It's a big deal, but this isn't really that surprising. The new consoles aren't exactly flying off the shelves, and these products depend on systems being in family homes to make impulse sales.

While these products used to perform well in sales, it's hard to infer anything about the industry at large from them. They are basically electronic toys for a very different market than traditional games.

Here's the thing though: Most of the figures in there are second hand and the median price is about 2,50 €. A special golden Mickey Mouse you could get from the nearby chain electronics retailer for 20 was offered there for 7. Not joking here. The only thing they sell brand new there are Amiboos. The used Buylander and Infinity stuff dwarfs the Amiboo rack all the time I was there.

Skylander came first and it already happened to these. Nintendo is the player that came into the markete right before Lego.

Regardless, amiibo was an amusing idea at first. That went downhill fast, starting with Splatoon and it's "the green squid amiibo is only available if you preorder the game." and each amiibo had a specific game mode behind it with unique armor to unlock.

It was supposed to be about getting a figurine of a character you liked and being able to unlock bonus stuff in games with said character. They shitcanned that and have made it so that now a ton of amiibos don't even work right, you gotta preorder "game" to get a SPECIAL amiibo of the same fucking character.

Case and point: Kirby. Got the smash bros kirby? Too bad, you need the special new kirby for kirby on 3DS!

This, always wanted to have physical smash trophies, the fact that they were compatible with Smash was an extra, and no content was locked behind it, since everything the amiibo do with Smash is making an AI character.
Since then, it became DLC and useless amiibos. Nintendo should have keep the line on Smash characters only that worked in additional games and 3rd party should have done their own.

Alternatively, things like the Yarn Yoshi amiibo should had used the same Yoshi amiibo function. That way, you just had an alternative Yoshi amiibo that unlocked the same thing Yoshi amiibo did.

The memory card features of the toys was a good feature for the Wii U to have, especially with the system itself had on storing and transfering data.
