Similarly, it's normal for a person's nose and cheeks to be slightly more reddish than the rest of the face.
Because tumblr does not understand subtlety, and because tumblr artists learn by mimicking each-other rather than from primary sources like life drawing, the tumblr nose simply became more and more pronounced with each artist who mimicked it, likely oblivious to what it was originally meant to convey.
It's normal for technically proficient artists to render those slight variations in skin tone. Tumblr nose is just a bastardization of it.

Well for one, women think the idea of guy-on-guy is hot, especially if they're good looking (which most gays I know personally tend to be), for two, they start idealizing the characters (guys do this too, they just don't write or draw as much as women tend to), and like guys, they enjoy seeing/reading two attractive people getting it on. There's also the switch-up in relationship roles by the characters which appeals to women, and going back to the idealization, women tend to write in/cherrypick their favorite masculine and feminine traits because, hey, wouldn't it work if he's gay (not really, most gay dudes in my experience tend to be pretty masculine anyways). Hell, one of the reasons so many ladies were into Spock is because he was cold, logical, and nearly emotionless, and thus harder to get than Kirk who by comparison is a total slut.
I'd also hazard a guess that they like seeing men's emotions at the forefront, too, seeing as guys tend to hide that sort of thing for the most part - although I'm basing this assumption off of all the female-focused books whose portrayal of relationships can be described with the words "emotional pornography."
