Because typically they face adversity of some form or another in their lives, or by some means or another have failed/are prevented from experiencing the enjoyment or pleasure or prestige or whatever that society says that they're entitled to. Since the fault can't reasonably lie with the society in which they want to take part, they reason that it must be some outside, alien factor disrupting the "natural order" of things.
