Uhh hello, 50 years ago you had to be gifted to be an engineer. You had to have a real sense of materials, stress flows. An intuition about the correct way to design things. I think the jobs to have in this future are the people that dream up art to build with automated industry. The people that just have a knack for building or designing things that are incredibly pleasing to use. There are plenty of people out there with this knack, the trick is getting the education to apply it. For example: I really have a brain for designing integrated systems, I know about electronics well enough to communicate with specialists, same with mechanics but I know fuck all about CAD and automated manufacturing. So I am learning about both in order to express myself in the contemporary language (we communicate ideas through CAD files and G-Code now, not paper drawings).

Before automation got really good, 'hand made' meant luxury and quality. Now a mass produced, top-tier CNC mill can do far better work than a manual mill operated by the best machinist to have ever lived.
In the near future (and I am projecting here) I think 'human designed' or 'hand designed' will come to stand for luxury and quality like hand made did. The pleebs will buy stuff built for bottom dollar designed by AI, while the upper class wont. One of the best gigs you can get right now is designing and adapting technology for the upper class; you will be well taken care of if you are good. I don't think this is going to change any time soon. Being somebody that makes the upper class feel like a patron of the arts when they purchase your work is a very smart place to be.

As for middle class work, there will still be technicians and trademen. Somebody has to fix the machines, somebody has to build the factories, somebody has to plumb them. One of the better middle class gigs you can get right now is being a maintenance guy for precision technology.

But assuming a fast reset 'happening' does come 3d printing will be a must for any community or culture. Anyone whom owns or has the capacity to mine the large industrial scale waste facilities we call trash dumps will be sitting on a gold mine at that point.

Taking the organic material of the mine and using an hyrdro based pressure cracker to create hydrocarbon chains will produce plastics. The cracker will strip the smaller metals and heavy elements from the process and allow it to later be sifted out and processed itself into basic metallic powders and alloys that will be needed in many 3d printer processes. That production cycle will push recycling into a major and needed component of the society that uses distributed 3d printing manufacturing.

Any scenario in the near term that uses 3d printing as a major component of its industrial base would at this point require the collapse of international trade as we know it today. Which would also have drastic effects on the basic cheap materials supply chain that supports it. So you also would have to account for the supplies going into the printers even if the final output it wholly local.

On a side note. They tried a fucking project in africa to have shitty cheap 3d printers given away for free with only the requirement that you would build another 3d printer with yours and give it away to others for free. The idea being to create exactly what you described since africa cannot into getting into the global system effectively. That idea cratered obviously because niggers cannot into such shit, and the basic supply of even powdered plastics was beyond even African abilities to facilitate.

Linux is great for some things, I run it myself for those things. But running enterprise workstation software is not its forte. If you want a job using CAD you need to learn the pro software.

If I were you I would build a mid level rig and run Autodesk Fusion 360. It is a powerful product and free for small companies, hobbysts and students.

If you aren't familiar already look up the Metallicarap project. It's an electron beam 3D printer that can do several interesting tricks like smooth metal prints, creating solar panels, near total self replication, and refining titanium. This would make CNC mills obsolete as quickly as it could self replicate, which would be exponential or logarithmic or something fancy and mathematical meaning really fast.

But its progress is an agonizingly slow thing.

Inspection is still a very manual, very skill intensive practice and isn't anywhere close to being automated.

Even right now, CNC shops run in batches, everything needs to be set up and calibrated to deal with the first article. This is years of learning over the head of the average Joe.

Additive and subtractive technologies are complimentary. One isn't going to replace the other. Sure additive will decrease what we use CNC mills and lathes for, but they aren't going to go away.

Well you're absolutely right. The 3D printer is quite a bit more game changing though. What's more is an electron beam printer (proven technology, the Metallicarap project is simply an open source attempt) could print a lathe or CNC machine, and a wild array of other specialized tools.

For starters, don't call additive manufacturing machines, 3D printers. That is what no-talent faggot tech hipsters call them. The terms you are looking for are Electron Beam Melting (EBM) or Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing (EBAM).

The question I have is to what precision can these machines build structures? Are we talking .001? From what I have seen it looks like like better than .005 and worse than .001, so basically a high precision casting. Still impressive as fuck, still a huge step forward. But a CNC mill will provide an order of magnitude more precision.

So sure you can print a CNC machine with EBM but then what precision will it have? .010? Hobbyists are building DIY mills and lathes that can hold .002 This EBM machine can't self replicate either, it can't both build and assemble itself. It can't build motors, circuit boards, wiring and everything else that goes into a machine. It can't dial itself in. It can't inspect its own work.

This is where the rubber meets the road. I get that you are a tech evangelist but this goes way deeper that mass production of consumer electronics in the form of additive manufacturing machines. A lot goes into precision machining metal, there is a reason shop time costs so much.

CNC mills and lathes touch off to work using very similar probes to CMMs, if you wanted to you could use one as a ghetto CMM. I brought this up because you proposed that EBM machines could self replicate. They can no more self replicate than a mill or a lathe can produce duplicate parts to its own. Nothing changes with EBM except for the process.

No I am just studying machine shop operations. The more I learn the more I understand how ignorant I was of how much human effort and intuition goes into producing in tolerance products. $20,000 is absolute chump change in this industry. Good large CNC machines are over $1,000,000, tooling on top of that. I don't want to even guess what cutting edge additive machines go for.

Yes. At something crazy like eighty percent efficiency from AC line to metal powder enabling you to melt everything from silicone to copper to insulators. It's easier to list the things you can't deposit and melt in an EBAM printer.

You may want to keep reading about machine shops because I'm making you look ignorant right now by pointing out that electron beem three dee prntmg is capable of printing circuit boards, transformers, even some transistors. That's why they cost a cool mil, and why an open source self replicating EBAuMs world would be a much more disruptive technology than a milling machine.
