Cave Story tried to be a game and put gameplay first though. Undertale tried to use the gameplay to push a narrative for the story; the RPG being "gamey and quirky" and fitting the story and concept of pacifism well.

The only thing good from Taleunder is music.

Undertale was alright. Not amazing. Personally I found that it had writing flaws like saying that only monsters could use magic, and then having the seven human sages cast a spell to seal the monsters underground in the intro. The monsters being sealed underground was pretty much a huge plot point for the story and, they pretty much flat out said that it's impossible for it to happen in their universe.

The fight with NEO was sort of ass because, certainly they would've learned from their previous fights with humans that they can damage monsters based off of hatred, right? And I recall there being a book in the library that said something about that, too, so it must've been common knowledge that was being thrown around in books and shit. So not only did they make NEO, a machine created to destroy humanity, weak to humanity itself despite being MADE to counter it, he also died in one hit despite being made of metal and not monster-whatever. You can't damage a robot with a knife. The story makes it look like it's terrifying that Chara gets out to destroy humanity but, he's just an angry child; someone could capture him and lock him up easily since he's only a kid with a knife. He's powerful against monsters; not against humans.

The OST was amazing though. I adored the OST during my playthrough. I have to admit I expected a more melancholy, mystical romp through a deadly underground of terrifying creatures, while being a lone child who doesn't understand what true hatred is and just tries to be friends with even the most vicious of beasts. What I got was a more quirky, goofy, wannabe JRPG that sort of only throws cutesy monsters at you alongside a bunch of goofy humor. I was expecting Earthbound style humor but I didn't really get too much of that, but eh, whatever. The game did what it did and I can't criticize it for taking a different direction than I thought it'd take; it's like ordering food at a restaurant when you don't even know what you're going to get, and then complaining when it's a pizza.

Gameplay was pretty alright. I enjoyed the combat and the Sans fight was great; he just felt a little too underwhelming when I finally beat him. Sort of disappointing rather than rewarding, since everyone was building him up to be impossible and the fight so far made it look like he was going to be one hell of a challenge.

Overall it was nice. It tugs at the players heartstrings to draw an attachment to it with the characters, writing, and music. Gameplay isn't too exciting, and if you removed the music I feel like a lot of the attachment wouldn't be there at all. Of course, alright games being made better by the OST isn't really a rare thing so, it's alright I suppose.

The game is only pretty good at best for me. I thought it was kind of fun but like I posted before, the gameplay felt like it took a backseat to become a form of narrative and shit.

It doesn't have anything to do with the fanbase at all. Of course the fanbase made it hard for me to want to touch it again afterwards but, that's kind of what I have to say. It's just not amazing, to me at least.

Instead of using your body to fight, you use your soul directly, therefore you're attacking and defending with your soul and the weapons and armor are only there to make you feel more powerful or more protected, hence why you can actually shoot a gun that has no bullets or why a simple heart shaped pendant is one of the most powerful armors in the game. When you attack Mettaton NEO, you're not really hitting his metal body, but his monster soul, which is of course, quite vulnerable. As to why Alphys didn't take this into account, well, she's shit and had little time.
