Star Trek thread

We haven't had a star trek thread in a while and now that the deluge of shitposting is over, now's a pretty good time.

Star Trek is pretty much the go-to popular example for what Future Space Communism will/might look like. Of course it's heavily idealized but as a conceptual jumping off point it's not bad.

>but it's not MY kind of leftism!
There are plenty of examples throughout the series of different cultural orientations and social structures, running the spectrum from authoritarian to libertarian, even within the Federation. Expecting there to be a single, uniform rule for these plethora of planets would be silly.

It's a voluntary organization that you're free to join or leave at any time (apparently) with a few exceptions. Compared to modern military standards its practically anarchism, especially when you consider the Kirk Corollary.

You're on a Kuala Lumpuran Daguerreotype Smoke Signal discussion community. It's already too late for you. Also science fiction has a long history of progressive thought and speculative fiction. Embrace it.

That's objectively wrong but I'm sure the kindly commissar will be happy to discuss it with you on the way to planet Gulag XII

Seems about right tbh

maybe one day they can make a positronic brain for you so that you'll finally be able to make an argument

Savage

hi, Tipper.

whats star trek?

What makes you say that, comrade? Which Trek is best Trek?

The future will be Fallout with the social attitudes of WH40K.
Calling it.

DS9 is actually the best. I will debate any of you nerds on this.

DS9 is the best Trek, TNG is Trek at its best.

Also I put off watching ENT until a few months ago because everyone says it's bad but boy are they wrong. It's better than VOY for sure. They have some really cool sci-fi concepts in ENT; "Dead Stop", "Cogenitor", "Similitude", and "Exile" are some of the ones that come to mind as just being well written, good additions to the genre.

As for DS9, it has the best characters/actors/funny episodes/plot line, so what other criteria do you really need?

An American sci-fi series about life in the 23-24th century, where Earth is part of an interstellar collective called the United Federation of Planets.

TNG, obviously.

I wish they would have done an episode where Worf learned about humanity's martial past. I picture him getting really into stories/history about the samurai, becoming a tremendous weeb, wearing a topknot, and insisting on being called "Worf-san."

this is a good idea and I want it now.

...

don't tell me you didn't like seeing him beat up and shat on in every episode, then. if you hate him, then you like that the show made him suffer. same reason why I like Harry Kim. He sucks, but it's funny when he gets beat up.

Okay, you got me.

It was really funny when he went through hell to keep the station from flying apart only for Sisqo to bitch at him at the end because his coffee was too hot.

Poor Harry

It was funny watching him deal with his shitty boss and harpy wife, but that doesn't mean that Obrien wasn't section chief of The B Team. Every time there was a problem I couldn't help thinking "If Geordi and Data were on the case they'd have this problem licked in a Ferengi minute."

I haven't had the chance to give ENT a decent look outside of when it was first airing, but I think people give it a bad rep because, like the majority of Trek series, it suffers from a rocky beginning. The thing that it doesn't have in common with the other shows is that it was cancelled right as the show began to figure itself out, which was really too bad and makes the lousy seasons stand out more.

Garak is best comrade.

Good taste friend.

This but don't forget how great it is to watch the universe shit on our resident ayncrap Quark.

So after watching a season of ds9, are the bajorans supposed to be palestineans?

Cuz I got a big IRA vibe from them as well. Kinda a dark vibe to the cardassians too.

Dprk

I've only seen TOS, what I enjoyed the most were the abysmal production values and how the crew overcomed that with smart scripts and commited performances.

How do the TOS movies and later series compare production wise? I'm not really into tv dramas so I will drop them if they become too melodramatic.

Watch Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home. The latter being the best Trek movie. :^)

Garak is such a good character. Even if someone hates DS9, I don't see how you can't love Plain, Simple Garak.

This is true. The first few episodes are weak just like all the others. I usually tell people to skip the first season of any Trek, because I want them to get the best impression of it possible.

I'm optimistic about the new Trek series, even though I kind of don't like the new movies. I'm hoping it will have some clever philosophical dilemmas, at the very least, since the movies do not. Thoughts?

Star Wars is better

I wouldn't even dare to hope.

Star Wars is for little kids.

Why: Everything I don't like is Fascist.

I don't know if there's a wew big enough

Star Wars is better

So… I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover up the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But most damning of all… I think I can live with it… And if I had to do it all over again… I would.

Sheev is the only good thing about Star Wars. No I don't just mean the prequels.

THANK YOU!

Does this whiny fuck not know what a military is?

Also,

Trips confirm

Bam! Hit the nail on the head. Star Trek is fun but it's a fantasy about Tech solving all our problems and space being filled with life and goodies.. It's not real.

kirk's wireless communicator was supertech in the 60s and now everyone carries a phone in their pocket that can instantly contact anyone on the planet for video communication and has practically unlimited access to the sum total of human information

kys pls tia

Nice toy,, but it didn't end injustice now did it. Probably actually adds to all the injustice n the world since the cell phone requires minerals mined in the third world and can be used to track you.

Tech will not save you from oppression.

Space is not the final frontier. It is an empty void and cannot serve as a safety valve for our "excess population".

are you sure you shouldn't be posting under a greenfag flag

TNG best Star Trek

I also liked the more subtle stuff they dropped.

>That blue skinned fellow.
Grandpa you can't just do that you can't just call a guy a blue skin in public like that come on

kek
Is that supposed to be the real Mark Twain?

Yeah, time travel shenanigans are involved.

Tech has certainly solved many of our problems before.

Liberals. Every time.

Getting really sick of these pop-culture videos too.

Buh-duhh I like the big boom lazors, becaus e they make the swooshy sounds - eeeeeeeee.

Does that say "lol what" in Ruskie?
I only started learning recently.

I'll post under whichever meaningless symbol that gets someone to listen to me.

Yeah tech really stopped Porkies domination of the planet cold didn't it.

Tech greatly increased our standard of living. In addition, I have no clue why you think tech must be misused as a general rule.

Enterprise is my favorite as well.
I just did a rewatch of the entire Television and movie treks.
I found Voyager to be better than expected/remembered and TNG to be god damn terrible most of the time.

Any leftist should enjoy Undiscovered Country as well.

[but fuck yeah Voyage Home]

If I had to choose between The Motion Picture and Star Trek 09 I prefer TMP

anyone got some places to watch episodes of the OG series for free?

got my B████crat friend into socialism via star trek

good stuff

StarTrek: Libertarian edition. AKA johnson shilling, utopism, and accidental critiques of capitalism.

I like how lolberts are literal utopians.

bump

I just started the TNG on Netflix and I just reached season 2. I've got a question. Why did they kill off Tasha?

Denise Crosby was unhappy with how little screentime and character development Yar was getting, and with the general cringiness of the first two seasons. So they wrote in a plot to kill off Yar.

DISNEY PURGE WHEN ?

Aww. I liked her.
