Different user, but I can try. There are several reasons why USB flashdrives are not approved to store classified. They are physically small but can hold a lot of information, which makes them a perfect vessel to remove data from a network. It was originally not possible or easy to audit if data has been written to a falshdrive with the software available from the operating system (Windows). It wasn't until after flashdrives came out that software makers created solutions that would control (ie block) the ability to write data off to flashdrive, or if written, be able to audit what was written off. Also, as other anons have said, they also present a HUGE security risk of introducing malicious software. One other reason, and this is my opinion, is that something like this happens:

Other anons are correct about how shit goes down in a SCIF. No outside electronics, period. No cells, pagers, am/fm radios, "smart" watches, fitbits, etc… They even have cracked down on personally owned USB cables, so you can't fuck up and "accidently" plug your device in to charge it. They are also correct about modifying / destroing the ports on a mobo so they are totally inaccessible. Other options are what's known as chasity belts, which are a metal skeleton cage that goes over the computer cases and physically restricts access to the ports and makes it impossible to open the computer case to prevent tampering or gaining access to the hard drive.

Thumbdrive with secret sticker on it is also odd. If you are intentionally trying to remove classified without being found out, why would you label the media? For handling reasons, they are supposed to label any media (CDs, backup tapes, hard copies, etc) with the classification and handling requirements. I might guess they had data on this thumbdrive they thought was unclassified, they realised the data, or the compliation of data (too much unclass data together can make it classified) made the drive classified, so they labeled it accordingly and turned it in to security. To be clear, classified data should never be stored or transmitted via thumbdrive like this, so either they royaly fucked up or, in my opinion and seems more likely, it was like I speculated. Not trying to give them a pass, but this type of shit does happen.
