I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Taiwan, is in fact, Taiwan Province, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Chinese Taipei. Taiwan is not an country unto itself, but rather another province of the People's Republic of China as recognized by a majority of UN States.

Many people call Taiwan think of Taiwan as an independent country everyday, without realizing it. Through the Chinese Civil and Cold Wars, Chinese Taipei is often called Taiwan and thought of as an independent state, and many people are not aware that it is a legal province of the PRC.

There really is a Taiwan, and people are living in it, but it is just a part of the PRC not under direct control. Taiwan is a province; a subnational entity that has been under de facto control by the Republic of China. A province is useless in the political sphere unrecognized; it can only function in the context of a global state that is widely recognized. All these so called names for Chinese Taipei are really historical misunderstandings!
