My Cousin bought a Nvidia 1080 to use as an external GPU for his Macbook that has a 2.8 i7 quad core cpu

Was this a good idea?

yeah

Youe cousin is a smart man

lol, sure. that's how computers work.

What did he mean by this?

Brilliant. I think i'm gonna do that.

better than posting here about shit nobody cares about

I only have factorio on my macbook.

Why don't you go post that on Holla Forums and find out.

k

Bury him in a shallow grave behind his home, nobody will know.

The twist is there isn't a Tbolt3 port on the Macbook.

That's been working for me with a 960 and a thinkpad x220t.

okay anonymous, what's your excuse for being poor in the current year?

if he can get it to work, yeah.

The original specs of thunderbolt connections would have allowed this, back when it was still an optical interface. I don't think you can do it with the changed spec though, too much latency, not enough bandwidth.

You also need an enclosure with a PCI-e 16x slot in it, at least a 250w powersupply, and some magic. let's see..

this would be perfect but it's the size of a small PC and you need to put an adapter card into your desktop. so that's out.

This would be great except it's not out yet, it's probably only for AMD cards, and it's Thunderbolt 3, which won't be on your cousins laptop.

or there's this

using this

I hope your cousin knows how to put all that together.

TB2 has the bandwidth already.

I hope he at least figured out how to install a good operating system like Windows 10 on it.

here's a pretty good solution by some frenchy

journaldulapin.com/2013/08/24/a-thunderbolt-gpu-on-a-mac-how-to/

but again, it only works with kepler/fermi cards, you have to modify the kernel (lol), and it crashes if you close the laptop or unplug the card

Your bait doesn’t work when it’s not bait.

I just started working

I think he sounds like a dork. He could have spent that money on jawbreakers lmao.

tl;dr

Your cousin has less than a month before the next gen of gpus come out to get rid of it

you could buy, like, 2800 jaw breakers for that much

AMD is actually making a GPU enclosure that does all the shit you need, but only works for a couple laptops and GPUs. It also cost $500 and doesn't work on apple shit.

amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/xconnect

yeah I linked that already

That's what I get for just glancing over the post.

I'll leave it there so I can look like the faggot I am.

kumar, pls

*with the expresscard port

I'd rather be poor then talk to people, also hard labor for the gains
