Hey user, did you know that disk rot is still a thing? That's right, little holes in the data later of your disc, or if you are lucky, more near the center.

Go on and hold your favorite disk up to a light and see how many pin sized holes are in it.

I didn't know this was a thing until 5 minutes ago.

almost all my games have them.

Oh fuck you OP.

Most of the shit I give a fuck about is on cartridge anyway, so no big loss. Will be a bit pissed about Sonic CD eventually giving out though.

My pirated copies of Parasit Eve and FF Tactics work like a charm after almost two decades and they've been through a lot over the years (CDs back then were pretty darn expensive and much thicker).

I lost lots of DVDs though, legally bought stuff and ones I burned myself. Even with minimal use and lots of care some died for no reason.

fuck theres a huge one right in the middle of all my discs, what do i do

Anything you can do about it?
Anything you can do to prevent it?
And most importantly, how long until it affects the quality of a disc's performance?

Shit that got me

they are so small they shouldn't fuck anything up.

it just get my OCD going

You're fucked, throw them all away.

...

I was expecting to see that manga page ITT. You know the one.

Aw damn, that was a missed opportunity on my part.

You're alright.

I have never seen or heard of a pressed disc suffering from disc rot. Laserdisc yes and maybe some cheap first generation music cds. But never with games or movies and i've got a huge collection of discs that span all the way back to 1995.

And anyway laser rot is where the glue fails between the two polycarbonate layers and the layers begin to separate and it starts to oxidize around the edges. And it will be very obvious. It can't start anywhere else because there's no way for air to get under there.

FUCK YOU, OP!
NOW I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Then maybe there's another name for it? I don't know but even a new game of mine I haven't played yet has one.

Shit man what the hell did you DO to your disks

CD's actually have voodoo magick to account for that.
skip to 5 minutes

Amidst my panic, this got a sensible chuckle out of me.

...

Why the fuck did I listen to you niggers?

still better than digital if you store your discs properly

everything is temporary, you need to learn to embrace loss.

None of my discs have this.

Why the fuck did I listen to you niggers?

>check my Simpsons: Hit & Run for Xbox

It's 2015 user, why are you still using consoles?

I did. My discs are still decaying before my very eyes.

I WILL NEVER EMBRACE LOSS

one day i will be immortal just you fucking watch life sucks then you die

Yeah because that'll help against chemical erosion. You sad morons.

I'll be dead long before this becomes a problem anyway.

So SSDs last forever if you don't rewrite them?

mine is in mint condition

Any day we could suffer a CME event and all the vidya will be gone.

Day of the Frog when that happens.

...

I wouldn't worry about it to much. A tiny pin sized hole isn't going to do much, especially when you consider how scratched to hell some games are but still read. Also, see

counting the days

my demon's souls 10/10greatesthits has a scracth or two dots.
help

That's not really worth anything. If you had a Black Phantom Edition, then I'd be sweating bullets myself.

The fuck is this? Did build quality decrease as the industry got bigger?

Very possible. At least it'll only be the shitty games that get wiped out in that case.

What if theres a bigger hole on the outside of my disk?

QUINTS

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOT THE QUINTS

You madman

*noms ur dub sanvich* :333

The thought that 900 years from now our descendants can't play Colonial Marines haunts me at night.

And yet Gone Homo survives.
actually, so will that masterpiece.

Disk rot is the result of molding in poorly maintained disks, or from systems that are poorly calibrated and can burn holes in your disk reading it PSone Go fuck yourself

Stop not taking care of your hardware you retard:^)

No, the flash memory only works because the cells hold a charge. Eventually the charge leaks down and the cells will lose their memory. Even old school eeproms with a battery backup the battery would eventually die and the eeprom would lose its charge.

It's not that kind of laser numbnuts. It can only read the reflective spot and bounce back a 1 or 0, unless you are burning a disc it doesn't actually change anything on the cd's surface at all.

The reason you get errors with a miscalibrated laser is because it can't read the 1's and 0's, not because there's something wrong with the cd.

Sure user, Don't worry about not having and OG PS1. It'll be fine :^)

I have two PS1's and they sell them every day for like five dollars. Also if you do the trick where you swap a real disc and a burned one you only need to buy one game.

As I said, I have a new game that I haven't played or opened, just checked it, and there's one on there as well. I'm guessing it's more due to cheap mass production.

Well that too, but high quality printed disks have less of a problem with it, and you deal with it less if don't make an environment for bacteria to grow in the cracks and make them worse and shit.

I remember the hype.

MUH 100 YEARS STORAGE!!!

...

Quints checked by the Assad

Yup, shit like hamming code and other error correcting code checks the validity of the data being transferred.

What storage format lasts the longest and how long does it last?

...

Not a single one in my 2 1/2 decade old disks, take better care of your shit

I see what you did you motherfucker

...

Magnetic Tape.

Currently the most efficient method of permanently storing large amounts of data. The problem is that, while the tapes themselves are cheap, the readers are big and expensive.

Ironic that, in this day and age, one of the oldest forms of digital storage still reigns as the best.

As for longevity, all of your VHS tapes and your Cassettes still work, don't they?
I once found a cassette out in the forest, covered in mud and dirt for who knows how long. It had been half written, so I decided to wash it out and play it back.

It was mostly silence, but a bunch of 1-2 minute breaks in the silence of someone strumming a guitar. Sounded as it should.

Yeah, nothing's happening anytime soon. But I am worried about how I'm gonna keep dying/lost media like PC-98 images or old hentai/anime for the long term. Shit keeps me up at night when I think about all the data that people spent blood sweat and tears on decades ago is being erased from the earth at an extremely uncomfortable rate.

They spend millions on saving shit like dog encyclopedias, but when it comes to shit like movies/vidya, they shrug and pretend as if shit that's written down makes it somehow sacred.

