So is this show actually culture jamming or is it more liberal bullshit fairy tales based on anonamoose?

It's actually pretty class conscious to be honest. There's even a movie in the series that's called "The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie".
It's relatively class-conscious but in a way that is sometimes cringey because, yeah, it gives all the credit to le edgy anonymous-type hackers.
They restrain themselves from making concrete statements about the system, it's all pretty vague.
The evil guys are literally called "Evilcorp" (although you never know if that's just what the protagonists call them) and it's giving you the vibe that only crony capitalism is bad. I feel like AnCaps could like this show as well. That being said, it does have some class conscious scenes in it, but the second season bores me to death so far, it lost a lot of punch after season one.
Obviously it's extremely heavy-handed in its themes all the while ironically skirting around anything truly radical. I do think it could be useful that its portraying vaguely leftist ideas but it does need to go further (much like V for vendetta which Mr Robot somewhat steals some ideas from).
Aside from the themes I do appreciate how it handles hacking and technology. It's simplified but there's plenty of nods that technically inclined people will notice, as well as some subtler references to chan culture in particular.
I dunno about that. I feel like, considering how many industry's evilcorp is involved in, its a stand in for capitalist industry as a total. Not to mention, that scene with the black guy running the black market site seems to be a subtle jab at ancaps, considering he just let the freemarket decide what was put on there.
I've only watched season one, but more than anything it felt like an attempt to synthesize Fight Club, American Psycho and Hackers into one le ebbig TV-series. It doesn't fall flat on it's face, but I'm never able to shake the feeling I'm watching some sort of parody when they constantly refer to the company as Evil Corp. The characters that made the previously mentioned movies fresh have long since become toothless stereotypes and so the series becomes more reverberation of the same ideas people have heard thousand of times before, familiar and easy to digest, not requiring or inspiring to reflection on society.
More than anything it enforces the idea that radical action can only be the result of severe mental disorders and requires superhuman intellect to be successful.
But it's not without redeeming qualities, it does market normies as sheeple and the hacker culture as cool. It potentialy could bring more people in to internet counter culture where they have some chance of being radicalized.
3/10 mildly subversive.
I suppose it feels better to me since I haven't watched those films, but think its a little more subversive than that considering just how well it displays the absurdities of capitalism, especially in the backstory with his dad and
What's "culture jamming"? Not even joking I don't know what it is and I don't want to wiki it and read an overly verbose explanation.
Yeah? Maybe I'm just to old for the show. I'd be interested to know if you've seen any change in people you know who have watched the show. Only people I know who have seen it were already leftist.
Could be I'm to pessimistic.
My dad who's more of a socdem/liberal really likes it, but I don't think it's changed him much.
I thought that…
But one time I was on the way home from work and I turned on the radio for traffic info. After the traffic the radio had a guest (I'm pretty sure it was npr). It was the creator of Mr robot. I was interested and I assumed this nigga was class conscious. But no. The conversation went like this:
I'll see if I can find the interview on npr website
This is by far one of the most cringeworthy scenes in television btw
youtube.com
as I typed this, youtube automatically sent me to a scene where he rants about religion that is also cringeworthy as fuck.
This isn't a good show and I didn't finish watching season 1, but I've sat through enough to feel that the social commentary in it is really trite and simplistic, the politics of it is very bad and elementary, and that it's mostly aimed at precocious teenagers than anyone else.
If this is everyone's idea of "class consciousness" then wew, we have a long way to go.
well sure, that is a part of his character, but that doesn't mean that the show itself is not critiquing capitalism. It's pretty clear that he is a sort of anoonymouse/occupy wall street anti-corporation progressive.
I get the feeling it was intentionally cringy, he was really high in that scene and he did apologize for it later.
Yeah, probably teenagers and will be most attracted to this kind of heavy handed rhetoric. Old soc dems already know the world is a fuck.
In the first episode he says explicitly that he's brainwashed himself into seeing it instead of their real logo. It's only mentioned once during an internal monologue.
I think its hilarious that they use the Enron E
the comments section seem to disagree.
Yeah I liked that, I think overall they're more like Google in the future.
Even if the creator is a retard, he's probably got some cynical writers on the team.
That show is pure horsehsit compared to Neet anti civ man.
sneaking subversive thought into mainstream culture, the tricky part is not watering down the radicalism for liberalism, idk if this show succeeds at that though.
