Yeah, that comic is good stuff. You might also like Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper, which is basically an offshoot of Year One and has a similar tone.

In continuance with that timeline, I'd also recommend The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Different writers and artists, but they're clearly meant as sequels to Year One.

Those are great recommendations if you like absolute garbage.

Well I do like delicious brown catwoman.

Correct.
Everyone knows the best Catwoman series to read is Guardian of Gotham.
It's fun, moderately imaginative and has cheesecake.

Story time it m8, I wanna read it

Sure, why not. Stuck on hold on the phone, might as well kill some time.

And people seriously try to tell me cuckchan is better

Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham
Issue 1
An Elseworlds story back from 1999.
For the uninitiated, Elseworlds was DC's first foray into multiple universes that were properly thought out. Each story took place on a new Earth, and very few of them ever mingled.
This allowed everyone the chance to write their own new, interesting story that took the DC characters and thrust them into new situations.

Unfortunately, a fair number of these were just "lmao roles are reversed or Superman and Batman are chicks :^)"

This is such a title.

I was planning on storytiming a couple dozen issues of comics today, anyways; might as well share good comics rather than the shit being pumped out today.
Though admittedly, the guy that asked did have a writing style similar to a newfag.

We don't take those people seriously

And I fucking spoiler it like a retard because I didn't have post options expanded.
Oh well, on we go.

I like this Killer Croc. I prefer his head to be like this, as opposed to "lol humans with scales"

The anatomy of Catwoman is hilariously bad at points in this comic. Her tits balloon up at random points and her back arches in strange ways.
Joker wasn't as well done, but this version was still fun back in '99 compared to the version they were going with in Earth-1.

Ignore my first response, I am trying to talk to someone on the phone while doing this and didn't read your post correctly.

That final page always makes me laugh.
I don't know why; they play it completely straight but it cracks me up.

I want to fug female Two-Face.

H N N G

Isn't it funny how the "Sexist" character are the ones that original feminists would have loved?

Take notes, aspiring artists:
2nd page, top-right panel; that is NOT how you draw a face of surprise. That is the face of a submissive mind-controlled sex slave.
If you are an artist, draw that instead.

That's actually a really good joker design, in a way. I like the idea that he's forcing himself to always be laughing

I want to fug female Two-Face and female Alfred.
I'd make Selina watch.

That maniacal Batman laugh reminds me of the wacky art in Batman: Odyssey.
I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

Her takedown on Croc reminds me of the hero Ant, who wore a Spider-Man style suit and plonked her various bodyparts on top of people.
Amazingly, people didn't think it was appropriate to show near comics aimed for children.

I liked The Batman version of Joker. He was genuinely fun and always giggling.

Even when he's the villain, Batman can just pull a magic trick out of his arse to further the story.
Truly a gift.

A good twist. Playing the long game instead.

Good fight scene here.

I remember waiting a whole month for this to be concluded.
Good times, back when comics were willing to try something new for fun, not for sales. Well, sales were involved, but it wasn't all done by looking at sales charts.

I liked that version of the Joker too.

Since when was that band known for speed and agility?

Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham
Issue 2

Speaking of hating waits, I'm on hold and need to speak to someone. I make these calls all the time and take about 2 minutes, disregarding the waiting.
I've been on hold for 2 hours. I swear there's an organised group dedicated to pissing me off.

Fuck, that's actually a much more tragic version of the Batman backstory. BUt I think it implies too much "self guilt" for it to truly work.

Another brilliant face by Jim Balent.
He truly captures the emotion of surprise, as in "I'm surprised no one told him to redo this".

I remeber Linkara reviewing this comic once.

That was the "rastafarian" version with huge feet, right? I liked him because of how different he was.

Not sure about my feelings towards the Catsignal. It's a tad too detailed to work. I'd of prefer a generic cat face with smooth edges.

Oh, and Jim's face at the end is another crack-up. Never really paid attention to the smaller faces in this, only the big zoomed in ones.

Yup.
He was fun, had lots of gimmicks and was well used.
The Riddler was also well done in that series, and Mr Freeze was completely butchered but still fun.

