Dayum! Who's that cutie!?

The tough stronk security officer of Discovery.

A fracking toaster

Rekha Shanti Sharma

The were trying to reference BSG inside the shuttle with the shaky hand held camera bits, then the show made the full switchero to Resident Evil, followed by the The Phantom Menace.

How fucking dense are you people?

You're scaring me when you get mad at them.
;_;

I just meant they triggered BSG entering my mind before Tory even showed up, I didn't really even recognize her until you pointed it out though, she's been in like nothing since BSG.

You don't belong here.

>>>/reddit/

I was thinking "I know her from somewhere" for most of the episode. I honestly don't mind this show having a BSG feel. I loved that show until the very end. So, with this new series, I either get Star Trek or BSG. A win for me either way.

I watched the entirety of nuBSG during it's initial run but frankly, the ending is underwhelming enough that I haven't bothered revisiting it properly since, just a bit here and there when an episode is on tv.

Dehumanizing others is not Trek. Prison sentences are supposed to be a rehabilitation process, not slave labor like in STD.
I guess the Federation does not believe in paying a man a fair wage either. Fuck this grimdark shit.

YOU DON'T.

REPORTED for Ban Evasion

Stealing my catchphrase.
Reported for Jewry.

...

We are headed there anyway because the capitalist system morphed into corporatism and financialized everything. Now the disillusioned masses are looking for alternatives. Those alternatives are National Socialism or Communism. Everything Marx predicted has happened. The road to communism begins when markets and capitalism discredit themselves. Like right now with Obamacare.

top lel.

The series is clearly meant just to troll Star Trek fans.

lol @ Kike Cucklasa defending this.

3rd episode is more of the same.

This sounds like it has somehow gotten worse than last week.

If they really wanted to be like BSG then they should've hired a better director of photography. I can't stand the lighting on their sets (like those neon lights coming from everywhere, it doesn't go well with the dark grey sets), it makes everything "fake".

(me)
Shit, I uploaded the wrong file.

what did they mean by this?

Deep lore. And yes, the lighting looks like shit.

This picture makes me wish you could still legally beat women.

Wait until the show is cancelled in a few weeks, you'll see a Plinkett review like TFA where he'll shit on the trekkies instead of criticizing STD.

So how do they handle Federation prison? Anything short of the nicest Swedish prison will be universe breaking to me.

It should be universe breaking to everyone considering the rehabiliation facility for literally Hitlers in TOS.

I didn't think it was possible, but the show actually got worse.

Do not watch.

...

What is with this? If they're going to have colored people or minorities or whatever, why do they always resort to black women as the default? There's nothing creative or "diverse" about it.

With the exception of abos, niggers are the least human of the human sub-species but are familiar to burger audiences. Per actor they increase the diversity to content the most by far without freaking the audience out like an abo.

Limitus test. Black women the most vile and repugnant creatures to ever walk the Earth. If you can tolerate that you'll swallow all the gallons of pozz they throw at you.

...

Their children visiting Voyager would have made for a great seaon 7 episode.

You plebs are seriously watching this trash?

Lol

"A sad statistic which is the source of some tension between myself and Liutenant Stamets. But our more advanced sister ship, before she crashed was traveling back and forth from the Beta Quadrant, 90 light-years away, in 1.3 seconds."

Uh, 90 lightyears is 2-3 days at Warp 9.975, which is the max speed of Voyager. How is a 100 year old POS supposed to pull that without being ripped to shreds? IIRC the pre-refit Enterprise could only handle Warp 14 (around Warp 9.8 or 9.9 in TNG scale) for like 15 minutes tops. It would take a TNG era ship two weeks to go those 90LY at 9.9, how the fuck can a Pike-era POS go there in under 2 seconds?

Lorca explains it, magic mushrooms.

This

lol @ Reich Bigcoklasa living in your head rent free.

...

wtf is this shit?

Oh god…

According to the show writers, this visual is in "the moons of Andoria"

I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE

...

marx never paid a dime to a maid until her death, she was a slave in marx's house. He is the ultimate profiteur who never honored a money debt in his life and lived of the money of an entrepreneur who, himself, by marx's standards lived of proletarian's back. marx is the biggest hypocrite of the 19th century, his doctrine is a fraud only meant to accommodate his own idleness. And to top it all, communism killed more than fascism. Communism is just yet another color of dictatorship and you're a clown.

