Animation project that is not going to happen Part 2

Continuation from the last thread seeing that a lot of nice stuff came from it and there were some Anons still kicking around.

Last thread- >>889900

Well the webm there was made sooooo project successful?

I completely forgot I made that thread. Nice to see some people enjoyed it at least.

...

...

...

Are these old or new?

Well if its not going to be animated maybe you can do it as a web comic?

I was willing to do the animation portion, but we didn't get any writers, voice actors, or composers so that got shot down pretty quick. It was just me and a few other decent drawfags working on it. There just isn't enough steam or talent for a full on project at the moment, and I fear that if there was we'd have a hard time all getting along (see Katawa Shoujo).

again, no writers or people to lighten the work load. We've got some talented artists on here, but tackling a webcomic is still pretty damn hard. Don't want to dissuade, but we need a game plan I think before just rushing into a project. We need realistic goals and a schedule.

Its simple fam, baby steps. Start with storyboards, then try making a simplistic comic, then think about an animation project at some point.

In the end it will be only a couple of anons that do the heavy lifting and a million idea guys, and thats fine, because thats how community projects work.

Okay someone come up with an idea for story/episode/issue #1 then. Would it be an origin story or just right into it kind of thing?

I would have it as an introductory thing to set up the world. So the cop goes into the slum to hunt down a drug dealer and sees the cat vigilante and disagrees with him about his vigilantism but respects him hunting down criminals. Then they get overrun by the drug dealers goons and have to fight their way out. I dunno if you want it action packed but thats just an idea.

Someone should check the previous thread if one was posted.

How about something like:
A cold-blooded killer."

I'm detecting some similarities here.

One user tried, made a draw shitty storyboard with random picture something about the first day on the job for Coon and how he got to hate corrupted cops or something didnt save itand was too shitty to save itsorry user

I still think you should mix in some human characters. At the moment the creative market is saturated with these animal only worlds.

Sounds great. Don't know if you want the show action oriented or comedic but still that sounds badass.

Well it does… I don't feel it's something that warrants a series though, it feels more like a film.

I'm just picking up the threads. Didn't some guy try to pull off some animal comics in the past? With a hookbill detective or something?

So do you want comedy, drama, or action orientation? A mix? Should it be grim dark, realistic, or Saturday morning cartoon?
I'm up for scribbling some stuff out and doing a test animation or something but I would like a direction.
Also is everyone okay with ATHF/inferno cop levels of animation?

...

That's what stupid kids get for just standing around.

Honestly, I think low effort is preferable at this stage.

Well what do you think? It all depends on what sort of content ultimately gets created. I don't think it is wise to pick and force anons to fit their ideas within that mold. Instead, if it seems like a comedy to you, write up some joke or funny scenarios. Think a cartoon style would work? Create some concept art. Ideally, as long as the project continues to be worked on, anons will just pick & choose & remix everything contributed into a cohesive whole.

The hell?

I am somewhat of an aspiring writer, but I feel awkward writing an independent project for other people. Maybe if we have a scene-by-scene and the characters' personalities sorted out. Or multiple writers.

Also the tone, etc.

Tone should be dark humor. If we lose the humor in that they are walking, talking animals with guns we'll end up with something like that edgy furry comic.

So i should stop drawing them fucking?

they may be wearing rainbow shirts
but they are not a gays

Could be individual shorts that heavily focus on a particular genre. Kind of like how Heavy Metal was.

I do agree that there's a lot of that content aimed at kids, but there's not a lot of animal centric ones aimed at adults. There's Blacksad and Watership Down, but that's all I know.

...

I KNEW IT

Fish aren't reptiles.

Nice

I just put an elephant because they like to get drunk. death of an author and all that.

Tell me more.

...

That's what they want you to think.

Could be HP Lovecraft Innsmouth porn.

I'll animate all of this, for money.
Because you know what they say; if you do something well, never do it for free.

If paying to make it done was the point, the thread would be about crowd funding the thing.
This is about the process of making it.

I think comedy would be a way to go. We could take advantage that the characters are animals and use it as part of their behavior, instead of just going for the furfag conventions of THIS CAT IS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT BLACK PEOPLE that make so poorly written.

...

Tropes dont make bad writing, bad implementation of the tropes makes bad writing.
Rabbit cholos make sense because buckteeth lend to lisping, but that doesnt mean that every animal has to be race-coded or vice versa. You can for example take giraffes and make them stand in for niggers, that doesnt mean every single giraffe has to be a stand in for niggers.

Keep going.

Planning to do one a day, anyone can give suggestions for scenes/characters they want.
Really got to improve as an artist and this is a good motivator to keep at it.

maybe throwing race was a bad move, let me explain:

The main character is a raccoon. What do we know about raccoons: They are known to have great memory, great sense of touch, their predators are owls and coyotes, and they are omnivorous, so they eat anything. Also, according to kikepedia, they are associated with trickster spirit in some Native American tribes.

