So whats the consensus on Peace Walker?

So whats the consensus on Peace Walker?

I'm downloading this now and its the only Kojima game left i've never played. When it came out i was so put off by portable ops and the news that PW was designed with a younger generational audience in mind that i never touched it.

Now though i hear people look back saying its the best parts of MGS3 and MGS5 combined in small bite sized chunks of gameplay designed for car rides or breaks at work or something.

And it has monhun content, which is just tippy toppers.

But what about when it came out, did anyone on Holla Forums play it on PSP? anyone at all?

PW is MGS meets monster hunter because Kojima back then was obsessed with MH.
But it's structure is different.
Playing MGS5 first and PW afterwards is sort of a mistake, you should play PW FIRST and THEN MGS5, that's the correct progression.

MGS5 is a lie, as in, it's not really MGS"5".
It's actually MGSPW2.
MGS5 should be considered an expanded sequel to PW and every promotional material made by Konami trying to market it as a sequel to MGS 1, 2, 3 and 4 is a straight up lie, MGS5 is literally a sequel to PW and it's clearly built for the PW audience in mind.

This is why MGS5 was so controversial, it was marketed to the completely wrong audience under the completely wrong name with completely misleading market.
And on top of that it had tons of cut corners and the entire final chapter removed because the Konami CEO is a huge cunt.

I heard that the 'expanding' upon peace walkers structure wasnt a good though. That the mission format works when designed for bite sized chunks of gameplay but in a big open world area it falls flat, which playing 5 and wondering why in an open world kojima didnt add random elements like the mist unit showing up at random with the weather changes it kind of makes sense.
From what i read at the time, and watching videos by people like mathewmatosis years later it sounds like kojima just thought monhuns style was the future and i think in my experience GZ's pulled that idea off better than the open world with lots of dead air time between locations moments of MGSV did.

Nobody did because nobody owned a PSP. Sales for Peace Walker outside Japan were a disappointment because fucking nobody outside Japan actually had a PSP to play it on.

Like this post here says that it's MGS x MonHun. Unlike MonHun and MGS5 you are punished for killing things which is fine because MGS but not fine when the game gives you 5000 fancy death machines. Game plays a lot better on console/emulated than PSP and I bought it day one (without even knowing about it's existence) and is a lot better than MGS5 imo

As a PW fan, MGSV did some things right and some things wrong.

There's a lot of dead air and the open world aspect isn't the best, but if you play 5 seconds of a veicle boss fight in PW you'll snap your fucking PSP in two, veicle fights in MGS5 are massively, massively improved.

All in all coming from PW, MGS5 feels less tight and organized, but more fun to play in many aspects, i would say overall both games have their pros and cons.

PW is basically consistently fun as long as you work with it's peculiar non traditional structure (that, having played MGS5, you're now familiar with) but it's veicle boss fights KILL the game, they almost ruin it completely, they're horribly badly designed in every way.

I owned a PSP for crisis core.

I owned several movies on UMD and spent far to many hours playing innocent life: a futuristic harvest moon on it.

no regrets.

after deus ex: HR's launch day bosses on a stealth jensen i can deal with most levels of shitty boss fights.

I honestly hated the fact that you're punished for killing, why even bother let the player buy all the weapons?

Same with MGSV, though they apparently changed it a bit in PP. You have all these weapons and the game gives you low ranks for using them.

Other than the vehicles being damage sponges, how are they badly designed?

So much they had that extra part where you could fight some of the monsters from monster hunter.

Peace walker a great

Honestly the tranq is so OP in MGSV with reflex mode i never had to kill anyone, even the airport fight goes bonkers if you make a silenced tranq sniper and run the moment the fight starts.

PW isn't for you

When facing the tougher ones, not only were they disgusting bullet sponges, but if you wanted to go full non lethal and most importantly S rank them, you had to cheese using the bandana and fulton mines and other silly tactics, making sure to tranq or extract every single wave of soldiers while avoiding detection, and THEN tranqing the pilot (i sure hope you've got a silenced mosin or you're fucked).

