Games that did Energy Weapons right

Games that did Energy Weapons right

Something I always wondered about, do flamethrowers count as energy weapons?

...

weapons are for neanderthals who cant defeat their enemies with words so they resort to violence

Love the SS Lasergun, just finished Metropolis and it saved my ass multiple times. Serious Sam weapons are really well designed and balanced as a whole.

Ballistic and melee weapons are kinetic energy, flamethrowers and thermobaric bombs are thermal energy, and microwave emitters are radiation energy.

But there will never be weapons that harness spiritual energy… Feels bad man…

What is the Battletech/Mechwarrior series for 500 Alex

in real life, no, because they shoot a burning liquid.

Laser guns in Fallout 3/NV are extremely fun to use. Infinite rate of fire and no projectile lag.

into the trash it goes

Laser weapons shouldn't be that loud either, but it won't be fun.

...

Did we play the same game

If you knew anything about physics you'd know that small arms shooting light concentrated enough to burn through armor would have recoil

The whole "done right" implies that something has an application in the real world to begin with and last time i checked monkeys in the real world are still killing each other , en mass, with high velocity lead projectiles which means that there isn't yet a viable option in it in order for us to compare the fictional counterpart to it and decide indeed which one got it right ,if any at all

tl;dr OP you're being a faggot again

Flamethrowers are incendiary weapons, not energy weapons.

They're still physical balls, most likely magnetically propelled.

dont listen to these dumbasses, every gun is an energy gun

It's just faster than other semiautomatic guns.

It means kinetic projectileless guns, autist.

u w0t m8?

His head reminds me of that kid from Xiaolin Showdown.

You know what I'me saying. Directed-energy weapon.

nah, you retards think only electricity is energy

Oh, now that'd be cool. Psionic projector guns when?

Step aside plebs.

The laser weapons in memelands were the best in the game. There was actual variety in how they functioned from manufacturer to manufacturer.

...

Done right just implies that they're fun.

What's the point of cool energy weapons if they do the same shit as conventional guns?
No reload version of human sniper rifle, downside is overheating and no ammo pickups
No reload version of human SMG, downside is slower projectiles, overheating and no ammo pickups

Why does the one in the fourth pic have a bipod situated on top of the gun? I'm sure it's useful for steadying your aim on the fucking ceiling, but other than that, it sorta defeats the purpose of having one.

...

...

Last I recall, plasma was good against shields and boolets were good against not shields
And all that shit you listed are differences

...

No, they count as squirt guns.

Very, very deadly squirt guns.

You're forgetting the stun effect the PR and PP has on targets.

Come on, now.

I always felt like the alt fire for the Drakk Laser Rifle was pretty good.

The beam rifle is a shit example since it's basically the same as the human sniper.

The focus rifle actually preformed totally differently.

Anyways, in the games, I generally don't think Halo guns are a good example outside of the Needler if you count it, but in the books Halo handles DEW's wonderfully.

protoss psi blades?

Excellent choice. Only problem is that it highlights the difference between lore and mechanics: MW3 pulse lasers behave in a way that confers the to-hit bonus of tabletop but breaks the lore mechanics. MW4 pulse lasers behave like in the lore but are slightly harder to aim than normal lasers.
Then again, in the tabletop, normal lasers have no to-hit bonus on ballistic weapons though they're hitscan. How could this be fixed? Pondered this question quite some time and my answer is that normal lasers should have a slight charging delay before firing. This way you'd need to lead your target like with ballistic weapons, Pulse lasers would fire their salvo immediately when the trigger is pulled and finish it faster than a normal laser needs for charging or a fired ballistic round needs for travel to the target.

Didn't care for how they turned enemies into a pile of ash regularly, shit was a pain to backtrack and loot.

Would've worked better as a Forerunner/Promethean weapon tbh

No need to retcon one thing with something objectively inferior

And obviously books are going to handle the damage a weapon does differently than a game

...

It didn't retcon anything, it's a separate gun from the beam rifle

What anime is this?

How could I forget this one

This one weapon had more depth than some fps games these days.

boku no I have no idea actuallu

I came here to rekt this thread with Elite Force 2.

Unfortunate that the knockback is so weak un singleplayer it'd be perfect for speedrunning. Also another great thing that they also happen to do with the hornet gun and snarks is how they introduce you to how the weapon works via something in-game.

Every version of the shock rifle in the unreal series.

That's not what done right means at all.

So good.

I wouldn't really call it a good example, it just acts like a slow single shot rifle

Only 90's kids will remember this.

I asked in another thread but no one answered me.
Why does everyone hate Clanners? Both in game universe and in gaming community.

