I think the fundamental problem lies in the Western lack of understanding what Russia really is and what it hopes to achieve.
Russians are a nation built from an empire. Unlike westerners, who built their national identites first and then went on to conquer the globe, Russians are fundamentally imperialistic in that Russian state shaped the Rus people into what they are today. The only mode of living that a Russian can thrive in and prosper is one of dominance over his neighbours, to the near damnation of his personal living arrangements, which stems from an inherently European fear of the East and desire for borders and Asiatic lack of boundaries and desire to dominate over everything on the horizon. The only way to keep your enemies close but far is to have your borders as close to your neighbour's capital but as far away from you as possible.
This bi-polar mode of thinking forces Russians to be an expansionist power and any reaction against them is treated as a national emergency. Their posturing and domineering attitudes are whst they simply are, not what they try to portray. The only way to deal with a Russian is to break him, where your might outweighs his near-religious worship of the Russian state (see Czars/USSR), or assuage his fears and treat him as a partner, giving him the necessary buffer space but setting up borders that are impenetrable and are a place where he comes to deal with you. Russians respect only strength and only when it treats them as an equal. Cucks and warmongers need not apply.
While last czars seemed to be more European in their thinking and the country as a whole began taking on more western appearances after being included in the Great Congress of Powers, the Revolution swept that out and set the country back to middle ages, where Russian mentality always was and has not moved. The westernized elites were killed off and there is no hope of having a civilized discourse with them ever again, as Oligarchs are no different from the common Russians in their natural expansionism (and the subsequent Russian melancholy that comes from having all the land but having no use out of it).
Putin is no more a white nationalist than he is a Russian nationalist. Slavs always had dominating position in Russia and that is set to stay, but don't think they ever have any warm thoughts about us unless we are strong and able to deal with them in an uncucked fashion.