They were just this incredibly boring slugfest, by far the worst part of the game, Kojima got TONS of complaints from the playerbase both from the west and the east, reason why they were completely rebalanced in MGSV.

As a big MG and MH fan i am excite.

If only getting the HD version off psn let you play it on the bloodbourne machine, i havent bought a new ps3 release since atelier meruru.

SHUT UP IT WAS COMFY.

Still sounds like better design than some choices made in the other big konami ips exclusive psp outing…

You can s rank it by preparing for your mission and actually putting yourself together enough to Fulton as much as you can and slip back to cover to assault the tank silently. Just gunpoint the fuckers into a corner and then snake around the tank while taking potshots

Peace Walker is fucking fantastic. Love the variety of mission types, the online co-op and the incredibly deep gameplay that develops when you've upgraded mother base enough.

Do yourself a favor and dont stress out about getting low grades on the vehicle battles at first, you are supposed to be barely beating them. Keep fultoning and snagging guys.

Go online and be inspired by some of the playstyles you'll see. I saw a jap stealth capture a helicopter with decoys and a tranq gun.

I could talk for days about the immense political analysis this game provides

Die-hard, complete kojimafag here. It's honestly one of the worst games, right up there with MGSV. It's commendable that he was able to do all of this on a goddamned PSP, though.

Honestly, go ahead and call me a shitposting baiter, but Portable Ops was just a stronger Metal Gear title, and just game overall. PW just made shit too simple and slapped on tons of annoying vehicle boss fights. I could almost swear it wasn't supposed to be a metal gear game in the beginning. My two cents.

What said is correct, though. The side ops were perfect, and IMO would be the only reason to play PW. PW is a good, wholesome casual experience that's good in short bursts if you're the kinda guy who loves portable games and 100% completing them. It's perfect in the "comfy mobile game" regard.

I don't know how that qualifies you or gives you credibility.
If anything you should've specified "traditional MGS fan here".
Because the way i see it the traditonal MGS games and PW/V aren't the same audience for the most part.

The two can overlap but if you like normal MGS games it doesn't mean you'll like this, in fact it's quite likely it's structure will alienate you right off the bat.

I would say im a metal gear fan, since 'traditional' usually means MGS1-3 when i like MG/MG2 just fine.

I even really enjoyed Metal Gear AC!D, call the cops, they will never find me

Fair enough points. I agree. I only added in the "die-hard" part because I own, like, every single game and each port of said games and their japanese versions. I never say "no" when I see kojima games in stores because some aspergers-level shit goes off in my head that convinces me that I need the thing no matter what. Hell, I bought the fucking vita AND the PS4 just to play Metal Gear. Two whole fucking consoles just for Metal Gear. too bad I found out too late that MGSV was gonna be on PC. I immediately dropped the pre-order for the PS4 port and went for the best possible experience. Spent ~$1000 on a PC.

As far as I can remember, AC!D was good. The only spin-off Metal Gear game that was bad, was the iPhone tie-in to MGS4. What a fucking mess that was.

And on top of that, I've made it a goal for the past ~4 years now to buy the collectors japanese edition of MGS2. It's gonna cost hundreds alone just to get the damn thing. Don't get me started on how I'm gonna need a japanese TV, PS2, and power converter just to play it the way it was intended.

Garett is that you?

So do you have your kojipro mug and shirt yet?

I hope you already got ZOE HD on PS3 and made sure to patch it, else when the servers go down for good or something like that and ZOE 2 HD is stuck forever in it's initial messy state your aspergers is probably gonna kill you.

I don't "do" gear. The average gaymer has turned the foxhound symbol into wal-mart tier "HEY GUYS I KNOW THIS GAME, YOU SEE THIS I GOT THIS FROM GAMESTOP FOR 5.99"

Also, fuck putting one of the cancers of the industry on a shirt and parading it around like some sort of jackass.

Who? The Thief protagonist?

I liked it, unfortunately the PSP still has somewhat terrible controls, but it's really enjoyable.

I still think like the idea was better done in MGSV, but PW was a step needed to get to MGSV, so it's not too bad.

