Apart from its stalinistic approaches to freedom of thought, information and speech and its lack of working towards a more efficient, more worker controlled mode of production, its not the worst place in the world, and it certainly did very very well for its situation.

Not perfect but certainly a better example of socialism than the USSR et al.

They're pretty much the only communist country left (North Korea crossed over into neo-feudalism long ago), so they could just as well try something new. Such as letting the workers actually control the means of production, for a change.

Given its situation it's honestly done okay. Should have lightened up on the civil liberty; given that the US is so extremely hamfisted in its diplomatic approaches, I doubt this would have been risky in any significant way. Fidel did apologize for the racial and sexual attitudes of the past, though, to be fair.

It amuses me to no end how they offered relief after Katrina and the US had to turn it down for PR reasons.
