It's still alive and well in Japan, though I don't know much about it's impact. Honestly it's about as alive as Pokémon, considering how popular both were in the late 90's.

Basically Toei never had a idea what to do with the franchise, did random shit and then didn't stick to whatever worked and just continued to do random things, which is why it died.

They are trying to revive it now with the continuation of Digimon Adventure that is running now, but that isn't working well to them.

Also Digimon Universe has been announced, which is a multi media thing and they're lightly hinting that it could be Tamers related, which could be interesting.

As far as I know, the digital world has always existed and certainly isn't stored in hardware in the human world (inb4 ENIAC, it never says that), but digimon as we know them came into being when data leaked from one world to the other and came to life.
Imagine going to another planet with indigenous life limited to primordial ooze, taking a dump in it, and skipping a billion years forward. That shit will affect how the alien germs evolve. Now consider that digital communication on Earth never stops and is increasing at a quadratic rate, so it's no surprise that most digimon take forms that humans would recognize such as dinosaurs and angels.
The possibility of "pure" digital life forms that predate ENIAC and never used human-made data doesn't seem to be explored very much, though I'm sure it appeared somewhere.

The first one got an english version in Hong Kong. It's okay. The sequels seem much more complex and like they have much more of a plot, but the first one is still an okay tactics game with collectathon elements. It's the type of game I wanted back when Digimon World came out. I just wanted a vaguely pokemon-ish game, and was disappointed to find a 3D virtual pet instead, even though I understand that it's digimon and virtual pets are the whole point.

They tried to make three movies that take place in three different times, one of them with a different cast of characters, and mash it into one plot. I mean Pokemon: The First Movie was shit, leaving even my nine year old self disappointed as I left the theatre, but it was certainly better than Digimon the movie, despite the Digimon anime being better otherwise.
