I don't understand how this spillway erosion in any way could cause a serious happening.

There are no significant dams where I live, so maybe I am just confused. It seems to me that the dam is structurally fine, and this spillway is the only problem. But the spill way is basically just a long cement shoot that water moves through from the lake to the river below. So this long cement shoot broke apart, and now the water is escaping and forming a parallel course of water down to the river below.

Don't get me wrong, by breaking out of the spillway, it's eroding the land next to it and fucking up shit immediately next to the spillway. But isn't that the only damage?

The water is still ultimately going where it needs to go, which is the river below. The mechanisms that control water flow through the spillway seem to be working fine, and the dam seems to be holding fine.

So if the dam doesn't need to be relieved of pressure, there is no problem. If the dam does need to be relieved of pressure, the mechanisms to do so are functioning, and the water is going where it needs to go. It's just the path the water takes is a little funky.

Obviously, it needs repair, but seems to be working fine so far as not failing goes.
