Rural poverty only became associated with the South only after the civil war. Prior to the war, Southerners including the non slave owning common folk had a much higher standard of living than common Northerners.

I'm unsure if it applies to antebellum period, but in the pre-revolutionary era colonists in the North had longer lives. If it weren't for political climate I'd be far north because north European stock isn't meant to live this close to the equator. Too far south and you've got skin cancer and it's just too hot.
