I've also noticed that Wal-Mart spent ALOT of money on re-building stores for no real reason. Everyone got their "Super Center" around the same time. In my small town they only occupied the old store for 8 years before building the new one. The new one doesn't really have much more floor space either. They also put it right next to a power plant and on land that used to be wilderness reserved for the local Girl scouts (it was "summer camp"). This allowed them to build the entire thing out of sight.
Every small town around me had the same thing happen and I think it was country wide. I understand them expanding with the boom at the tail end of the 90s but this was early 2000s after the bubble popped. Also, you'd think they would have slowly built these up instead of building them everywhere in a small amount of time. If you were concerned with profit you wouldn't plop one down every where. You'd build them slow and retrofit the basically brand new buildings you already owned.