This show might even be decent if they gave me any characters I could like or care about. Even edgy as fuck Battlestar Galactica had some likable characters. Everyone in this show just seems like a dick.

...

The world is heading towards communism anyway due to technology. What happens when most of the population is jobless because of machines? It already happened in the agriculture sector, nobody noticed because every other industry employed the displaced farmers.
What is every think thank, at least 3/4 of the all governments in America, and at least 1/3 of corporate leadership. All those people can be fired easily but do not because they are "special". People always try to rent-seek. Marx does not deserve to be called out for that reason.
Pro-tip: The alt-right is just buttmad upper middle class white guys pissed that they are pushed to the back of the line for diversity. They would happily keep the corruption and system going if it was all white.

Pretty much yeah. I like being white. I like white society. I'd like it to continue existing.

YOU CAME FOR THE SCIENCE BUT STAYED FOR THE CAPESHIT

I get the feeling this show wants to pick up or adapt the Klingon cold war point from Star Trek Into Darkness but doesn't know where it wants to go. I don't even know what timeline it wants to be set in.

Supporting people barely able to survive by themselves is not very natural. What you call social progress is just a war by the average against the exceptional. I don't want to live on a world full of average drones stunned on the vodka of the future and you should wait before claiming this world is unfair until you fully experienced communism.

Nice bait unless you are stupid enough to believe what you wrote.
I do not even know how where to begin to describe all the problems with your statement. Elite science and engineering caused all the problems you cry about. Without technology people would be mostly subsistence farming. Quit crying.
Most work is not satisfying and is mentally dull. We can't all be CEOs and since elites like their hierarchies, someone will have to be on the bottom cleaning toilets.
Modern civilization is not natural. Get used to it.

Why is technology going to abolish marriage and parenthood or the concept of personal property?

The promise of technology is post-scarcity. That isn’t communism; the point isn’t an equal share because it doesn’t matter.

Why is there an access hatch on the roof of a hanger? How are her legs alright after that fall? Why is she quoting children's books?

Yeah and why a hatch on the top of the shuttle?

Really? They said the same thing during the Industrial Revolution of the machines taking their jobs and they got new ones.

You mean low paid, low productivity service sector jobs? That is 3rd world economics.

Liberals, user.

This here. The only character I almost sort of like.

So what you're saying is people don't hate paying too high of taxes as much as having the refuse of the third world dumped on their doorstep? So insightful

It was that or Harry Potter.

I was hoping this episode would improve the show after the disaster that was the two-part pilot, but if anything it went further downhill.

Also this might just be my autism but this trope always annoys me:

Gay Officer's background is actually interesting.

I didn't get this, why a breath test ID and not a retinal scan or even a finger print one?

Oh I forgot the best part:

Because how else would our MC beat it? Not that her beating it led the plot anywhere, the Captain just spilled the beans before she did anything with the information anyway.

Jobs will still exist. Technology has never eliminated work. Machines will never be more durable and efficient than humans.

Millions of people still work in agriculture. They employ everybody from farmers and fruit pickers, to scientists, research and development, database managers, etc. My mother works for a large agricultural company and her office building is huge with thousands of people working in it. How are machines going to stop that?

Your sci-fi robots will never be a reality. Just like people who lived 50 years ago never got to see their precious flying cars, because it will never exist.

Are you fucking serious? Machines will only improve, while humans stay the same. Some would say that humans actually get worse due to dysgenics (intelligent people breeding less). Given enough times, machines will render humans obsolete.

I'd fuck her

Humans repair themselves which do lower operating costs a bit, plus the whole abstract thought thing

Given enough time AI will at the very least equal, and most likely significantly surpass human intelligence, so abstract thought is just a poor argument.

As for self-repair, that only works for minor scrapes, and guess what - minor scrapes don't really affect titanium surfaces like they do flesh and blood. As a human, you take 20 years before you can get a job and then you can only work for another 40. A robot can work from the day its born until forever. You need a living wage and sleep, the robot works non-stop and is happy to do it for free. So much for operating costs.