I only currently have it on 360. I spent years seeing a collectors edition sitting on a shelf at a local gamestop for the PS3 for $70. I didn't get it in the end because I'm fucking stupid. I emulate now. ZoE1 has a nice atmosphere, but ZOE2 has better gameplay. I haven't finished either of them yet.

MG/RE cultist supreme.

Do yourself a favor and keep looking for it.
Only the PS3 version is patched and post patch it's not the same as just emulating the PS2 version, it has different effects and shit, they really did a number on it visually.

ZoE1 is short as fuck, it's literally Ground Zeroes.
ZoE not only looks amazing, but it also plays fantastically.

People who call themselves fanboys of MGS are usually cancerous shitter betas who need to be put down.

Hes one of the Mega64 guys so that sounds about right.

MGS fanboys are some of the best bros on the internet

I bet you like tumblrtale

Fuck you, I have enough shit to buy as it is already. Fine.

I liked the darker feel of ZoE1, though. Felt like a comfy little game that you'd buy randomly at the store for five bucks.

It does, most of that comes from the terrible cringey cutscenes.

I do love the retro feel of ZoE2 with the anime stuff, it's one of those things you never get to see nowadays.

how do I get Big Boss rank on MGS3? I mean I know I need to git gud, but how? I know I basically have to speedrun the whole game but that's a fucking pain. Do I just keep smashing my head against the proverbial wall until I get it?

pretty much, yeah

They have good taste, but they're almost always passive losers who enjoy their oekaki and memes too much. It's annoying seeing them make so much community content for MGSV. There was so much better fanshit before V arrived. Now it's just "LOL LOOK HE'S OLD AND HAS SCARS, HERE'S YET ANOTHER COMIC OF HIM AND OCELOT ACTING KOOKY. HEY GUYS, EVEN THOUGH THE GAME IS SHIT PAST THE FIRST 110 HOURS, LET'S KEEPING REMINDING OURSELVES THAT IT EXISTS."
It hurts.

Sometimes you cant help being a whore bro, give in.

In terms of atmosphere i prefer ZOE1, for sure.
Most people straight up love ZOE2 and shit on ZOE1 and recommend people to skip it but i think it's just because both ZOE games are trying to emulate different types of anime.

So ZOE1 is akin to a slower, more emotional and introspective kind of anime, while ZOE2 is a fast paced action packed kind of anime with the hot blooded protagonist and everything.
So more people will instantly like the second approach compared to the first.

You're just cynical user, the fan content is as good as it's always been. Comics with Snake and friends have always been cooky since that's so prominent in the games.

But then you have the counter which is people that see Davids trigger discipline and start to act like its hard conspiracy sci-fi like a micheal chriton novel. When anyone with an ounce of thought knows metal gear is basically westaboo anime fan fic writing wise.

and thats why its amazing.

To this day, I have yet to find a game as hard as 2/3. I can't even beat either of them on hard.

And no, dundertale was boring, and I stopped after the first hour because they stopped giving me skeleton banter. I spent most of my game time with it minimized while I watched some american asian porn.

It was reminiscent of cowboy bebop type stuff.

Fully agree.

Idk, I hate seeing content based on the bane of my existence.

Are you talking about the fan theories? Well, yeah. Beyond 3, you pretty much NEED fan theories if you wanted to enjoy these games plot-wise. Unless you also like the cutscenes like I do. Say what you want about the stories, but Kojima is a great filmmaker, and always pushes the boundaries in the film/game balance instead of simply making shit like heavy rain.

Best game in the series. Loved it on PSP

I think I just got ptsd. Also hated how I missed the "real" ending and found out about it in V

How the fuck is that possible

MGSV would've been so much better gameplay wise if it had a co-op campaign or at least a series of side ops with a co-op focus.

Nope, I totally agree. I enjoyed PO more than PW. Even though the story was mediocre, I didn't find it actively as bad as PW's. I also could stomach PO's base mechanics more than PW, which felt like a massive time sink for shit that didn't matter.

Yep, that shit specifically but the entire concept wasn't implemented very well and it affects your grade.

