I can back up your stories about changes to the trans community, and I'd like to know if we can trace it back to something specific happening in academia at the time, or what.

In my case, I "came out" around…2000ish? And for a couple of years, the forums I joined (I live in a conservative area, I didn't even try for anything face-to-face) were super small and pretty homogenous in the sense that even people from really different backgrounds had the same experiences and shit. It was very supportive and friendly, almost familial.

Then around…could be as early as 2003, we started to see this huge upswing in purple-haired "genderqueer" kids (I guess that's "non-binary" now) and they basically just totally took over. (It might have happened earlier online than in person, I'm guessing.) What used to be forums where people discussed surgery, hormones, changing your name, telling your family, etc., just became this neurotic obsession over, I guess, a proto version of the gender theory that's all over Tumblr now.

A bunch of us tried to "flee" to new forums that we created for "real" trannies, where we could discuss the old stuff, and the purple hairs followed us there whining that we weren't "inclusive" enough. There was also complaints about our being TOO identified with a "normal" gender and such, too "patriarchal," etc. etc.

Eventually, a lot of people got so frustrated that they just dropped out completely, stopped having anything to do with other trans people because they had to sift through so much crap. Who knows how many people that was?

What I have always wondered about is: where the fuck did all the "non-binary" kids come from? The influx was pretty fast, it took one forum that only had a couple hundred members to several thousand within a couple of years.