Machine learning is good enough that paralegals will start losing their jobs. These are semi-skilled positions that many people do. Radiologists are going to start losing their jobs in the next decade due to machine learning. This is a real problem now. Skilled, well paying jobs are going away. We all can't be bartenders. The agriculture sector also suffers from monopolies and needs to be broken up. Also, from mass 3rd world immigration. If we ever ethnically cleanse this country, robots will be put to work in the fields because farmers will all the sudden cry "muh costs!". The economy is anti-human and the 1% have decided to let the rest of us starve than share in the wealth the robots produce. The 1% did not invent the machines either, they just control the stocks and central bank.

In the far future where AI is as smart as humans things will be so radically different we can't really predict what society will be like then.

Machines suffer wear and tear around any moving part. Lubricant helps but doesn't completely solve the problem that moving metal against metal wears both pieces down. It's this sort of repetitive stress that humans are more resilient against.

Well this is where the point of discussion truly lies. How fast will technology advance?

Well based on Moore's Law it's likely to be human level within our lifetimes, and will quickly be significantly beyond human level because of the exponential progress it entails.

People who think otherwise usually rely on the fact that Moore's Law isn't totally hard and fast, or that there might be some unforeseen limit to our ability to progress past a certain point.

The fact that you can mass produce robots who will work at least 4x as fast as humans (can work 24 rather than 8 hours a day, don't need weekends of coffee breaks) more than makes up for the occasional malfunction, which I'm certain is more likely in humans anyway (full-time working population being a tiny subset of the actual population, after all).

Blacks are actually only 13% of the population in the US

Yeah but what about children, students, retirees, etc? Robots can just be transmitted all they need to know from day 1.

According to google, there are 323 million people in the US but only 127 million working full-time. And full-time work is still less than a quarter of what a robot which is equally efficient to a human but doesn't require off-days or sleep can produce.

I was trying to make a joke, user

If you're going to namedrop shit just to feel smart at least read the wikipedia article for it.
Or better yet, don't do it.

(this is your containment thread)

Nobody knows if Moore's Law is plateauing. Intel is a monopoly and that could be stalling progress for now. Research is also being done on finding a new material for cpu's to make them even smaller. For all we know the elite dole out the technology slowly to extract maximum shekels and have to replacement for silicon waiting in a lab somewhere.

I literally said in the post you're quoting that there may be hard limits to Moore's Law and that it's not hard and fast anyway. In any case, it's pretty much inevitable, and we're just questioning the number of years at this point.

It is. Jewtel is not a monopoly, either. New materials won't work, we need to change the whole nature of transistors (or you'd end up with layers less than an atom thick, which is impossible).
The fact that it's slowing down (still going, but the plateau is already making itself felt) is known.

You covered your ass but then went on to talk as if it was a hard truth. Also, again, it applies to hardware. Strong AI is a math problem, not a computer problem. Having transistors to run it doesn't mean shit. Fuck, we could probably run some strong AI with current consumer computers without noticing significant delay, probably.

Jewtel is a monopoly.

If you think she's hot wait till you see Michael's roomie.

Tits are bigger than beachballs, and they're all natural, I can tell by that lovely droop.

How do sparkly spores makes you travel really fast through space?

Though still technically harder than Star Wars, Star Trek is not new to BS science either, but this is jumping the shark.

They starve. If you think rich people who own killer robots are going to give poor people free money, you're an idiot.

Or the rich will turn the poor into killer "robots".

The hackers turning the rich's killer robots into the poor's killer robots. They probably leave the factory password.

Knowing the elite the programming is outsourced to pajeets.

Please tell me this is parody

...

And they really said that it plays in the main universe?

I think the magic mushrooms are used like nitrous oxide in a car, for a big speed boost. Some where on Discovery is some crewmen grinding up mushrooms and injecting them into the warp nacelles.

So Skynet will set up death camps for toilets rather than people?

That was just me using a dirty warp speed calculator; past Warp 9 on the TNG scale there's a certain degree of accuracy that has to be sacrificed since speeds between 9 and 10 are not the most accurately measured. However we do know that Voyager was not traveling at Warp 9+ the whole time; it was going to travel between Warp 7.7 and Warp 8.1 starting out (calculating 70-80k LY from Earth and a 75 year trip time). Even so, Warp 8 TNG is a high speed and has an official speed of 1024c (or ly/yr). We also know that Warp 8 TOS is half that, 512c. Now 512c is a very high and overall non-sustainable speed for a pre-refit Enterprise-type ship. TOS Warp 9 (729c) was possible but extremely dangerous; TOS Warp 13 (2197c) was something that would cause the ship to get torn apart in under half an hour.

