Most Chinese big-budget films are awful, on par with Hollywood in terms of dumb bland spectacle. Western franchises like Fast and the Furious and Transformers are insanely popular.

Japan has a better track record historically (Kurosawa, Koreeda, Imamura) and South Korea has been picking up the pace with contemporary cinema (Park Chan-Wook, Bong Joon-Ho, Kim Ki-duk).

I can only think of the Hong Kong films from the 90's and some martial arts movies. That and Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon. Also Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle as comedies.

When I was working in Vietnam I saw some Chinese films (because they had English subs for some reason).
It was there I saw the worst film that I've at least ever seen in a movie theater. The Adventurers starring a bunch of chinks and a fat disgusting washed up Jean Reno.