...
That religion rant was one of the worst things to happen on the show. It made me feel gross like they were pandering to Reddit tier atheists.
kek, if anything I think it showed how crazy those people are considering how high out of his mind he was.
you know that guy is supposed to be us right? The Internet radical anti capitalists, unable to separate fantasy and reality and with autism so severe it goes of the spectrum and enters the richter scale.
I dunno, I certainly wouldn't like to be judged by what I said when I was high out of my mind, even if I was a paranoid schizophrenic autist.
Sure why would you. But thats not the point, this is the image a normie is stuck with after watching the show. As a propaganda pice, it's not in our favour.
...
well I don't think it is a propaganda piece, its a work of art, albiet one with anti-capitalist leanings.
All art is propaganda to a certain extent, it reflects reality or fantasy trough the lens of the creator(s), saying "this is desirable", "this is undesirable", or "this is reality".
The anti corporate message in this work is heavy handed and obvious, and so is the critic of the resistance, embodied as a paranoid, moralistic drug addict, lashing out in a psychotic rage after losing his father. A romantic, but self destructive character alienated from the general public.
I think your missing half the picture if you merely call it art with anti capitalistic leanings.
It's a show to remind you to make a good password for your FB.
I don't get why people are complaining so much about season 2. I think that in terms of story content and attention to detail it goes above and beyond. The first season was more exciting sure, but it was not nearly as well directed.
*tips spooks*
nice sboog lad
Also when did I imply anything of the sorts?
His reason was NOT anti natalism, but overpopulation.
Its pretty good as a show and its whole message about corporate control, but it still is incredibly ironic since the network it's on is owned by fucking Comcast
who would have guessed :^)
I bet you look at the characters listening to mr. robot's speeches with complete shock and astonishment and assume that's how everyone's reacting when you rant against the existence of money on facebook
It helped turn my mom into a anti-capitalist with my help of pointing out it's about the corruptness of capitalism.
Really making a difference there, pal.
I know, right! I need some of that "fuck society" in me so I can stop being so eager to please them
There's some pretty radical themes in there. The whole point of the hack was debt cancellation.
I was hoping they'd go into it more in the 2nd season but so far it hasn't.
I like it but I was expecting more anarchist themes, see people build a new society out of the husk and shit. Maybe they'll still go in that direction, it seems perfectly lined up for it (especially a few episodes ago where that deli was shutting down).
I was hoping they'd go more into the results of the hack (other than E-corp struggling, fbi stuff and shops closing). was particularly hoping theyd address the naivite of taking things down without having an alternative in mind.
But instead we get more pseudo-psycological bullshit which is still good to watch but dissappointing.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who convinced their parents to be socialist.
In the first episode of this season i thought the sister and her group were going to be the ones setting up alternative shit but all they did was have a party. I guess only a small part of the audience would find that interesting so they decided to skip it.
They briefly glance on it. There was that really good scene with the Fed board.
It irks me that so many shows with interesting thing going on in them just skip over the impact things have on society. That's the kind of scenario I enjoy, the "what-ifs" of how events might affect society.
I did enjoy their cheeky nod to the whole flint water situation though.
...
I'm on S1E7 now I think and .. It started off great.. but IMO it takes too much of a "Fight Club" turn. In the end all these "revolutionary" movies and shows end up being "Capitalism sucks 101". Remember S1E2 ending of Black Mirror? That. No need to revolt, just see how bad things are and go back to work. Spectacle.
As for the MC. It's all clear the moment he gets the dog. He gets a dog to save him for his owner but cannot take repsonsibility and actually make his life better. AKA he will erase debt and bring capitalism to its knees, but has no idea what to do after.
criticism of capitalism in the kynsian era: capitalism is bad because it makes us all vacuous consumers
criticism of capitalism in the late (hopefully) stages of neoliberalism: capitalism is bad cuz i aint got no job, no house, no healthcare and im up to my eyeballs in debt.
Mr robot falls into the former category.
If it was the former then how come the plot is about them trying to cancel all the debt?
I don't think this is correct. Elliot had a pretty extended rant last season about the dictatorship of money. I think they're *supposed* to be communists who want to abolish money, and this one company in particular is the best place to start for a number of reasons.
There's a protest scene where you can see an anarco-communism flag, but aside from that the show is only anti-capitalist, but at any moment he shows himself as socialism.
