If the government stopped paying for rental properties that make losses with money from all taxpayers, prices would re-adjust such that rental yields fix around 3-4% (so about 100-200k less).

In the short term you'd have a ton of defaulted mortgages a plus rents rising massively as the over-leveraged owners desperately try to stay ahead of interest payments and it would fuckin serve them right, they deliberately bought assets at an inflated price so they'd make losses that everyone else pays for followed by an adjustment as the economy absorbs the adjustment. It'd be a nasty adjustment though, which is why no government will actually take the pain they'd get by repealing negative gearing.