90 lightyears in 1.3 seconds is 2,184,756,923c. This is quite clearly an insane speed not only by the standards of nearly any era of Trek except perhaps in the 29th Century or the prehistoric Iconian gateway stuff, but also Star Wars, and most any other sci-fi program except Doctor Who since ships at that speed could out-stroll anything short of a mobile time machine. Going from one end of the galaxy to the other would take 7 minutes, 10.2 hours to the nearest galaxy. Regardless of the magic mushrooms that power the effect, this is essentially near-infinite speed and any particular Star Trek ship should basically explode into disorganized atomic matter with that kind of acceleration. Especially ships of the era this is supposed to be set in.

It's obvious the technology will fail to become a new means of transportation, most likely due to being unable to iron out the problems with the system.

I wonder if they'll use the equivalent of the plot that was abandoned on Mass Effect (the one about the mass effect slowly destroying the universe or something like that).

You’ve already accepted the faster-than-light bullshit, so there’s really no reason why the writers can’t just make shit up.

Already happened:
memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Force_of_Nature_(episode)

My college dorm sounded these alarms to warn incoming freshman if their roommate's had the wrong race.

Discovery is obviously a Section 31 ship, not a Starfleet ship; on that note, is the CIA allowed to commandeer a Navy ship? They're both part of the DOD.

I don’t think the CIA is part of the DoD.

t. delusional transhumanist

It is section 31, they are probably posing as a Starfleet ship if your theory is correct.

...

I don't understand that screencap

It’s mr. Las Vegas Highscore.

Yeah, but it seems like there's something suspicious being implied by the user posting them if that makes any sense.

I like the idea of FALC, too, but I think it's far from inevitable. Look at a socioeconomic observation dating from the appearance of efficiency-multiplying "automation" such as steam engines, Jevons' Paradox:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons'_Paradox

Productivity vastly outstripped consumption centuries ago, during the early days of the industrial revolution when productivity exploded by several hundred percent in a single generation, while living standards rose little or not at all until labor agitation tore a pittance of this newfound bounty from the talons of its robber barons. As productivity continued to swell yet higher and higher above any gains won by the common weal from the 1700s clear to now, technology's inability to alter anything as simple as working hours by itself has not changed, and there is no reason to believe it ever will:
epi.org/publication/the-zombie-robot-argument-lurches-on-there-is-no-evidence-that-automation-leads-to-joblessness-or-inequality/

If we want FALC, or even just a bit more leisure, technology will give us merely the opportunity, only through shifting culture in regard to expectations about work will we be able to seize the rewards that have awaited us.

Robots v humans has nothing, or at least very little, to do with transhumanism. And I'm not in favour of replacing humans with robots you dolt, I'm just saying it's inevitable given enough time.

I hate this fucker. If you've ever worked with someone like this you either punched him, or smiled when somebody else finally did.

The Doug Jones character is the only one that feels like he fits in a Star Trek.

Captain Lorca is obviously the typical evil Admiral character Star Trek always does and the rest of the crew are just jerkasses.

Even though I understand plot magic like FTL is completely at the whims of the author, consistency still improves the coherence of a story. And suspension of disbelief has limits even with magic, especially if it's magic pretending to be science.

How exactly is that inevitable? Robots can't think and probably never will.

Learn to into how storytelling works, user.

...

I agree, we'll all starve to death by 2100.

The left has been slowly working on queering up farming. They identified farming as one of the last bastions of white heterosexual "manliness" and are working on destroying it.
netnebraska.org/article/news/1082581/transgender-nebraska-farmer-small-town-support-has-been-quite-good
We probably will be starving because Xir won't sell us food unless we use Xir's proper pronouns.

Very happy The Orville is TNG meets Galaxy Quest; it has given me comfort in the wake of ST:D

STD has replicators. What other TNG technology do they have in STD?

Warp capable shuttles (new tech in TNG/DS9),
Bridge holograms (introduced or reintroduced in DS9 depending on your opinion),
Star ships capable of going in an out of atmospheres (generally not lore acceptable for the era, this is what shuttle craft were for),
The ability for visual sensors to see footprints through a sandstorm when normal ships sensors don't work,
Klingons with cloaking tech (STD
2256, Klingons don't get cloaks until 2268 TOS).

