Code copying isn't something that should be discouraged. People learn by copying, like academic painters copying the works of masters. Hell if there's a programming topic you're unfamiliar with, it's often very beneficial to copy someone else's working program line-by-line while breaking them down so you can understand them.

As to the lack of effort, that's because of the potential money involved. It draws people without a real interest in the topic who hope to make a quick buck or gain fame.

2. As the game is being crowdfunded and not paid for by a publisher, they feel that a purchase is more justifiable since they are paying for the game's active development, not just paying early for a finished product.

3. This lead to the situation where people are not purchasing a product, but are instead donating money to a project and receiving rewards based on the amount of money donated.

4. Ships were some of the first things to be worked on and made available. As it stands, almost every single ship is currently usable in the PTU and Arena Commander. The "paying for jpegs" meme started ring hollow back in 2014.

Pre-ordering is much more retarded, because all you're doing is paying full-price for a completed digital good well before you can access it.

Backing is more like an investment, carrying its own risks and rewards. Where the standard price for vidya is $60, backers can end up paying less than that amount and get the full game. That's the only smart way to go about it. Backing is better, so long as you've put in less than the full price of the game. That way, if the game sucks or doesn't meet expectations, you're not out as much money as the faggots who preordered.
