We come back in an hour to check up on them, because already 9 hours in they're our worst pair of students of the group. What did these guys do? they relocated their sleeping bags 5 feet to the left still on the rocks. Ok, now we have to literally point out to them the area they should start building their lean-to on and implore them to get started on the 10 hour late fire. Fire needed to melt the snow for water they have not been drinking..

Once the fire got going a little bit (another instructor had to basically help them get it going), it was one guy's job to stoke the fire while the other foraged for more fuel/timber.Only problem now is you have a guy who never broke a dry stick in his life, trying to swing an axe to cut a branch. I can't explain how many times I saw this guy almost cut his femoral artery.
