This is all very fascinating to me, being a relative newfag to the sphere of user culture/whatever you want to call it. The majority of goons today are people who were gifted accounts so that they could be part of the "cool kids club," so to speak. A prime example would be with Chucklefish Games, a publishing company that sprung up around Starbound because they received far more funding than they ever thought they might.

It was eventually leaked that their forums had a special, invite-only subform for goons. Every thread on the subject was deleted, quickly, and they tried mocking the backers and players to settle the matter.

The dev team began taking in extra members some time before this happened later revealed to be goons, all of them. Tiyuri and MollyGos both ended up with accounts that, last time I checked, were active.

It's a bit indicative of the goon mindset, that they should pick up minor players in every conceivable place, rather than a few major players in key places.

When it doubt, zero it out. The real trick is to encrypt your disk before you need to delete it. Then if you are caught off guard, you simply don't remember the password. So many people were goons in the early to mid 2000s, it's easily to give goonery credit for nearly everything that happened on the Internet after that. I'll explain what I remember.

Helldump was a forum for goons to make fun of other goons. It was around in the early days of the site, but then the admins closed it around 2009 I think. I don't remember why it was removed but I think it was to do with real life drama–somebody committing suicide? The way Helldump worked was basically, a forums goon says "i have aspergers" here, "dad left us" there, etc. and helldump goons would be looking out for any such posts while browsing the forums. Often posts like that would get quoted as one-offs and put in a Goons.txt thread. If anyone stood out enough, they'd get their own thread. Figure 1 (in two parts) displays the first page of a helldump thread that was popular enough to go into the Comedy Goldmine of SA. Some things about the forum culture I want to point out:
- The multiple people who are banned. This is a really common sight when you're reading years-old threads on SA. And those are just the people who didn't buy their account back. People used to get banned all the time in SA's heyday, and the mods kept up that sort of thing even when the site started becoming less popular and relevant, accelerating the decline.
- Some apparently-blank posts are posts with images in them. Everyone back then used this website called waffleimages which was a goon-only version of imgur before imgur. I don't remember whether the exclusiveness was enforced strictly or if it was just because goons didn't talk about or use the website off SA. Waffleimages went down years ago and a lot of pictures in old SA threads were lost.

It's been awhile, so it's hazy but ill try to recap.

LF (Laissez's Fair, a pun on laissez-faire) was a politics board that I guess was intended to be a more relaxed version of D&D (Debate and Discussion. D&D was for effort posting. LF was for shitposting (a politics board for FYAD/byob/Helldumpers).

The main thing I remember was MAOISM-THIRD-WORLDISM taking over. At first it seemed like posters were ironically pushing it. It quickly blew up and became a commie/marxist/social justice forum characterized by the typical goon-snark.

ShitRedditSays was 100% MTWs from LF. When SRS was causing a commotion on Reddit a few years back I remember trying to tell people this but for some reason it was mostly denied.

They had a fucking like 400 page mega-thread on LF literally called SHIT REDDIT SAYS that they just documented "shitty" (non tumblr-marxist-socialist-progressive Reddit posts).

I don't know if these people were always Goons or just subverted SA, but they definitely are responsible for making SA an even bigger cuck-hole as well as "Weird Twitter" and ShitRedditSays

Agreed regarding the outlook on SCALE and PMan's sociological theories in general in that he's definitely onto something but it may be an overreach to attribute it to every problem we face. MPC has a lot of fantastic content and I try to check it at least once a day; they were one of the best resources for both valuable insight and lulz during the 2016 election (their absolutely savage annihilation of Rick "Pissdad" Wilson is probably my single favorite troll of all time, and I've been a sperglord user since '06). The general level of discussion at MPC regarding political topics in general is consistently among the highest you will find anywhere on the internet.

All of this being said, though, I'm still on the fence about whether I should actually start a posting career; I don't think I could deal with PMan's weird hysteria that he goes into every time somebody brings up white nationalism as a general concept. The brand of sociologically-inclined, racially-aware Paleoconservatism that MPC adheres to is already implicitly White Nationalist and the pissy hairsplitting that goes on over there re: right wing naming conventions would drive me insane to actually participate in (I think there are two big threads on the first page of the general discussion forum about it already).

Underrated post. This is a classic tactic and generally the case. I remember I was part of a BlogTalkRadio raid group from 4/b/ back in late 2013 and we had something similar happening. During some raids we would have whiteknights come in and tell the target they were being raided or try and spam our IRC. They would always credit a 'rival' group and shill the hell out of our raid threads who generally seemed to spend most of their time in a tinychat room but sometimes did similar raids. We really had no reason to be fighting however this kept happening and on some occasions we retaliated but it soon suspected a 3rd party was doing it. Eventually through some discussion between the organizers of each group we managed to conclude it was a couple of people who were behind the orchestrated 'war' and playing both sides.

In regards to why, it seems they just wanted to watch both groups get mad and fight eachother. There may have been something about the IRC server ops g-lining them at some point but we were only a channel on Mibbit at the time so it was totally out of our control anyway.

I have some strong suspicions this might go back to a larger operation to destroy coordination between anons and disenfranchise regulars. Our group was one of the last raid groups to remain on Holla Forums until the absolute crackdown of early 2014 and wasn't long after that GG started and the migration to 8ch. Also at this time there was talk about 'shillbots' which were very real despite censorship of the topic. One day some user came into our IRC and demonstrated it to me and how quickly they could spawn premade threads with replies using some shared tool they had access to. user never came back after but I managed to get my hands on the source code to something similar and was able to get it working on Holla Forums using proxy farming and a captcha solving API. If hooked up into any kind of sophisticated AI I can only imagine the damage that could be done. I highly suspect some of these bot operators have entire threads planned out and simply let their bots loose to talk to eachother with either a script or language generation. You'll sometimes see it here where 2 posters may have 100 messages to eachother with random biblical theology rants.

Another problem with Goons being potentially eliminated is that wherever they go they teach a small portion of their ways to the pawn cells they create. This leads back to my previous point of continuing as we are.