So, if I were to make a character, I would make him kind of a callous jokester who is always hungry, who may not be well liked, but is a competent detective with great sense of perception. We could make things truly cartoony and have him live in an actual trashcan, or have his colleagues avoid him because of his hygiene, in an Al Bundy-ish kind of way.

So yeah, the focus would be less of a person looking like an animal and more like an animal somewhat acting like a human. And I still stand by having a police squad-styled serial.

Can we throw in really weird but true animals facts?

That would be a heavy case of trying too hard to base the character on its appearance instead of the other way around. Aside from that the character archetypes are pretty much set already, racoon fits a bad tempered cop because the all the visual cues are appropriate, roughened up cat fits the stoic vigilante. Making the coon a "callous jokester" just burdens the character with the dreamworks desease of bad characterization.

...

making him funny won't make him less bad tempered. Hell, doesn't even need to be a clown, some deadpan humor could do miracles. There is a way to make a serious setting funny with sheer defiance of expectations. Also, cats are not stoic, they are cowards and most likely to be roughed up due to the continuous ass-kicking from some stronger cat.

I'm good at being myself, wheres my money?

making a character funny =/= making the character a jokester
you dont need to make the character literally spiderman in order to construct humorous situations arount it
you conflate character traits and writing style, stop doing that

also with the visual design actual real animal traits are only relevant as far as their mythology goes, one can use obscure animal facts as a source of a punchline, but cramming them into the character willy nilly does fuckall but dilute the archetype

This

user your shiftkey is broken.

Nice

Working on them side characters based on previously posted sketches. Professor gave me a green light and I decided to study Dave Rapoza's style for this.

Holy crap that quality

That's good stuff, user. I especially like the shading.

why do people think forcing memes is ever a good idea/

So in the last thread i heard some of you say to convert vietnam vet into gulf war vet based on previous sketch. So I did.

Shit man that looks badass.

Great design, got a good laugh out of me. The others are really nice too.

Would be neat to see an antagonist crime boss based on this person.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griselda_Blanco

She was the leader of a deadly Colomibian drug cartel that killed their competitors. Her biography reads like an edgy fanfic.

That is really impressive.

DC created that character, Ma Mhurder.

However, nothing's stopping you from making a new version of that character since DC pisses all their good ideas down their pant legs

Nobody can tell me the 70's comics weren't campy as fuck.

They were at least fun.

Got anymore finished art?

Like anyone would notice.

Looking good

Yup
This fucking bike took too much time.

Thanks y'all.

Everything looks amazing bro. Just tossing an idea out there, but maybe have the drug addicts look as if they have mange. More grit for the more depressing parts but plenty of reference material to work off of.

how'd you learn to draw objects so good?

...

Those concepts are nice.

If I'm reading this right, you think this character is a drug addict? Now that you say it, he does, but Galagos have brown eyes like that. It was kinda unintentional but thanks for critique/suggestion. I actually have a hobo character where that will come useful.

1. Draw the real thing
2. Figure out how it works (really important if for later step)
3. Draw it from head/imagination
4. Repeat from step 1. until your heads hurts a lot.

Thanks

Remember, if you have complex object like machines or motorcycles, learn how they work, because when you draw from your head, if you know how they work and try to draw objects as functionable, they will look believable, even if incorrect.
The goal is to make viewer believe, not to copy reality.
Same goes for learning anatomy. If you figure out what muscle does what, you just make it look like it performs that function, no need to go all Medical PHD on it.

Not the same user, but alternatively there is "how to draw anything" (shrimp example) DA guide which follows a similar set of instructions. Gives a good example of something you don't know how to draw (a shrimp) then tells you to research pictures of it, then tracing and copy them until you get their "design" down and then finally draw it from your mind without any references.

I'm really trying to learn to draw cartoons as of late and I've learned it all comes back to life drawings. You can probably draw a pretty nice single cartoon image if you invest some time into it but getting it all to really make sense and have weight is another thing. Everything has to come from experience and I'm going to practice every day from now on. Also Bridgman is useful of course.

Your explanation to draw objects reminded me of this user….not that is bad but simply got me thereplus I'm stoned so I guess it was easy

...

I wish you the best of luck man.

Got a source to that gif?

Drawing from life helps you with basics, you will have to step away from that in the future

Sadly, dude is primarily a tumblrtard, so you'll find most of his work over there.

As long as his tumblrtadiness doesn't extend past merely using the website, it should be fine.

You still alive drawfag?

...

I can't ask someone if he's doing okay?

I'm still here, just busy with everything. Currently working on digital version of them cholo rabbit gang

That's great to hear I hope things are going well with whatever you're doing.

What are the gangs influence?

Thanks

I don't understand…influence in what way? Like what inspired me or..?

Wanna give voice acting a shot hmu pls. I'll also consider writing and other non-art roles as well.

