Roland redoes his entire adventure at the end of the last book. Logically, this movie doesn't follow any of the books and instead follows Roland after he reached the top of the tower.

I'm only on book five, but apparently there's some bullshit about alternate versions of the same events, and the the story recurring in cycles. Supposedly the film is not actually an adaptation or a reboot but a sequel, and part of the cycle that happens after the book series.
