And on that note, I'd say speed runners are overall the worst, as they seem to be the most likely to have active disdain for people who like to play games at a leisurely pace and couldn't care less about speed runs. Normal players don't have a problem with speed runners, but speed runners seem to have a problem with players not thinking it's important to play fast.

I feel like designers get a face full of shit every time someone does a speed run of a game and completely ignores the time put into all the little details. Hell I'll go out of my way to explore areas a bit more, drink in the scenery, enjoy the eye candy that so many people seem to miss because they're so hell bent on getting the best time on completing the game when it's not a fucking objective.
Then you have metagaming, which usually plays into speed runs, because players have to keep finding new ways to exploit the map/engine/physics to do shit that normally would not be possible.
I say, if you want to speed run, do it on a game where being fast is a fucking objective, and metagaming is never acceptable.

Yeah, I don't know where you are seeing this stuff but I watch a lot of speedrunning and never see any of that. I've never seen a speedrunner say their way of playing fast is the only way to play. I have seen regular players get butt broke over speedrunners using a game's glitches or flaws to beat it faster though.

This is bait, but I'll bite it. I prefer to play single player, not because I'm afraid of losing (I play multiplayer games ocasionally), but because it's usually boring. Internet gameplay can be extremely shit, and because they're forcing multiplayer on everything these days (to make shorter games replayable, you see), you see games that are perfectly fine single player experiences with shoved multiplayer modes that are broken, repetitive, and pointless.

Now, if the game is designed to be played multiplayer (specially local multiplayer), I have no problem with it. I mean, take a RTS game; it's pointless to play against the AI unless you're doing very basic practice (hotkeys, building timing, map epxloring, etc.), because the gameplay is all about mind games and reflexes, and there's no point in beating up the AI beucase it's either too stupid to pose a challenge or it cheats (to artificially become "harder", like the Insane AI in Warcarft 3 that wasn't subjected to the "upkeep cost rule").

This. Even for my favorite games ever, where I could do a fairly fast run, I can't stop myself from stopping to look at all the little details. My goal when I play a game is to see everything the devs put in, otherwise I feel like I'm missing stuff. I'll even kill myself to see different death animations and stuff. I'll make sure to do things in different orders on later playthroughs to maybe get new dialogue or something.

That said, speedrunning typically requires intense knowledge of the game, meaning they did see all this shit in order to find ways around it. So though I can't bring myself to do it, I wouldn't call it degenerate for that reason. It is degenerate, but not for that reason. Just for the reasons that Goldeneye guy said.