The best answer I can give user for your question is this: Community-wise their tech is way above what normal IS tech is even on a weight limit class, a Light Mech Lance of Clan could potentially outgun and out Battle Value a Medium Mech Lance of IS and so on. For the Lore part, the're basically like space mongols that have a holier than thou complex and believe it is their destiny to rule the Inner Sphere, suffice to say that any run of the mill Inner Spheroid don't like their type around their parts, especially since the IS can dredge up enough excuses to war with themselves until Kerensky returns from the dead to yell at them to quiet the fuck down.

oh ok. Now I know

Not sure if this would count since it requires an actual slug to fire, but goddamn was this satisfying to use.

Do tasers?

Military grade Lasers are being developed as an anti-air and anti-missile defence. The issue of bullets not being fast enough to intercept missiles and aircraft does not apply to light. Logical application.

Cardinal of the Kremlin was a really enjoyable book about laser anti missile defense systems.

Why can no game make laser weapons right?

Never read it, seems like a good read though.

On Laser based defence systems and weapons, the major limitation is energy storage or mobile generation. There will be a point where the stationary "shoot the missile out the sky" guy gets a fast enough computer to shoot bullets out the air. That's the point where you begin to need big offensive Lasers that can't be shot down by other Lasers. Enter star wars.

Same reason people play laser tag with smoke machines. It just looks cooler.

if we were to create a 100% realistic laser weapon it should never work outside space or very thin atmospheres because of thermal blooming.
So electrolasers and microwave guns (or MASER guns anyway) would be the way to go.
A MASER would be specially horrific as it would boil people alive, potentially making them explode in a cloud of superheated vapor if enough energy is used.

The halo novels treat all their energy weapons as you describe stuff should, the games sadly do not, see >>9488956''

Anyways, having it done right in games would require a ton of specific and gimmicky systems like physics based wounding and environmental damage and so on

This is the good shit.

It was also utter fucking bullshit when you got one shot killed by some nigger through a wall

Such an underrated weapon, honestly

Not that good of a weapon, considering how late you get it and the scarce ammo, but

I am surprised you missed pic related

user plz

Do laser swords qualify as energy weapons?

...

One of my favorite depictions of a man-portable particle cannon is the Samurai from the Gamecube game 007: Nightfire. I think it's called a laser in the game, but it's a shoo-in particle weapon in every way from style to function.

Damn-near impossible to find footage of it, though.

its not really a laser, its an ENERGY BLAAAST

Step aside plebs

I am ready for the hate.

...

There are psionic pistols, gatling projectors and force guns in UFO Aftermath.

Just a question, but isn't W101 all about energy weaponry? Uniting into giant weapons with that color coated plasma or energy and stuff like that?

But if I'm wrong, then at least this nigga gets it. Still can't believe I got trilogy without selling my soul, dick, and dignity. Though I don't have a lot of that last one to begin with.

is there anyway to get this wolfenstein now? its a bit of a relic

kinda, all 101 come together to create the attack.

If found all the upgrade and it's marginally less of a piece of shit, even with the right perks you can snipe 3-4 enemies then you still have to wait 10 seconds for it to recharge

Why not have the best of both worlds?
The impact of a kinetic weapon, with the "'Fuck You"' of an energy weapon.

This space fighter I forgot the name of. In the demo there was a big blue planet that took up most of the screen.

The energy weapons fired right.

How it works and why:
1. Large projectiles
Because energy weapons have no bullet drop and travel over large distances, they need to be seen at long diatances, setting lead on enemies a lobg way away to include where they aee going, where they may go, generally everywhere but where they are. Light weapons are the opposite except for distance.

2. Mechwarrior
Good range, infinate ammo ballanced by taking very long to ready for another shot and generating extreme amounts of heat so by the time you are ready ti fire again doing so will cause auto shutdown if not from the first group's shot. So each shot has to hit a leg. And you need to move after each shot away from fire. So a sniping weapon for endurance play. Stay until you win against everyone and everything while the rest use their overpowered weapons to make any exposure outside of firing certain suicide, if not by the first shot then over time. Mechwarrior's missions had multiple nav points and various objectives. Would be even better as a freeroaming game, part of long patrols for the defense of a clan, skip long periods of inactivity and wake on action. Pick nav points and sleep to them. Either plan out fuel and armament or maintain routes of resupply with a lazer mech. And just go leveling cities until your mech is destroyed or a pickup has enough space to land. Best just wandering the landscape putting your shitty mech against greater defences and assaults for loot and personal interest, fight for the most pleasing fodder. Or for the scrap heap with the most soul. Paid in salvage from the mechs you down and in runs to collect more scrap. No mission repeats, dificulty continually rising whether or not you progress.

