You have to pass a theoretical and practical exam, so it can take a few months to prepare for that (you need to know both a lot about guns and about the law), but other than that, anybody can get a gun for self defense. I thought it was like that in most countries. The catch is actually using the gun – if someone goes against you with a knife and you shoot him dead, it's very possible you will end up in prison for using excessive power. You have to prove that killing him with your gun was unavoidable and you were in mortal danger (say, if he was already stabbing you in the chest, shooting him dead would be perfectly fine) – that giving a warning shot or just injuring him wasn't enough. They will examine shit like how far from you he was, whether he knew martial arts or not, his body mass in relation to yours, etc. and you can get really fucked if it starts looking like your opponent was a fat guy with asthma and you could've just ran away at any time. Whatever the case, if you do use a gun in self defense, you unavoidably will have some legal bullshit to go through. Then again, if you do think someone's going to stab you dead, legal trouble is prefferable. It's harsh, but it's also true that gun-related crime is rare.

Just like user below say, it's only known to me state in EU when there is "shall issue" licence to buy gun when you cite self defence as valid reason. Was in Czech Republic / Slovakia this summer and I can only say, very impressed. We came from Slovenia, not expecting anything bad, but you know when you first visit any country you get a little anxious. Well that dissapeared very quickly after touching down. Extremely beautiful architecture, clean streets, no niggers anywhere, people really friendly. To add, cheap good beer and hruškovec, good food, not crowded, beautiful landscape. We are definitely coming back. One thing that also struck me is it somehow feels safer on the streets even at night. Was a great stay at our Slavic brothers, most welcome to visit Slovenia too. You'll love it