Do whatever, any contribution to this corpse of a thread is useful.

hes likely asking what prominent gang you are basing the designs on

That's easy, it's obviously MS-13 or any other Latino game.

Yep.

Thanks Captain Obvious.

Gangs are good because they look alike so you can distinguish a group from another group. I'm not from the US and I wanted a certain plot/cannon fodder bunch of characters that belong to a group. You would look at the whole group like a one big character, but with option of making each individual stand out if needed.

I chose Cholos because they have a very distinct clothing pattern (much like bikers) so I had option to make a lot of variety on each individual character and still not break the overall feel that they (the gang members) are together. I used some fake cholos and (i hope) real ones for refs.
I was hoping there is a taco here on the board to give me like some input on it, since I grew on a whole lot different thug culture (south-east EU slav culture).
I'm not educated in US gangs that much, I just wanted a distinct latino gang feel. Basically I wanted to make a bunch of very different rabbits that could be perceived as working together on a simple glance since I consider this whole group project a good character design practice. Also I wanted to put a different twist on the usual perception/portray of rabbits in comics and cartoons where insecurity and strength in numbers brings a whole different type of galvanization/organized culture.

...

is that beaner masturbating in public?

I think he's reaching/holding his gun

so then why is he using a gun to masturbate? and how?

Hey Holla Forums

Real quality posting user, you make us so proud.

user, I'm sure you can imagine a few reasons and a few ways. If not, lurk /k/ for a while.

Honestly if you're looking for the big designed stuff with gangs then look at what they wore in the 70s to 80s. Nowadays it's pretty meh unless you wanna throw bandanas and tattoos on every design or make shit up from scratch.

Nice

I've seen his tumblr page. I think it was primarily just his art and reblogging fanart of his work.

Then go back.

Sound fine, then.

Make him.

oh boohoo faggot

I like it a lot

Strong disagree. If it was a series, you could have the overarching plot of "prove that the the mayor is crooked and take him down without him finding out and shutting them down", with self-contained, episodic stories, all of which are working towards that goal.

C'mon guys I know I'm not the only drawfag here..

Shiftkey's busted user.

I draw, but I'm not too strong with it yet. I have to get my shit together and focus.

Well skill doesn't matter, we need peeps to contribute

I don't wanna be a jack but have you seen how much the numbers have dropped here in population? There's like 12 boards ahead of us and most of the things people do here are just fight and fall for obvious trolling shit. There's not even a drawfag thread anymore because there are no drawfags here.

You can keep going but as evident from before (when this thread was about to die like a week ago) you're barking up a pretty slow and bare tree. Sure someone may come along but I hope you like being the only artist in this thread for probably the next 3 months or more.

i see that there are over 2o portraits in the "faces of co" thread. We have enough drawfags, the problem is, no one wants to draw anything or engage in any OC.

It depends on the kind of OC.
I don't like to work in a cohesive and coherent group project. I prefer small, non-committing pieces and shitposts.
There's the matter of personal taste, too – even though the art is pretty damn good, I don't particularly enjoy the setting, apart maybe from the existence of weird fish prostitutes.

As always great job.

user those are fucking well done. It's really a pity you are the only drawfag here becasue this shit have potential
the rabbit chick have a base pic? I kinda feel my peepee grow

Is there any sort of standards to being a drawfag? It's sorta reassuring to know that Holla Forums doesn't need an amateur like me to drawfag, but neither does any other board.

...

Trying to ink in krita is a fucking paint — if it's not for the pressure, then it's surely that I can't into brush optimizing.

Very sure it's the pressure.

Just keep at it or try to adjust the pressure. Alternatively, just do pic related.

That sounds nice, although I can't help but take pictures and show them to anyone I can, and I don't have a good camera. Can't knock it, though.

Come to think of it, I might as well keep the sketchy look and stay true to her original design.

Alright this is the last one. I'll probably be coming back with this next year because we will have to do a comic as class assignment so I'll probably use all these characters and make some comics.

Yeah, drawfags here are hard to motivate.

I think the problem is one of both motivation and incentive. Maybe I'm the only one, but if I can muster up the motivation to sink a few hours into a project, I feel like I should sink them into a project I can have my name attached to it. Few people are in your situation where it can double as both an user project and personal one.

I don't particularly like furshit mammals or drawing them. It's hard to get motivated to draw something you don't enjoy drawing. That said it's pretty good and I feel for you, lonely drawfag.

I was ready to do some animations (see OP) but we couldn't get the writers or VA's together a couple threads back. Just didn't have enough people to strike while the iron was hot. Now I've got a personal and group project I'm working on so I don't really have the time to get into this one, but hopefully the comic does well. I wouldn't say you could call it a group project anymore considering how much you're undertaking.

Looking good.

You're taking on far more than you can chew.

Nah, both projects have pretty attainable goals. My personal project is just going to be an animatic for now to gauge interest. The group project requires about the same amount of effort as what I did in the OP. Depending on what project does better will be what I stick with.