I just don't understand why they prefer to lie to fans instead of just saying "hey, this is alt/Kelvin trek". That and why they had to completely rewrite the Klingons when they're probably the most flushed out cultures in the entire franchise, why ruin them and why not flush out a different species like Andorians?

I actually like gardening, animal husbandry, farmer's markets, and all that, but 99% of farmers now are just cucks for ADM pumping out rape oil and HFC for plastic garbage food that nobody enjoys eating enough to care about where it comes from, and I won't miss them one bit when they're completely obsoleted.

Legal dispute, the two halves of Paramount are too cheapass to just pay each other the licensing fees needed to make a real Star Trek anything:
hooktube.com/watch?v=3I3y3_QmBsQ
hooktube.com/watch?v=tQcLLfzzKWA
Because none of them (or their intended target audience) are Trekkies, so they think the only races are Klingons, Vulcans, and Romulans.

They did that in ENT in the episode Storm Front Part II. I won't hold that against STD since ENT did it first.

Jevons' paradox, as well as TRPF don't hold true when you examine all markets. Increased productivity and entrepreneurship allow for a rate of capital growth through reinvestment in new industries that outpaces consumption and plateaued profits in older industries. I know commies like think that the only "meaningful" production is either agriculture or industrial, but these now represent only a fraction of economic activity. People go to work in newer industries where capital accumulation in r&d have not yet allowed for automation. Profit maximization occurs on the margin. Whether it be through material conditions or cultural agitation, communism of any sort is never an inevitability.

Let them have their fun roasting it. It's already dead.
>>>/startrek/120

Enjoy your soon-to-be dead board

I guess we'll see, won't we?

Are they specifically stated to be tng style energy to matter replicators, or just chemical based "3d printers" that make food? Because even tos had those

Given enough time, they will be able to perform at least as well as the smartest humans, and probably even better than that. There's no reason to think that we can't invent what nature has invented given enough time.

Yeah but the NX-01 was a small ship.

WTF is going on here? Diversity is literally shilling this hard for diversity.

starfleet isn't supposed to be this bitchy

Another clip of this character, notices how he uses the term "lurker" before and after some computer code is shown. Google the computer code shown, takes you to Laurelai's github for stuxnet source.

Both supergay.

It was kind of vague. Something like this
and Sheniqua got herself new clothing after that.

STD is basically a rehash of Into Darkness.

The Discovery is that evil monster ship.

Captain Lorca is Admiral Robocop.

The negress is Benedict Kahn.

etc.

what the flying fuck

it's funny the only time tech stuff gets taken seriously on tv is when they get advice from deranged trannies

you can't make this stuff up

The cliff hanger will be that Discovery is a section 31 ship.

Why is she wearing the dirty dull yellow jumpsuit?

Inmates are typically dressed in highly visible clothing to make hiding more difficult.

If she is a inmate then why is she in a nice room with the smiling lady that wear the blue uniform? She didn't look like a brutal prison guard to me.

That's already how prison cells are in Sweden, and this is Star Trek.

Wouldn't that just encourage the people to commit the crimes in order to get in to a nice room with the smiling ladies?

You might be onto something. Maybe you should check the statistics of Swedish crime and incarceration rates.

I am certain that the statistics of Swedish crimes is high due to the numerous uneducated migrants but hey let's not talk about that because it's unrelated to this thread.

It is stupid that the government in star trek thought it is a good idea to treat the inmates humanely. Breen must be laughing at them for being flowery to the criminals.

The inmates in Fed are treated well. I wonder how the victims feel about the treatment toward the inmates?

Rehabilitative treatment of prisoners demonstrably decrease the amount of recidivism even among high melanin people. Significantly more than longer sentences or poor treatment during the time in prison. Only thing that decreases recidivism more is multiple limb maiming or capital punishment, but those have other issues, such as significantly more violent resistance to capture.

Only major exception is violent multiple time reoffenders, which have very small chance of not reoffending quickly after release regardless of the circumstances in prison.

Getting revenge rarely increases happiness or helps overcoming trauma.

They suck it up or get shipped out to a remote colony bordering an expansionist authoritarian regime and are then promptly forgotten about.
