Japan/Asia invents something

That's really not how it happens OP. Westerners are better at creativity and coming up with wholly new ideas. East Asians lack in creativity but are slightly more intelligent and exceedingly good at copying and improving upon existing designs/concepts.

I've seen this firsthand working in Asia but you can also see these trends in history and current tech/art news.

Well, all the original Sonic stuff was a back-and-forth collaboration between Sega America and Sega Japan, so it's hard to say who is responsible for what.

FUN FACT: Sonic was designed in an internal Sega competition among employees who submitted mascots. The humble employee designer of Sonic said he "just put Felix the Cat's head on Mickey Mouse's body."

Reportedly Rilakkuma, a staple of crane games fucking everywhere in Japan, was designed at some company that requires it's employees to come up with a mascot every month. What a country two months and I'm going home, hopefully.
Wasn't Sonic originally going to be called "Mr Needlemouse"? Though I can see "needle mouse" being a direct translation from kanji (by some Sonic fan in the early days of the Internet who only bought a Japanese dictionary to look up those two letters) and the name actually said "Mr Hedgehog".
