Aside of the low quality Holla Forums mentality, the show had a lot of potential to be a lot of things, to be fun, to be interesting, to build something out of a cool premise of 1 bot and 10 girls incest, obviously:^) but it ultimately failed it all when instead of looking at the sister's lives with his brother it became "MC and nigger adventures". Clyde have more episodes than all the sisters together, holy hell.
The show still have it's moments, some Luan is actually the most entertaining character when she is not just being annoying but actually playing pranks, Ronnie Ann was cool, the parents are relatable and fun. The homos are inexcusable, though, but it's ironic since it might be the reason why Clyde it's such an annoying idiot, as for the sister being a lesbian, it was really well played, it took me by surprise when I saw the episode.

Am I just getting too old for cartoons? I enjoy The Amazing World of Gumball but that is literally the only kids show I have any emotional response to anymore.

Not really. For me, it's cartoons that actually take up 30 minutes, and isn't just plain random comedy. Everything seems to be mainly focusing on the 15 minute format which has a completely different flow than what a 30 minute one does. Adult cartoons aren't just making sex jokes leisurely.

I have to turn to anime to get anything close to what I want anymore because there just seems to be a lack of variety in cartoons these days in the US. Most new cartoons that try to mimic the old ways don't last that long, whether they are good or bad. It just seems like this is the type of cartoon that people want nowadays and I'm left with maybe just 5 cartoons I'll follow in hopes they're different from the pact and actually good.

What's the appeal of Gumball?

I'm not that guy and I haven't paid attention to Gumball since season 2, but it had good visual comedy mixed with snappy writing and the occasional gut punch (particularly the episode where Gumball and Darwin walk down main street while "invisible" by pretending to be panhandlers, and the audience is show shots of dozens of secondary characters awkwardly looking the other way and pretending not to notice them).

The 11-minute format really didn't help, though. Many of the season 2 episodes had deliberate anticlimaxes because they had 11 minutes of fast-paced comedy and yelling but couldn't spare a minute for a proper denouement. They redesigned a few characters and changed some voice actors, too, which I didn't appreciate.

From the clips I've seen on tumblr art blogs and such, Gumball is moving more towards referential humour and memes rather than the stuff from the first season which had its inspirations but still worked by itself. Embed related is an obvious homage to Hong Kong action movies, but it has enough visual gags to work on its own for people who don't know much about that genre. I don't tend to follow the production side of many series, so I don't know if its ratings have changed significantly - either way, I estimate the show will have no more than one or one and a half seasons left if it can't recapture some of the first season's magic.

It pisses me off because the family is dysfunctional, and it attempts to play on "feels" like every "adult" cartoon on TV. It ends up being extremely cringey.

Don't forget that it has no politics. Till this day they didn't make a DRUMPF strawman or a "misunderstood sandnigger" character or a trannyfaggot.

I'll admit I don't watch most "adult" cartoons like Archer and Rick & Memey, or even Aqua Teen Hunger Force or The Venture Bros (those two are some of the better ones, right?), but I never had the impression those cartoons tried to be anything but cynical and sarcastic.

Did you pay attention to the show at all? Brock was broken from the beginning. The entire show is about failure. The entire point of Brock was to show a guy who appeared to be heroic badass was actually a shitty deranged psychopath who vicious assaulted anyone who so much as touched him too hard.
