Would you prefer Quake to have been the RPG that it was originally supposed to be, or are you happier that it turned out the way it did?

What about Hexen 2?

I have no idea why I didn't know about this. I guess, for some reason, whenever it brought up I thought people were talking about Heretic II. I have to try this now.

Does anybody else find this to be on of the most irritating games made?
Every enemy seems like it was designed for the sole purpose of annoying the shit out of the player. Its like an entire game of the fish from Ninja Gaiden. I do enjoy the game, but it pisses me off like no other.

It probably would have been so strange coming from the house of doom that players would have shit on it and id software would have tanked. People wanted doom with 3D polygons.

John Romero = I want to be artistically and creatively fulfilled

John Carmack = We have to make something that will sell

And anyway at that time they didn't have the technology to create whatever the fuck it was that John Romero was trying to make. Even now they don't. It's not technically feasible.

Fuck these things.

Besides the grunts everything else was designed to kill you. Their AI, positions, patterns and weapon combinations were crafted to make you use your head and make up a strategy, or think fast and improvise. One of the earlier enemies is the ogre, you can't from him because he has a grenade launcher and you can't close to him because he has a chainsaw. So what do you do? You have to bait him to do his little melee attack and then stay arms reach away from him and kill kill him then. The enemies were great.

/Thread.

Really? I thought a lot of people complained that it was so similar to Doom when it first came out.

given the quality of the axe it had I'm happy they didn't try and make the game more about melee

dunno about magic though, could have been neat if they had lots of spells or let you make your own

Is there a way to get Quake 1 running on Windgoys10?
I'm about to finish doom 1 I really want to play that one again

dude it's fucking easy

and boom you're done and now micheal$haft wont upload your porn folders to their servers and send the government to arrest you for having anime loli porn which will surely become illegal when shillary clinton becomes president

I'm not on Botnet10 because I want to, also I live in a third world hellhole so I don't think anyone cares if I have loli on my pc.

Install Darkplaces or Quakespasm, then kill yourself for using W10.

You're really, really lucky that the power of FLOSS means that no matter how many source port developers object to having their work specialized for an NSA machine, so long as absolutely anyone on Earth wants it for that NSA machine you will be able to get it on that NSA machine.

Anyway upgrade to GNU+Linux/vm'd Windows 7 faggot

No, it would have been a worse game in every way.

I'm not a huge fan of Quake, but no. It's influence on the genre is undeniable, and some of my favourite games drew inspiration from it.

...

If there's one thing hillary is good at, it's keeping pedophiles out of jail so I don't think that's a big concern.

Quake started the decline of fps-design so rpg for me, please.

Also, Bernie Sanders is the least worst candidate. Patriotism doesn't mean jack shit, it's a meme to sell bullshit to idiots. Hillary is a fucking broiler, Trump acts like a cunt who doesn't even bother considering to seek win-win situations over "MUH DOMINATION". Sanders's biggest sin is being apologetic towards BLM.

Trump has soul, but isn't a politician.
Hillary has no soul, is a politician.
Sanders has a weak soul, but is a decent politician.

surprising nobody, a cuck has shit taste in games and shit taste in presidential nominees

Quake 1 is one of the best games of all time. The level design and enemy placement are absolutely spotless and the lack of story is a feature, not a flaw. It's a perfect game.

Nice refutation, shitlord.

Do you know why Quake is shit?
Full 3D before it's time.
They had to cramp down the levels, giving player less movement options for strategy. They also had to cap the enemy count per encounter down to five or something, which led to them having to toughen up the few enemies that were there, leading into a shitty, linear bullet-sponge tube shooter garbage-fest Quake. It's an objective fact that singleplayer Quake is a bad game.

Donald Trump secured the nomination for the Republicans and the Democrats are too busy targeting their slander campaigns at themselves at this point, even if Hillary gets the nomination she still hasn't gone up to debate Trump yet, and Trump has a lot of fucking ammo he can use against her, like her past war crimes and more recently being a hypocrite wanting to ban guns while arming her security guards, the lady has unstable bowel movements and literally shits herself before public appearances so she needs to time them right, the dems probably don't even want her to have the nomination even though she's beating Sanders but just barely. More recent polls from NBC of all places shows Donald having a huge lead over her in public opinion strawpolls now as well, its ogre

they didn't want to delay the game any further. besides, qtest was popular enough to convince them a multiplayer shooter was a way to go

yeah better have trillions of same enemies that either smack you in face or throw a projective with varying health and power like doom was before doom2 (which is also shat on by Holla Forums for not having more gorefest levels and pushing level design to its limits)

do you know why you're completely wrong? Because Quake introduced proper 3D environments for combat. Having big levels wouldn't emphasize it, it would cripple it. Each episode progresses the challenges in elaborate ways, by the second episode you're doing combat in 3, 4, 5 layered arenas with underwater sections and interwoven secrets and experimenting with weapons and combating enemies that directly use the games physics against you. The first episode is mostly introductory stuff, and it manages to introduce new ideas excellently. Something a retard like you, who supports Sanders, wouldn't realize. From the placement of Ogres above the player, relying on the fullbright of the grenade model to show you how their attacks are affected by physics and are predictable for this reason, to distant howls of scrags as they spawn above you, to zombies appearing always after you're given either a grenade launcher or a helping of fresh rockets. The design has clear motifs that work in excellent ways.

