There is, actually, a somewhat painless solution to the US national debt that does not explicitly devalue the dollar. The steps are as follows:

First: Decharter the fed and confiscate its assets, declare that all outstanding dollars are still US legal tender, and that the US government now has exclusive rights to print more. The Fed's balance sheet holds about 2.5 trillion in US debt, which could be canceled outright, and more in mortgage backed securities, which are assets with some amount of value.

Second: Instead of revaluing the dollar specifically, revalue gold. Allow $10,000 in US currency (actual number would have to be calculated separately) to be purchased directly from the government in exchange for one oz of gold. Do not allow the reverse of this transaction. This will increase the amount of gold in the US gov't coffers and prevent a large scale run against the dollar. It also creates a modest amount of controlled inflation, which devalues some of the debt.

Third: Back all outstanding and all future US debt with the gold in the treasury, at the value mentioned above, or a premium to it. Ideally, you want the debt holders to prefer payment in dollars over gold, but the gold backing gives the debt an intrinsic value, and ensures that it stays a solid asset. This keeps most of the US financial system, the pension funds, etc, afloat.

Voila. The US dollar is now the gold dollar instead of the petrodollar, the system is recaptured rather than being destroyed, and future government borrowing is constrained by the amount of gold the government has with which to backstop the new debt issuance.

look in the bottom right where it shows gold/silver dollar ratios. You're figures are pretty accurate based on the numbers we get from the Fed but there is probably even more money out there than that which would give monetary metals an even bigger boost.