Took a buddy like a month to do that scene, but he's got the wrists of a humming bird.

In terms of story, I think PO did better because it still had emotional roots. It was a really weird and bad rehash of previous games, but it kept the "nation of soldiers" idea and constantly threw it at you, along with forcing you to realize that there are consequences to everything, in this case, the philosophers' legacy being lost. Among a few other things. It forced a personal relationship with your soldiers constantly throughout the game. It was something great that Peace Walker simply gave no fucks about in order to focus on advanced politics and philosophical "bombs are bad" bullshit. Kojima needs to stick to his strengths and keep to identity, not this war room philosophy nonsense that in the end I have no control over. Telling me bombs are bad teaches me nothing, whereas the idea of subcommunities creating safe spaces and shit like what you are and what you mean and shit like that are core ideas that everyone can learn from and have a growing experience from.

PW failed in the emotional regard by throwing in tons and tons of fucking old politics that had no universal message about them. Just a ton of hamfisted "muh nukes." And don't get me started with the shoehorned AI "woah man what's the difference between humans and comnputers? what if, like, we had computers that were like us" bullshit commentary that, while I enjoy, has been around as an idea for decades now. Into the trash. And the whole south american rebellion "muh revolucion" shit sprinkled on it as if I should give a damn about these people when I'm only being told what they go through, rather than shown.

As for base mechanics, I also agree.Kojima is getting too high off of these autistic wait periods and how everything needs to be micromanaged. Leave the Simcity shit out of it, please.

While i agree with a lot of what you said, i think PW's place in the larger fiction is important because of its nuke story.

By showing how deterrence is useless against an irrational enemy, they made the private military groups more important because they could then be engaged secretly, Kojima using the Sandonistas to show how the CIA funded destabilization efforts from local militias after learning from vietnam.

That marriage of political strategies carries over to the phantom pain and global proliferation and finally to MGS1's themes of nuclear storage and dismantling efforts that would result from it.

Not saying PW's story wasn't ham fisted and forced but it has things to respect.

Well, yeah of course. And hell, I'd probably enjoy it if it wasn't so poorly fucking done. I can see where they were coming from, and respect the fact that they chose to focus solely on the main theme of Metal Gear as a series, but they really just dropped the ball on execution and should've made it more heavy undertones rather than everything the game was about. You can easily set up the rest of the series, on top of making an emotional/original/important point and talk about shit that normally isn't brought up.

Like fuck, that's pretty much what I was hoping for in MGSV. I'm not gonna play an MGS game simply because it sets up another, I play it because it sets up another ON TOP of giving me an already cool story about more personal shit, including good characters.

Whatever, no changing it now. I think a solid heh trilogy is more than enough to ask for.

Everything post Snake Eater (or Subsistence) is shit.

Sorry for not spoiler tagging this

I'm gonna rank the Kojima Metal Gear entries

MGS3 > MGSV > MGS4 > MGS2 > Peace Walker > MGS > MG2 > MG

Casuals not welcome

The torture QTE's are nothing compared to the extended flashback QTE fight with the boss, which goes so far to use fucking dpad directions, and you lose the fight anyway and the QTE's just make you lose a little bit less which apparently somehow makes the flashback scene continue. You need to do it every time you play that mission, it's connected to that total cunt strangelove, it doesn't even make much sense why it's happening in the first place, and it serves no added purpose in any form because most people already played 3 and would've experienced the cutscenes of snake getting his shit kicked by the boss.

But none of it even matters because it's a fucking flashback in the first place, how do you even lose a fight in a flashback? Every time you fail it just gets more confusing, how do you have a memory of a fight that you lose in but then you misremember it that you lost harder and have to remember it again?

I hated peace walker. I honestly dont even remember the story to it because I hated the gameplay so much I just rushed through it to get to the end before playing V. Then I found out V was boring too after a while and never beat it. I still dont even know what the point of peacewalker's story was honestly other than big boss being a whiny faggot.

