1) A fighter that's as good as the F-16/15 line, but cheap enough to have them everywhere we're operating, which is everywhere except Pyongyang, last I checked.

3) Development of drones that can outperform existing planes, stay airborne for days, and that is also cheap enough to flood the sky with them as needed.
4) Light, medium-range/medium-capacity transports like the Osprey that can deliver squads of SF operators twice as fast as a helicopter.
5) A final solution to the Jewish question that leaves everybody feeling better.

I don't think the Air Force even needs a multi-role with their plethora of good platforms (just update the attack platform which is always less expensive than a fighter), and v/stol is stupid in my opinion, but a multi-role is perfect for the Navy's operations. It allows for operational maneuvering that wasn't available during the days of the F-14 and A-6.

Multi-role is supposed to be a a work horse. Not great but sufficient. The F(E)/A-18E/F/G is a perfect example of what it's supposed to be. The question is whether you want to build a completely new platform (F-35) or design another upgrade to the Hornet platform… well, I guess we could call this hypothetical platform a Hyper Hornet which would be pretty cool.

IRST is good stuff vs. stealth - Most modern air vehicles sport them - The Typhoon has a particularly good one as well, and the F35 has a 360deg version, however the actual usable range for ID and targeting is a little over half the 'something is somewhere out there range'. Altitude and weather have a very large effect on the sensor, so it isn't a silver bullet - The HUGE plus is it is passive.

Networked radar requires a lot of platforms to be really effective. Not a whole lot of countries are set up industrially or economically to produce the latest fighters sporting them in meaningful numbers. When they do, you're right, it's gonna problem.

The Gripen cleans its fucking clock and at a cost per flight hour a tenth the rate. It has a better maximum instantaneous turn rate than the F-22. That turn rate is crucial for dogfighting and dodging a missile. It also has the smallest IR signature. An American-made variant with our electronics mojo could make for a damn fine fighter that we could afford to keep in the air in sufficient numbers.

The SU-35 annihilates the F-16 and F-18 in simulations, and kills more F-35's than vice versa.
