Why didn't they send Dr. Manhattan to the Soviet Union and blow it the fuck up in the first place? You can't launch a nuclear counter strike when your capitol has been eradicated by a god on earth.

All timelines in which Osterman attempts to eradicate the soviet union ended with the complete obliteration of the entire earth. There were hundreds of fail safe's and dead man's hands that the Soviet Union had put in place in fear of Manhattan. Manhattan would spend time and time again mapping his plans in the far future, and these weren't his predictions they were certain visions, and each one ended in catastrophe. It was Manhattan that told Ozy that he needs him to figure something out, and at this point Manhattan could no longer see the future (certainly because ozy had the time traveling particles that clouded his vision) and assumed something that was no within his control was going to happen.

The moment they had learned Moscow was vaporized, the soviets likely would have fired the nuke anyways to spite the Americans and not even Dr. Manhattan would have been able to stop them.

You can if you have several contingencies in place designed to make that exact scenario very untenable for the aggressor, Manhattan or not.

What exactly is the limits of Manhattan's powers?

because nobody wanted to find out what would happen if he said, "No".

He's still very human despite his stoicism. We're talking about a man who spontaneously transported an entire studio of people in anger when he was ambushed with unanticipated questions during an interview. There's no guarantee that he'd be in the state of mind necessary to perfectly shield the US against a full-scale retaliatory strike from the USSR.

Unknown, it's hard to tell if he's just a steroided molecule man or maybe a reality warper. Either way, the setting for Watchmen leaves conclusively that there is for certain nothing that anyone can do to kill him or stop him. Even Ozymandias who's touted as so smart we wouldn't be able to handle a second of his genius was only able to temporarily distort him and blind him. It's gonna be fun to see him interact more directly with the DC universe, in particular that his abilities have been upgraded or his role has been upgraded significantly

Me am not on Bizzaro now?

Even in real life both sides were as likely to launch if they didn't get a regular "everything is fine" signal from the top. Britain's nuclear subs are authorised to fire if they can't get BBC Radio 4, for instance.

Because plot. There really is no decent reason for someone with his powerset not to do so other than the "he's mentally retarded" angle.

But he would have. The guy can teleport limitless distance and act within fractions of a second inconceivable to humans. He'd also know when the nukes fire due to his perception of time and events, so he could very easily stop every nuke ever launched from anywhere on the Earth at any time.

Geoff Johns needs to be fired, with a guarantee that he will never be hired by DC ever again.

Or Marvel, for that matter. They have enough meddling faggots.

He said yes to Vietnam

I never got what all the rage was about regarding Watchmen-in-DC. Is Johns ruining Manhatten's character, is it a behinds the scene thing, or what?

He can only perceive his own future, and it's said in the story that nuclear holocaust in the future can disrupt his precognition by sending tachyons backwards or something.
They also explicitly say the amount of nukes Jon would be able to stop, and that the amount that get through would still be enough to kill everyone.

Easier task, that's all.
Also that was early on in his "career", when he was allowing people to push him around and tell him what to do.

Some people just don't like the idea of dragging Watchmen into DC's multiverse bullshit and using it as some edgy metatextual excuse as to why the New 52 happened.

It's and open and shut story in most cases, not a living document of work. A lot of people feel Watchmen's characters should have a beginning middle and end, kind like how Marvel felt about Miracleman.

It's been a while, but doesn't he state that the amount of nukes would likely be to much for him to actually stop even with full power?

A better question is why he didn't just fiddle all the warheads in their silos so they wouldn't go off? Nuclear weapons are extremely complicated, have very finite shelf lives, and it's pretty tricky to know if they're going to go boom just by inspecting them (all those nuclear tests weren't just the generals swinging their dicks around). Even if he took his time and sabotaged them one at a time I don't see how anyone could have known since the story takes place after the signing of the test ban treaty.

They say that but everything he proceeds to do demonstrates it to be bullshit. With the guy able to teleport an entire room of people when upset and able to travel to new locations almost instantaneously, there's no reason he couldn't just put the nukes somewhere else.
In fact that new Manhattan makes even less sense for this shit since now he can erase history, so he could just erase the part of history where the nukes actually hit.

Where have I heard this before

Let's be real here, Moore wanted to keep the 80's fear of being nuked at the height of the cold war without giving up Manhattan, so he never really made up a good explanation as to why Manhattan never fucking destroyed Russia in 15 minutes, because he could unless the Russians could manipulate particles the way Ozymandias could to block his powers but that would mean his god like powers would be gone thus ruining Moore's idea of the character.
Can't have that now can we?
Questions like these go over at Reddit because they're almost always just poor writing by the hack frauds that wrote them truing to defend them this hard is just pathetic.

You know what I'd say Manhattan is very similar to King Crimson. Both have powers just nebulous enough that the writers can pretty much pull any shit they want from their ass and have the fans defend it because they don't know what the fuck is going on, but they assume other people do.

Dude can vaporize shit with a thought, I'm pretty sure vaporizing a few thousand nukes midflight would not be that difficult.

Why would he? Did America destroy the Russians in 1945, even though America had the nuclear bomb and the Russians didn't? Not to mention the whole point of the story is that Russian foreign policy is far less aggressive than it was/is in our world because the Russians are scared shitless of Dr Manhattan. Then he goes away which means the Americans have got nothing to retaliate with when the Russians start invading Afghanistan and then Pakistan.

Because he didnt want to fight against Commisar Crimea

Technically they still could, superiority in numbers and in tanks. Well Europe invasion wise.

That wasn't the question

Because Watchment are not interesting characters outside of the story they were put in. Night Owl and the rest of them are essentially parodies of other characters and they aren't interesting on their own. Plus their "universe" isn't unique, either. If they had merged with Judge Dredd or some other line with established and long-running mythos then maybe but Watchmen is more or less an reinterpretation of mainstream comics so… merging them with mainstream comics doesn't sound interesting.

And I mean you can't tell that many stories with Dr. Manhattan. We've already got enough godlike entities in all these fucking comics universes.