3. Killzone Shadow Fall
Haven't played it but the combination of assault rifle and sniper rifle is almost right. Sniping needs to be instant, not a switch or charge. Using the same ammo but depleting more for the sniper shot works, stick to using the AR as an smg, and firing sniper shots when sure you're on target. 24 shots, costing 8 to fire is a bit low. Need to be using both and keep going through a firefight. Say 60, and 8 to fire. Make shots shit on anything but the head, sniping shots 1 hit to disable that bodypart. Ballance having lots of ammo in the mag with very few mags, the others on charge. A good general weapon for small groups of enemies used to preserve collected ammunition. Primary weapon. Up the count to 80. Can fire during reload. Also allows for reloading all the time at the expense of accuracy and reduced recharge time.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter's eraser movie style gun with a trail works. High damage but slow firing. Say 3 hits instead of most of a 30r mag/clip, faster to 3 than the regular 30 too. Go for body shots fairly close every hit has to count. May need a breif moment before shooting too so keep close, keep pointing right at chest. A dirty weapon, ballanced by a long wait after reload before ready to fire again, no way of telling how charged a battery is and no way to recharge them. Need 3, may get 30 may get 2.

Turok gun isn't like that, just slow.

Need a variety of weapons. Energy is always an exotic weapon, specialised and with flaws. For people who like them. Mostly the idea of infinate ammo, over all other considerations. Better a shit weapon than to run out of ammo kind of thing. But a constant fire rate so a weapon never needs to wait before it can be uaed again makes it too weak to be interesting eg Quake 2 pistol. That infinate ammo seems a waste if just a primary but a good survival assurance. So if can't risk your life you can go around stealthy and use the pistol. Move faster and quickly scale things with it and no other weapons. Put it on a retractable cord to the chest for a fast drop when you need two hands.

If it is in a game an energy weapon should seem an old thing, not new tech. The product of an advanced world with defences against it. Old style weapons working better and vastly more abundant. Can be made by a shop with a sheet over it's stall. Energy weapons by factories.

Less loud too, old guns breaking the sound barrier with loud cracks, energy weapons anything else. Even hums that don't look to belong.

Deus Ex HR was shit due to the psycheshit in it's dialogue aug. The non lethal large radius shot that knocked people down was interesting, but useless. Going put of your way to not be lethal though and any weapon like that adds options. Energy weapons as either nonlethal or painful ways to die. Maybe even overpowered but requiring you to be part of a faction that makes the world worse in order to use to better effect over normal guns.

Story wise Army having old guns, war as a means to thin populace as corps and institutions prey upon people, using energy weapons. See old buildings leveled, people experimented on, cameras go up, streets patroled, a homegrown original atmosphere get advertising everywhere. See people too fearful to do anything. Same as now just with more of the old stuff to see. New tings made old. Lived in areas with generations of history. See the effect of people doing nice stuff, see it done regardless.

Be different for a game to have no way of helping at all, just witnessing that, ending up dying like the rest, everything getting worse. Instead of a push to win at the end just a means of not dying at this stage of things getting worse. Some muddy void of gass and guts, come across an enemy close enough to hear them make a whisper shouting in their mask and realise it is in english. This place just sonewhere to bury numbers under bombardment. The most effective and fool proof system currently active.

At various stages fighting to get people out of bad situations, someone's kid from having their brain cut in half etc knowing this end was ultinatwly what was coming. Maybe sone multiplayer efforts, in a vast cityscape expanse meeting characters in various situations and finding out they aren't infiltrators, or npcs but other players. Teamwork won't make much of a difference. Probably find out all non npc players are virtually enemies after all. Anything they do having bad results for everything. Both getting rid of cameras and such would be initated by the bad guys and get genuine npc or otherwise imitators preyed upon, them venereble.

Lot to think about, not sure thinking is all that good either. Taking someone on an adventure can't do that much harm. And there's always constantly fighting.

Voyeurism makes anything shit.

Could play to show how not making a stand against student shit has it do worse. Also show that the rest wont just because you do. Explain that as them being weak not them being traitorous. Or traitorous but that as your fault.
They have better things to be doing.
Have some experience to show you that you do too but also are a better candidate than them to chew assholes into bubblegum.

Find what is making everything wrong, with the least chewing possible.

it kinda sucks in the original Unreal, though

Maybe do a little bit of good everywhere, everywhere the end. A game where there is a hidden ending in doing something nice to the end. Thing is I have seen that end and heard those screams. It is not ok and people in such situations belong somewhere else. Their tormentors need to be taken through hardship to some greatness. Everything connected to them can't. Fuck extending scum into beauty. But break them from what they have sold too…

Make them earn some competence. With independence they won't need to forfiet to a larger group to survive or pretend advancement.

Strange end or development in taking scum out to the wild and seeing some life in them. Face an enemy in nature that is aiding independence the same.

Sentimental notion. Get more in their head than bullshit anyway. No more books of preached observation. Think, have a personality identity and story. Have duty. Have some fun. Have sone experience. Make your own solutions. Use your own eyes and your own hands to build your own dreams. Some fitness in the very least.

Might be better for the strange to cone first. If the rest want out then they have to be different first. Getting attacked assured, or followed. Needs to be so people can't follow to be free.