Make your own backups.

TB storage is cheap as shit now to rip dvd/blurays all day long.

Not only is disc rot a thing, but most discs from prior to 1987 have ceased to function at all. Discs today are a lot better off than discs manufactured 30 years ago, but it's impossible to "fix" the problem. And the record labels want it that way, every time your disc gets fucked up, you're forced to buy another one if you want to keep having that CD/disc.

The only two options to fix this at this time are flash media (which has an alleged lifespan of 50 years), or digital download. They've gone out of their way to painstakingly preserve the fuck out of files and music/video these days because of film and disc rot.

Physical master race, amirite?

Uh, they have? Do you even know what a CME is?

…but MP3s do degenerate over time?

You know, while that could be an accurate statement you are deliberately obfuscating the point.

Wage gap tier shittery.

I don't see it…

Luckily we have the internet which, at least for now, has helped preserve a lot of stuff that would be damn near impossible to find today…

also, if somebody would happen to know a torrent of all those old pixel hentai or VN games, I'd appreciate the spoonfeed. I've got a pack of images from them but can never find the actual games.

Yes, go ahead and call me a liar. But while you're busy worrying about whether or not I'm "obfuscating the point" I'm not relying on optical media any more. Store your shit on an SSD or a flash drive or lose it.

You're arguing for the result as evidence of the process. That's wrong you twit

...

I think the autistic one is the one that can't put two and two together and realize if you don't take care of your shit it breaks.

...

You're going places kid.

...

Fuck. Fucking fuck fuck.
Now I'm gonna have to rip each and every one of my discs. I should have done it many years ago, but no time like the present i guess.
Although, ddrescue did not report any errors whatsoever for that particular disc.
I'd beat the shit out of my younger self.

Whatever you say bruh.

I've got PS1 and Mega-CD games that don't have ANYTHING like this on here.

You're full of shit and you're just trying to get people's anxiety up.

...

See

Also, type in "pin size hole in games" and you'll find multiple threads on the subject. You also have different anons in this thread who have the same issue, though it may not be disk rot and might be something else entirely.

Trips confirm. What kind of fucking living conditions are you degenerates in?

Fuck the ocean.

My original copy of Captain Commando for the Playstation has quite some scratches scratches but no holes and still works like a charm. What is it about old CDs that are way more sturdy and durable than modern disks?. And how the fuck is the PSX able to read shit with so many scratches?.

I'm more worried about the life cycle of the storage, though. Shit's gonna be expensive if I play it safe and buy new hard drives every few years, even with secondary backups.

Even on the internet, that shit is dying out fast.

Btw, check the pc98 site, check abandonware sites, and then check archive.org for pc-98 images. Also, some of the games like True Love were ported to windows, so some of them can be played without an emulator. Good luck. I got ~20 gigs of images myself, but I'm still worried about the ones I'm missing and most of them are in moonrune. Fuck me up.

And by images, I mean roms.

I am ready to embrace the sweet comfort of the death and this world would not be any worse than the loss of someone like me.

As I said earlier, I think the quality has been lost in the mass production. Still, those little dots really shouldn't do anything.

Shit man, you should try to upload them somewhere or get a torrent going. Not only beachside I want them, but because that's the safest bet when it comes to preserving your shit. It's why I upload rare porn I find to various boorus.

I've been moving my game collection to SD cards and hard drives, and I started using Everdrives and other similar things.
How does humidity affect bit rot? I've got a dehumidifier, should I store my games in a cupboard and have that running inside?

Not only because*

That was a fun autocorrect.

Setting up a torrent would be a pain with the internet I have currently, and the low amount of seeders would fuck it up for anyone interested. Which is another problem: there have only been a handful of threads that I have ever seen even mention PC-98, and god forbid you want to find people outside of imageboards or 2hu groups that even know what PC-98 is. If you want to make sure they don't vanish, then you're gonna have to work hard to shill them literally everywhere. I would upload gameplay myself, but youtube doesn't allow porn, which is the majority of PC98 games. It's all fucked, but let me at least get you started. I'm missing a few links from archived/share threads, but here's the bulk of em:

Awesome, I appreciate the help and links. Looks like I got some "work" to do today.

Anytime, brother. I just gotta get through the one or two games in my primary backlog, then I'll move onto PC-98 vidya. After a few of those, I'll start making generals for discussion and recommendations to ease people into this shit.

What are we going to do when we're all old and decrepit? Play walking simulators? Play those job sims that germany keeps pumping out?

>implying I'd want to live that long

I'm worried for you oldfags, but as far as medical tech is concerned, I'm in the clear and I'll definitely be able to continue to enjoy the shit that I've enjoyed for the past 20 years.

Judging by how shit gaming is getting we'd still be less casual than the average gamer by then.
I'm going to go for the games with builtin programming. Things like Space Engineers, where you can build a 2 wheeled vehicle then code an autobalancing script to make a motorbike.

I'm worried for you youngfags, who will never know the slumber of the just.

There's a pastebin in the OP for the share threads with torrents for a shitton of hentai, also poke around >>>/hgg/ and stuff.

>a bunch of electronic old men remembering Holla Forums

Next thing youre going to tell me is about my exploding chair

Don't forget to leave all of your mp3s and steam games in a cool, dry place to avoid rotational velocidensity degrading the quality of the files.

We can't all be so fortune to enter Valhalla.
Some are doomed to never die, because they never lived.

Nigger stop overreacting.

My dick

It's like you people don't actually read the thread.

I agree with you.

A typical mask ROM cartridge can last many decades in storage, and a chip with gold contacts will probably last at least a hundred years. Flash and EEPROM will eventually fade away if stored for years, but as long as you refresh them (i.e. start up the game and load/copy your saves every year or two) they should last quite a while.
