The only chance a kurdish state has is to disassociate itself with the PKK and establish a capitalist democracy, and become backed by the west. The YPG isn't the only Kurdish player in Syria or in the fight against ISIS. The Kurds making a decision doesn't mean the YPG will follow suit.

They will have to pick a side for a chance at statehood. The Kurdish want a state, more than they want to support the pkk.

The U.S. will back whatever faction serves their interests at the moment.

No not in the traditional sense. They want autonomy, not the defined borders of a Nation-State. A big part of their ideology is a rejection of the nation-state.

However Al Qaeda did start off as a US proxy during the Soviet War in Afghanistan.

Al-Nushra is supported by the US though.

Listen, it really boils down to this.

The US can pick these factions in the fight against ISIS:

1. Al-Nushra who are small and do not have anything near the man-power to take down ISIS. Also, they might not be willing to fight other salafists very hard

2. Bashar's state, who are a Russian satellite and would thus further Russian interests in the ME

3. FSA who are poorly organized and have salafists sympathies

4. The YPG who are commies that don't really care much about anything but an area thats not that interesting to Big Capital

Between these evils, the lesser one is clear.

I think the CIA still provides some support for some Safalists within the FSA, while the Pentagon is mainly supporting the SDF.