Reminds me alot of the Vampire Batman from Elseworlds

I loved the Penguin in that cartoon. Minus the part about him doing kung fu flips but still good.

...

I like the use of light in the first page here, and then they go ahead and mess about on the very next page. Then back to well lit in the 3rd.
That final panel on Bruce, despite being as goofy as all the others we've seen, actually works well there.

Yup, this took a few scenes from the Batman and Dracula Trilogy.
Then both the Trilogy and this were reused as the basis for Flashpoint Batman.

If you enjoy Vampire Batman, I'd recommend watching Bruce Timm's Justice League: Gods and Monsters. There's 3 mini-episodes and a film, and are their own Elseworlds kind of story.
Shame that was cut in favour of more Nu52 films.

I liked the Kabuki Twins. I saw a LEGO set from the LEGO Batman film with them as minifigures, so I must get to buying that.

I think I remember why I was so drawn to this comic as a youngster.
Did I mention I want to fug female Alfred? Because I really want to fug female Alfred.

I only vaguely remember Rasta-Joker from when I was watching WB Kids before feeling "Too Old" for i. Do you think I might enjoy it if I go back to it?

Well, I guess he's also blind and uses bat sonar.
More sexy not-Alfred.

It's much more, for lack of a better word, kiddy. While BTAS tried to do mature cartoons, The Batman makes everything more comical and slapstick.
It's a love it or hate it kind of thing, from what I've seen around here.

Not gonna lie, I think I just might like sassy cheesecake Alfred better than sarcastic british Alfred.

Spoilered, only because this is the part of the story I dislike the most, and don't wish to see the thumbnails.
Have a guess what makes me sad.

I actually loved the kung fu penguin. Hell, catch me on a good day and I admit I like rasta-joker.

Post season 2

Also, That series is legitimately one of the few to get Nightwing right. Sure, it was for one episode but man, it felt good.

I think I may legitimately have brain damage.

As I read through these 4 pages, I quickly recalled the first time I read this book.
On the first page here, I wasn't really paying attention as I flicked the page and only glanced at the final panel, and was so sure that Batman's head was on the body of a sexy woman.
Unfortunately, it was Batman's head being hit by a sexy leg, so I wasn't quite as excited.

I kinda wanna see regular Batman fight this Batman. Would be a great fight, and I'd love to see regular batman crush both.

The maid getting killed?

THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT!

I seem to recall a story where Batman fought evil Batman, though I can't place it.

;-;
No porn, either, which is the true travesty.

>Edgelord Batman kills Brooks because reasons

As someone who has gone through multiple windows, I get upset when I see a window jumped through and broken like that.
Suspension of disbelief is in effect for most of the media I consume, but that is one of the few things that will make me call bullshit.

Another good fight scene.
Fights in these longer issues are almost always better, as they aren't forced to condense it down to a couple pages to fit more ads for Doomsday eating Snickers bars.

Oh no, you don't get to lead a post like that and not explain what happened.

Storytime within a storytime, Morrison.

Thank God we avenge Brooks.
She lives on in our hearts, minds and penises.

Well, from a certain point of view, he isn't wrong.

Now, we've had some pretty generic "durr the hero is the villain", but it was well done.
But this was a truly great twist that you just couldn't see coming.

And just as I write this, the phone is answered and I'm finally done. Now for my next long-ass phone call.

Still wanna see 90's Batman kick the shit out of both.

There's that brain damage again.
The reveal is kind of ruined, but oh well.

Thanks user. Got any other good books?

The evil Batman was kinda dumb, but making him intol the Joe Chill of Catwoman's childhood was a pretty fucking neat idea. That was pretty good.

wow. Really good story even though the art is really cheesecake. But then again I like some cheesecake.

That kind of reminds me of the 1989 Batman with the Joker being the one who killed Bruce's parents.

I almost would have preferred it where Catwoman inspired Bruce to become Batman, much like Batman inspired Selina to become Catwoman.

