Fate/Stay Night is an interesting VN. It isn't an exceptionally well written piece of prose, but the world-building and setting are both highly interesting. If you're already passably knowledgeable on mythology, particularly western mythology, then you're going to enjoy it more than someone who has no idea what the names being thrown around actually reference.

Originally, a major facet of the story was figuring out the true nature of the Servants. While most everyone knows who Saber is by now, even coming into the series blind, the original reveal of her Noble Phantasm (Excalibur) was a major turning point in the story. While Berserker, Rider, Caster, and so on are of less import, the identity of Archer is another major component in the story.

There are three routes, based on the heroine/love interest chosen. Fate is the most straightforward, with Saber as the heroine. Unlimited Blade Works is essentially an alternative route to Fate with slightly different themes, and is the more action-oriented story. Heaven's Feel, the third route, simultaneously manages to shove in more slice of life than either of the others, while also having some of the most impressive fight scenes and two bad endings (Mind of Steel and Sparks Liner High) which are famous within the community.

It's alright, if you're the type who likes to read. There's the anime by Studio DEEN which is a shitty adaptation that tries to cover all three routes. There's also ones by ufotable for F/Zero and F/SN:UBW, which are much better on a production level, though they do miss some aspects.

Of course, if you're going to be watching anime, my personal preference is Kara No Kyoukai, an older TYPE-Moon work which is my personal preference of the bunch.

The original draft of F/SN had no sex scenes, and featured a female protagonist, along with a male King Arthur in the role of Saber. The reason that this was changed was to make way for a male protagonist, and then including the sex scenes. Why? Because the Japanese are a bunch of horny fucks who only buy shit if it can get them off. The series was able to get its jump-start by being a porn game, and gained popularity on the merits of world-building and the power of marketing.

I wish they did this in TPP. It would have been sweet to have one last fight in Outer Heaven.

I believe it's due to the fact that most of the time, the "battle" consists of you sitting in cover for long periods of time, popping your head out, taking a shot, then going back into cover.

It basically is the "mosquito fight" of the video game world and it is not pleasant to have to keep chasing the boss around or having to just sit around waiting for the boss to cycle through animations before becoming vulnerable.

Haven help you should the boss be run on a RNG.

4's ending fight is a lot more satisfying and refreshingly silly. You find the corpses of the two pirates whose treasure Nate's been searching for for the entire game, and find they stabbed each other while fighting over the treasure. Nadine traps Nate and the main villain Rafe in the room as it burns, they both get the swords and a reaction based sword fight ensues.

I still prefer Lazarevic as a final boss fight because I feel it tested the skills you'd been learning over the course of the game better than the final boss of 4, but 4's wasn't bad. Certainly much better than 3 in that regard (and in just about every other).

To be honest I was half expecting nobody to know what game I was talking about. I'm pleasantly surprised.

It's not as obscure as you might think, given that it's a decent Square RPG. I had several friends who knew what it was before I brought it up, we ended up playing it taking turns on the chapters in my dorm room in college. Modern Day/Fighting tournament is still one of the best uses of that engine, too.

I tried playing it once years ago, but the combat system didn't gel with me. I didn't play for very long though, should I give it another go?

I'd say try it again and see if your opinion has changed. It took me a bit of time to figure out what moves were actually useful and then planning where to move and what to use to keep up pressure on the enemies. Also being healed after every fight is nice. and if that doesn't happen, fuck, it's been a long time since I've played.

I recommend the fighting tournament to start with, since it's pretty straightforward. Fight subbosses in any order and try to learn their moves and then smash the final boss and see if you like it by then. If by the end of the first fight or 2 you still don't like it, I think it's fair to stop. The game's got interesting story, but I wouldn't recommend it if you would suffer through the battles.