The only flaw in the game is the spawn, which is never really used as anything more than a panic enemy, and is generally rather harmless, they just aren't too enjoyable to fight at least.

The levels aren't cramped, they're designed in a deliberate sense to direct the player to engage in specific game play scenarios to both teach them and provide opportunities for observing how the different mechanics and behaviors work. The levels are elaborate, even the early, simpler ones exhibit traits of multi-layered design due to how the secrets are laid out, from the classic e1m5, to the consistently brilliant episode 2. Quake experimented with new ideas regularly, such as in the classic, and innovative secret map ziggurat vertigo, which from the very location of the player spawn point exhumes a sense of brilliance in its design. The long, winding corridors of episode 4 show awareness for how the engine physics encouraged player movement through use of explosives or bunnyhopping.

Obviously, I expect all of this to go over your head. Quake clearly is a game you don't get. Shut the fuck up, you know-nothing commie faggot.

Having motifs doesn't mean they are interesting to play through. Quake is flawed on a fundamental level. The encounters are simplistic and predictable. The is really no reason to glitch-abuse the movement and "git gud". To me, you Quakefags are pretty much the jazzfags or hipsters of gaming. Fanatically loving garbage because you think a messy set of flaws is "intricate" or "dynamic".

Also, learn what communism means before you flaunt it out like retard.

they're exactly the same, except devs had better tools to make interesting encounter locations, most doom enemies have a quake functional equivalent so what's the problem?

you sound very much like someone who would enjoy d44m

Funny since I just yesterday watched some gameplay and thought: "ugh, this reminds me of Quake."

No, having more options does not always make it betterer, if you don't actually realize the potential of said options. It's why the vertical combat in Doom 4 is wasted potential because there's no enemies that are a threat to you when you are mid-air. Quake realizes the potential of its tighter level design well thanks to its weapon arsenal and enemy variety.
Quake works because all enemies hamper your ability (or force you) to move in some way. The rocket launcher/grenade launcher is in most cases the most ideal weapon to use due to its high damage output and AoE effect, coupled with a decent supply ammo. However, due to the cramped nature of the levels, it is not always beneficial to your health to use a rocket launcher thanks to splash damage, which in turn makes other weapons in your arsenal more suitable for the challenge. A skillful player will bait enemies into using their less threatening melee attacks in order to avoid getting burned by their ranged attacks. The tighter nature of the levels is what forced the player to get creative with his movement and tackling enemies. If you actually knew what you were talking about, you'd have used Descent 1 as a more suitable example of 'full 3D before its time' (released before Quake no less) with all the Hulks and their missiles which deal splash damage to you from behind once they hit the wall behind you because the levels are tight as shit. Yet even then a skilled player can dodge projectiles in a narrow corridor by sticking to one side, and moving to the other when shot at. Descent 3 then changed its level design to more open levels. Which for a game all about six degrees of freedom should have been an improvement on paper, yet the large nature of the levels and increased enemy HP + smaller enemy counts meant that most of the fights started to revolve around circle-flying and a lot of missed projectiles (I swear that the speed of your projectiles in Descent 3 is much slower than it ever was in Descent 1 and 2). Just play Descent 1 and 2, and 3 after, and you will see why what you just said was a bad idea.

The constantly changing layout of the levels begs to differ.
Aside from speedrunning, multiplayer, advanced movement techniques in singleplayer to avoid enemies and get to secrets.
You'll have to explain this a bit more. If you think that something like the fixed jump arc in Castlevania is bad, then I suggest you choose your words carefully.

I think his fundamental flaw is the same as something he can't explain.

Playing Quake with Kreator playing in the background were some of the most fun times my highschool self had.

Why are there so few Quake memes and so many Doom memes?

Also, how do you kill Spawn efficiently?

Shoot them before they explode in your dick. Spawns are there so your hitscan weapons get some love, so use that lovely thunderbolt of yours.

I remember why I stopped coming here.
Everyone is so toxic.

With a taste of your bait
I'm on a ride
You're a faggot I'm slipping under
With a taste of a bait paradise
I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're retarded

Yeah no I don't give a shit familia

You have to go back

wew lad

Stallman is a handsome bastard

I just don't understand why grenade launchers are more intimidating than rocket counterparts, fucking things bounce everywhere that I can't predict on when and where to dodge them.

I always thought of Raven as the game division of id, and id itself as the engine/techdemo division.