Also who is she going to take as a Robin? Cheetah?

smh

3 times in total:
>they stick around for drinks under the guise of making sure i don't have a concussion

2nd time:
>being a smart arse aussie, say "oi ya fucking cunt"
Coincidentally, I stopped being a smart arse in public after that one.

3rd is the least fun, imo
Turns out the guys he bought the glass from were the contractors he didn't pay to install said glass, so they made him pay triple for generic glass panes.
Really, I was the hero as I got them to give him the proper glass.

And there you have it, my adventures through various panes of glass and my hatred of incorrect glass shattering in media.

Her Robin would be Dick Grayson anyways for that sweet, sweet /ara/.

I'll be starting another storytime later with a special theme.

You and OP have inspired me to go back and read Batman: Year One. Thanks user.

...

...

Is there a Superman Year One?

Not really, but if you want a kind of complete origin story, there's Superman: Earth One. 3 volumes depicting Clark coming to Metropolis and doing all the usual shit you see with Lois and Jimmy.

Bullshit bitch, I just read all three and all three are amazing comics by today's standards.

Read them all.

Man, I really wanted a Superman Year One. I'm very interested in his first year as Superman. Would be interesting honestly.

His early years are pretty up in the air, depending on writer and continuity.
Some have him being Superboy, some have him being something like the Blur from Smallville, some have him only being Superman once he leaves the farm etc.

I don't know why he gets his origin messed around so much. The other JL founding members are all pretty much set in stone, so you'd think the most recognisable character would be the most consistent.

I thought Birthright was supposed to be the definitive superman origin?

Original canon was Man of Steel, then Birthright, but now the "official" canon is Superman: Secret Origin, but Nu52 and Rebirth don't seem to follow it.

I'll read it and come back to you on what I think.

Superman: Secret Origin is amazing, especially when you take into account Superdad. He's everything people would want in a Superhero honestly.

The "Pieces storyline in Batman 710-712 (pre-Flashpoint) also acts as a sort of sequel to Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Two-Face, Gilda Dent and Falcones.

So taking what I know of Superman in Rebirth, and the Superman: Secret Origin, I have to say that the writers have done a hell of a job bringing back old supes. I've read quite a bit of Superman, from Kingdom Come, to Nu52, to now with Rebirth.

My verdict is that basically, Superman is back.

I think most comic artists have only seen windows smashed in movies, so they tend to draw it like the sugar-glass they use in Hollywood, which explodes like a bullet hit it into tiny pieces when it breaks. Real glass just fractures into sheets under impact.

Ashida Kim noted in a book that you have to clear the frame when diving through a window or the hanging glass can come down on you like a guillotine.

TDKR
Akham Asylum: A serious house on serious earth
The killing joke

These are the essentials.
You've seen them in top 100 lists for a reason

...

I'd include Mad Love.

As far as runs on the main books go, I liked Neil Adams, Marshall Rogers, and the Denny O'Neil/Norm Breyfogle ones.

I like Grant Morrison's Batman, but I can't stand Damien.
I dug most of Batman Incorporated, even if the main artist tried a little too hard to be Frank Quitely's mini-me.

Arkham's garbage though

It's alright. The writer wanted one thing, the artist did some other thing, it turned out alright.
Like Pat Mills and Simon Bisley on Slaine, they had completely different ideas, but it turned out alright.
It's funny to read the script that comes with the later editions and realise just how much Dave McKean disregarded everything Morrison wrote…

I only know that Robin was suppose to feed Batman information from GCPD, what else got hatched?

Thats more fucked up then the death of batmans parents.

One I know is that Batman was supposed to just cut himself with a shard of glass when the Joker rattled him with word association, and McKean had him stab right through his god damn hand.

I suspect that Killer Croc was supposed to just stab him in the side, but McKean showed him fucking IMPALED.

I know there was a lot of Watchmen-style symbolism in the background, lots of specific objects that McKean didn't bother drawing.

I love the word-association sequence.

Jesus Christ

Artist definitely knew sultry and sexy.

Where, oh where, have you gone, great artists of yesteryear?

Jim Balent still works, just not on anything you'd care about