Konami wanted more games and Kojima is one of those guys that just can't say no, he also hated Portable Ops so he wanted to fix that.
I'm not a big fan of BBs setting, give me the modern 1/2/4 style any day.

I sorta agree with you but i don't like to rank MGS1 and 2 with MGS3, 4 and PW and V in the same group when it comes to gameplay, the gameplay is way too different.

MGS 1, 2 are "arcade", fast, very speedrun friendly etc.

MGS 3 and 4 have shit like footsteps being heard if you walk too fast, and with 4 aiming was sorta restructured.

PW and V are structured entirely differently.

I don't know, all these games are so different in terms of how they play, not all of them are that easy to rank as a whole when strictly talking about gameplay.

kinda late reply but fuck I meant I found out about it in Ground Zeros not V specifically. I'm talking about how paz betrays snake. I defeated peace walker and saw the credits roll then quit the game. didn't even get to use the fucking metal gear. I then started GZ+V the next day. Also should mention I played all the mgs games (except 4 and Portable OPs) a month after V came out so I didn't read any threads about MGS at all

qte's in general are a cheap way of implementing action into gameplay. While I appreciate how they were able to get the game on the psp, I would rather they remaster it with less linear levels and bigger maps like the other MGS titles.

This really wobbled my jhonnies.

You never played 4? shit son even with some of the worst moments in the series its also got the best TECHNOLOGY moments as well.

It's shite. If you didn't like it you won't like Phantom Pain either

STORY/WRITING
EVERY GAME EVER >>> MGS4

Stealth and story were shit, but controls were a massive improvement over PO and there's no more need to drag soldiers into the truck all the time (I also like PW maps more than PO). The game was developed with playing on the go, so the gameplay is done with that in mind. Therefore, simple CQC, base management grinding, bullet sponge vehicle bosses and almost blind enemies were expected.

The lack of Codec and cassette tapes can be blamed on disc size limitations, so I didn't mind it. And listening to tapes from a portable console is quite comfy. To be honest, I'd be more glad if PW was a spinoff like PO and not a main series game.

Now MGSV was a straight-up port of the PW system with some improvements and a lot went wrong because managing, grinding, listening to tapes, doing the same missions over and over on a stationary platform is boring and exhausting for me, unlike a portable one. So I ended up enjoying Ground Zeroes much more than TPP.

And, of course, the story in V was even worse than MGS4 so I'm not even counting that.

I honestly expect TPP was meant to have way more GZ style bases with industrial areas instead of copy pasted desert buildings around.

But MGSV is always going to be a 'what might have been'.

A phantom pain that never goes away.

I've also expected more indoors, judging from the FOX Engine showcases. But, of course, never ever. The engine had potential, but it's lost if Konami's gonna use it only for fucking PES.

Considering SNK playmore is getting out of Pachinko and back into videogames because japanes planning to legalise real gambling i would never say never. The new heads of Konami are chasing some stupid ideas, but when they fall flat they will probably figure 'weve got this engine lets use it' but i wouldnt expect something for years.

Well i installed PW and just played through the opening and i really like it, though its wierd you cant go prone and move.
Still i could see this on the vita in HD being a nice pick up and play title.

Yeah, think of PW more as a metal gear shooting gallery. They simplified map composition so that you were forced to actually engage enemies and fulton them. It makes the stealth less interesting but doesn't make you feel so cheap for using the tranq gun.

Iys interesting how the HD version says "do you want it to play like the psp version, mgs4 or monster hunter freedom unite?

dare user try and revisit - THE CLAW?!?

Hello Reddit

MGSV is not MGS5. Peace Walker is MGS5, except Kojima was too big of a pussy to call it that because PSP.

It's an excellent game, though the traditional stealth elements pretty much go out the window. There's a lot of extra content as well.

The only problems are, of course, that it's a shooter that's only on consoles and the PSP. Never a good thing. More than that, there are fucking obnoxious QTEs, and while you don't die if you fail, they're tied into your ranking so missing even one action means you're disqualified from S-rank.

All of that being said, it's really pretty fucking obvious that you are from Reddit, and you really should fuck off back to there. Thanks.
