In an ideal world, instead of universal basic income or socdem gibs me dats (and I have been a strong proponent for ubi), everyone who wants to work would be guaranteed work and make a livable income off it. Except for the disabled and the retired. They would just get disability and social security respectively. If everyone able shared the labour, we would be working fewer hours than we do now.
Instead we have a system where 35-40% of people of working age don't work. And you know what this creates? Resentment from the people who work towards the people who don't. For eg. My dad who is retired resents the fact that I'm chronically unemployed and mooch off him. But where are the fucking jobs? And why do they have to pay so little?
We need socialism or at least a socdem ENFORCED 30 hour work week under capitalism at the very least. And an ENFORCED livable minimum wage. Because capitalism by nature is designed to lead to mass unemployment and it will collapse eventually.
I get shunned a lot for being unemployed. But if you look at the labour statistics for men in their mid-late twenties and even early-mid 30s, there are a ton of young men who are not employed who aren't counted in the unemployment statistics. Employers don't want us. And if by some miracle they offer us a job, they pay us poorly for it.
