting name or Saint

I usually just try to make up prison bitch nicknames.

I came up with one years ago after sounding it out and liking it. I also always look at other people's names for inspiration but not to copy them if I ever wanted a new one.

I have The Silmarillion on my desk so if I ever need to look up a name I can glance through the appendix for good names.

I usually just think of the most raunchy, immature things involving ballsacks, meat faucets, etc.

Always use the default/canon name if you can find one.

Otherwise, baneposting. Every customizable character I make, if I can't find a "canon" version, is CIA now.

Except in Tearaway and LittleBigPlanet. Then I upload pics and turn all the characters into explicit and anatomically correct (where it counts) naked ladies.

I used to think about cool names that had to do with the context of the game (japanese names for JRPGs, edgelord names for medieval stuff, etc) now I just go with the canon names or shit like Cockbag, shithead, cumdump, armpits, dickboy, faggatron.

Or things that go funny with dialogue, for example, naming your character "Hitler" in your law walkthrough of SMT2 is fucking hilarious.

Oh also this, I have a dictionary with the Hobbit/LotR/Silmarillion lore and it's full of cool names

i put 2 to 4, sometimes 5 syllables together.

If i like how it sounds and feels, thens its a go

Naming a char in vidya isn't rocket science

and no, xXxNarutoSeshiSephirDragonBloodxXx is never an option user, for fucks sake

Either canon names, or if none are available, I go on Behind the Name and look around for something with a fitting culture & meaning. Adds a little something extra to the character to do so.

First off, I go to the character creator. Then I make a character I've been interested in recently. Alternatively, I'll name a randomly compiled character after an actor or someone they look vaguely like.

I do have a few characters of my own that I use from time to time, though. My personal preference is a female character named Catherine.

I never use my own name. It feels weird.

What ever comes to kind first.

>>>/kind/

I have my own naming conventions that I use. One is a standard catch-all name for my profiles that changes every few years, but I also I have fantasy and a sci-fi themed names I like to use depending on the game, with gender variants for whether or not I roll a male or female. It's my own special brand of autism.

This is pretty much the entire reason I like to do cosplay builds. It takes all the guesswork out of character creation

If I don't feel like calling my character faggot, sexgod or something retarded I just straight up make a name up: Trokkelda, Fswu, Hjorbia, something like that. Then come up with an archetype you want to follow. Bonus points if you come up with character development during your playthrough.

If there is no canon name, I just use my real name so that it would also serve as an indication of my save.

I mostly use my own name.
I'm fortunate in that my name is sometimes (wrongly, IMO) given to girls, so the fact I usually play a female character is no issue.

Nah, i just type whatever comes to my mind or something funny.

mah niggah

What's your name, user?

prolly sasha

Logan actually. I seriously don't get why there are girls with this name.

If there's a default, I use that. Otherwise: my own name if male, my waifu name if female.

A-are you a gril

If dubs, user is of the fuckable gender.

I'm not a fuckable anything.

Let me help you.

never seen a girl named Logan in any game, you just unlucky to find them I guess

That's my fetish.

I agonize over the name til inspiration hits me.

Whatever I like the sound of. I make up my own names all the time while trying not to make anything sound like a speshul snowflaek unless it refers to a creature.

Don't think about it too hard. Just mentally combine a bunch of sounds until something clicks with the kind of character you visualize even just aesthetically.

For example, if I wanted to name some small fat snuggable furball who can give you rare shit for making new equipment if you lure him out, I would go for something humble and timid just by the sound of it. I came up with Topaku (Toe-puh-kuu), literally just thinking up an example. It sounds completely harmless and uncommon enough to be mentioned on its own, meaning there's most likely something special about the little fucker I could look into.

After all these years i've managed to slim it down to just 2-3~ names i keep rotating and using on every game depending a bit on what kind of character you can make/play in it.

I once used the name Katarina quite often but… after playing Incredible derpventures of Van Memesing i just cant without hearing him yell it as the tag-along ghost for the whole game was named Katarina.

This is what i hate with names, if i remember it clearly from some other vidya, real-life or just some shitty tv-show it's hard to use the name anymore.

I can barely use half the more generic American/English names because of that and same goes to Finnish as i know too many Kati's and Tiina's and oh boy… let's not forget Russian names… all that slav-porn really does it for the names.
Then again i've had a friend named Natalija since i've been out of my mother's loose pussy so here goes that name an it's variants, Shame though as i really like it.

If female Alice, if male I suffer from the same shit as OP

I have a massive catalog of ERP characters and I just reuse their names.

I just enter either my name, the name of my waifu, or the name of a warlord, no sweat to it, spending time trying to think of a cool name is autism

I usually just don't be autistic, works alright

My characters are generally references to something similar. Like, in PMD: Explorers of Sky, I named my character "Terry", after the protagonist of Dragon Warrior Monsters.

Once or twice I've considered posting a thread on Holla Forums asking for a name. Maybe "name my character" should be a regular thread?

Offline: default>Roman gods>game theme>song titles

I use 3 names I came up with throughout my life.
I came up with one, second is feminized version of this, third is my fathers nickname.

Every time they ask me to name a place or I am doing the fourth character I die a bit inside. It takes me from 20 minutes to max of 1h to find new one.

Dubs already confirmed that.

Anyone else a fan of "true names" in fantasy? It's the idea that everyone has a name that encompasses their heart and soul, and you should never share this name with anyone, as learning someone's true name gives you power over them. Wizards will do their utmost to hide their true name from other wizards, and use various pseudonyms in their everyday life. The fact that you're just using a handle pretty much gives you freedom to be as nonsensical and lore-unfriendly as you want, even if you're a huge autist about such things. Want to be known as Deepcock the Enormous? Sure! Want to be Thunderbottom, the infamous flatulomancer? Why not! It's great!

so you could have a badass archmage running around that's named like Steve or something? that's pretty damn funny
