I like this series, but it annoys me that the only way people can think of for MJ to be "equal" to Peter is to give her superpowers. It'd be a lot cooler to me if she acted as tech support in a van nearby, and if their daughter gets hurt she just rushes in with a fucking gun

Yeah I feel that the Superman comics handle Lois in the "wife of superhero" role better than Mary Jane.

People wanted the Spider-Marriage back, so Marvel brought it back in a way that both fans and non-fans of the marriage would be happy. Seems like a perfectly logical thing to do, IMO.

Lois Lane doesn't need superpowers, though, half of her appeal to the feminist brigade that is her fanbase is that she's a normal career woman who gets to bitch out Superman without suffering the consequences for her shitty behavior.

MJ was meant to be part of Peter Parker's supporting cast, not part of Spiderman's teamup brigade. She doesn't work in the latter, unlike some of his other supporting cast.

There. Sounds enjoyable enough to me. It reminds me how they turned the original story of a Girl that never gave up to find her young (Male) friend and traveled all across the world to save him, into frozen.

Powers don't necessarily make for a more enjoyable character. I wouldn't mind MJ becoming a Black Belt, learning tips and tricks, and being awesome support. Heck maybe she grabs a power gauntlet from a bad guy and uses it when appropriate.

It makes sense for their daughter to be involved since she has superpowers. I don't think Peter could really bring himself to stop her, since she has the power therefore the responsibility. There's no way he didn't teach her that, and there's no way he would argue against it if she used that line. But MJ also being involved as another Spider-powered hero makes it a lot dumber. I would seriously expect MJ to make Peter agree that if their daughter was truly about to die, then the no-kill rule is off the table and she's busting in with mustard gas and an automatic rifle. She just seems like that type of mom. Making her be the exact same hero as Peter and their daughter really cheapens the character as a whole. She'd be better even if she was just the stay at home wife who was unconditionally supportive because she realizes how important crime fighting is to their family.

I actually got interested in this until I heard MJ and the daughter were fighting crime too

The mesh up has potential. But they have to be willing to expose MJ as a far more inexperienced spider hero instead of being a near equal. That whole mole manbarc was fantastic. Even better at the end with the splash page of the family crashed out on the family couch. Neither family member was taking complete focus of the story and was far more a family outing from which is what they NEED to embrace to keep it from being a Super Dad clone.

The problem with having MJ fight crime at all is that she just doesn't have the background for it to come off as anything but forced and derivative. It just seems like a crutch to avoid treading the same ground as Spider-Girl.

I'm sorry MJ and characters in general….But not everybody can be the main character. Spider Family is a whole lot weaker then Spiderman as a Story. Fantastic 4 is a great family story. Spiderman is Peter Parkers story.

MJ just can't be built up into the main cast without loosing something about her. It's like the equivalent of Character Communism. Because everybody has to be special and MC worthy nobody is.
