The current state of Wine

I've been fairly impressed with how much progress Wine has been making over the past year, so I thought I'd open a thread about recent developments with the compatibility layer.

I've finally been able to get Shantae: Half Genie Hero to run in both DX11 and 9 in wine-staging-nine 2.16. Impressive that DX11 works, but DX9 with Gallium 9 still performs a lot better.

Maybe Gallium 11 will be a thing one day... maybe.

Wine is great for older directx9 games. Has some compatibility with directx11 games. Runs legacy windows applications that weren't built by microscam perfectly. Runs all windows xp and before applications flawlessly. It runs pre windows XP software better then windows 10 for some reason.

It needs to be ported back to openbsd though along with a non-linux based freebsd port. For some (((reason))) the openbsd port was shoahed a while back.....

The DX11 support is coming along pretty well. And, theoretically, DX12 support shouldn't take nearly as long since it's so similar to Vulkan.

Hows Fallout: New Vegas running in Wine these days?

was it another "maintainer stops giving a crap, goes back to windows for erogameu" deal?

Hi Uncle.

Last time I tried, it had a lot of graphical glitches, but it was playable

I recently tried using audio VSTs for Windows with Carla through Wine. More than 90% of them worked very well, and the few that did not were because of GUI glitches that probably had nothing to do with Wine.
We really are at a great place right now with it.

Wine gets a lot of simi-deserved shit, but there are probably thousands of games you can play without Windows thanks to it.

I've been hearing that Wine has hit a wall, development-wise, on Macs. I assume it has something to do with OpenGL.

Only thing that doesn't work these days is the Pip-boy's radio.

Been playing Dragon's Dogma the past Week. Almost feels native with Gallium9.

This is bullshit...

All Wine has to do is support Metal. Not like that would be much work or anything.

One thing I've always wondered was if MS wanted to, could they shut Wine down? I mean, they extort phone makers for the NTFS code in the Linux kernel.

If it gets big enough yes. The only reason MS went after android is because there was huge monetary incentive for them.

They've already tried shutting down codeweavers/wine. They failed because of (((unexplained reasons))) and because the devs have a very strict clean room policy for code. ZOG needs wine for something. That's the only reason it exists in the capacity it does.

How about photoshop? I'm fine with somewhat older versions like cs5.

Steam is not free software. I thought you're better than this.

Neither are almost all games. At least the older ones aren't spyware...

Even RMS is a bit pragmatic about vidya. At least I'm running this proprietary shit in a free OS than a shit proprietary one like Windows.

So relevant.

>For some (((reason)))
The reason being that nobody wants to contribute to a cuck ecosystem like *bsd.

I didn't know we allowed the mentally ill to post here unless they developed their own OS.

It is. Mac owners have deep pockets, that was what allowed CodeWeavers to grow.

No, he's not. Games need to be Free Software as well, but he never required them (or any other software) to be freeware. Make the source code Free and keep the assets proprietary and it's fine.

Are you talking about whether the software has to be free-as-in-beer? I don't think that was brought up.
It's more subtle than that. He does think the assets should be freely redistributable (though requiring redistribution to be noncommercial is fine, if I remember correctly). He puts that as a minimum for just about all content, software or not. So even if the assets don't have to obey the four freedoms, they can't be full-on proprietary. Stallman isn't okay with it if you can't redistribute the full game for free.

Aren't I glad I'm not a fucking gaymer scum and don't need this shit to touch my computer.

Anyone know if it's possible for flash8 to export to .swf in wine?

Keep in mind that by "support metal" what you mean is "rip out their entire OpenGL stack, both for Windows-native OpenGL and WINE's D3D-to-OpenGL shim, and port it to Metal, along with creating an open source knockoff of MoltenVK for Vulkan support in the future". That is an incredibly tall order.

Yes, I meant freeware = free as in free beer, and Free = free as in freedom

I actually asking him like a year or two ago and used Doom as an example and he said that was fine.

Personally, I don't see why the assets should be legally freely distributable. The argument about Free Software is that software actually does something, and if you do not have the Four Freedoms the software is controlling you instead of you controlling the software. An asset is just a sound file or an image, it doesn't do anything on its own, so there is no need for it to be freely distributable. Maybe he meant that the assets should be in a free format, so that they would be free in a technical sense, i.e. no DRM or copy protection or proprietary file formats.

My guess is that he wasn't aware of the exact licensing details of Doom. Here's something else he said:
libervis.com/article/rms_on_the_ethics_of_non_free_art
He thinks assets need to be freely redistributable for the same reason he thinks art in general needs to be freely redistributable.

It really surprised me when I found out it can run scmpoo.

Ahh lawd, the nostalgia hits hard

How many layers of botnet will you have with your botnet/linux distribution ?
Seriously user why use steam ?
Why even pay for software that doesn't allow you the four freedoms ?
They can sell the assets separately under another license and they will have has much money if not more.
Because having a proprietary version stops illegal copies ?
People who don't want to pay don't pay and never they will.

It's nice to say it works but what kind of hardware do you have ?
Because if you have a 15000$ PC of course you can run anything you want.

Ahh, fuck, does it have a linux port?

My rig is fairly modest... It has an FX 8350 with an RX480. Gallium 9 is like fucking magic.

Does fallout 3 run any better? cause that would be pretty funny :')

The GOG version runs pretty well for me. Though New Vegas, for all the serious issues it had at launch, is actually less buggy.

I imagine you would see a big difference with using native D3D9 vs OpenGL, translated on the fly from D3D9, with weaker single-threaded performance.

How the fuck is that legal?

I just bought an 8370, actually, upgraded from a 955. I'd get an RX 580, but those aren't exactly available at the moment.

I'm mostly interested in running VNs on my laptop because I've got no time for games, but I just realized I don't know anything about them. What are some good ones that run on wine or GNU/Linux?

As far as Wine goes, you can get most stuff from the Xp/Vista era to work with minimal tinkering. There is a list of Platinum rated games too:

appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&sTitle=Browse Applications&iappVersion-ratingOp0=5&sappVersion-ratingData0=Platinum&sOrderBy=appName&bAscending=true

Well, I was mostly asking for recommends.

Septerra Core comes pre-wrapped in Wine at GOG. It's good, if you like PS1-era RPGs.

I wouldn't mind it, but can't do it if it runs 3d that much. That's why I was aiming for VNs.

It's 100% 2D. A toaster could run it, even in Wine.

Cool. Now I have something to do during my morning commute.

Pretty sure there is no torrent for the Wine version, so I'll post the store page in this one case.

gog.com/game/septerra_core_legacy_of_the_creator

Is gallium 9 even still being worked on?

Their site seems to suggest so.

to be fair the radio never 100% worked under windows either. They used some mp3 library that is just complete shit and then used it wrong anyway.

Did they ever (re-)fix the support for Windows 3.0 (16-bit) games? Exile used to run great but it's been busted for a while now.

Because you bought a copy, it's yours. You should be able to do with it as you please, just like real property, e.g. a lamp, or some other piece of furniture.
Copyright is retarded for telling people what they can do with strings of 1s and 0s. Imagine if your local hardware store sold you a 'non-commercial, non-modifiable, non-resellable, non-repairable, non-sublicensable, non-transferable' drill. Anyone sane would say that's retarded, and rightly so.

I know nothing about this, but that game looks pretty comfy.

it was pretty comfy, i knew a guy who loved it on mac but i had one of them on a shareware cd.

why? avernum is pretty much strictly better

The weird thing is that all the other radios in the game work.

If it's one of those shitty gog "ports" just install the regular windows version on wine, that way you can use an updated version of wine.

With wine's CSMT patches I wouldn't be surprised but it's just as likely CSMT doesn't help.

The GOG port runs fine in this case. They've gotten much better about their Wine wraps. There are some issues with ALT+TAB, but that's just Wine in general.

Considering FO3 runs in DX9, you'd be better off with Gallium 9 if you can use it.

A Hat in Time seems to run pretty well.

...

It'd probably be better to run Windows 3.1 in dosbox for that game.

Is this what Holla Forums calls D&C?

Just let me have my one addiction Linux pls

Well farmers still buy tractors with similar terms from john deree. So I could see it happening.

Why there is no windows port of Wine?

any linux PC is a botnet. it runs on botnet hardware and firmware

Avernum is Exile in an obnoxious perspective and dumbed down in a lot of ways. It is not better.

This had me laughing too loud and now my roommate is awake.

You laugh now, but the day will come when Win32 shit starts to break in modern Windows.

There are degrees of botnet. A Linux PC is way less so than Mac or Windows boxes.

THIS!

API's are not subject to copyright, at least in EU.

It's going to be hilarious.

Has anyone played Divinity: Original Sin 2 in Wine yet? I got it slightly launching until it says it needs DX11 (which I have a DX11 capable card).

My fifteen year old game wont run in Windows 10 S!? What the FUCK!!!

POST IS FAST

Are there any examples of older games that run in Wine and not Win10?

Does ReactOS use wine?

Normies will buy it because it sounds like the better version, then wonder why nothing runs.

Technically no, but technically yes. They share code and improve each other from time to time but the idea of ReactOS is to have a free implementation of Windows itself, I believe.

I honestly don't see why ReactOS would be ever useful if Wine is a thing.

I guess some people would just rather run windows NT.

Dungeon Keeper most likely. It barely runs on XP, let alone in VMs. IIRC I finally got it to work in a Win95 VM after spending about two hours trying to make everything work and it still had some minor problems.

Last time I tried to run DFO on linux I couldn't even get the embed html page to work. Still, I wonder if there's some workaround for this?

Wine translates Windows calls to Linux calls, it will always carry a performance hit. How you do fast things in Windows may not be the same on Linux and viceversa.
ReactOS could be theoretically faster than Windows itself.

The main performance hit is usually translating D3D into OpenGL calls. The rest is pretty minor in comparison. Just run some OpenGL Windows games in Wine and compare.

Just torrent what you want

It's not that I can't download the files, it's that I can't even try to launch the game.

the Exile games for one

They don't run at all in 64-bit Windows.

That's some serious smug you have there. Very nice.

While you're entirely correct, the only scenario where that is relevant is if you have a machine to spare (you won't run "buggy WinXP wannabe" as a main OS), and in that scenario you can probably buy a better Linux machine for Wine instead.

I'm pretty sure those poor autists coding pretend-Windows drivers have a reason to do it so I'd love to know.

Use Lutris. And It's not Wine's fault when Blizzard are the ones that break shit

pls post more anime girls holding wine.
muh dik wants to break free as in freedom

Why don't you *booru them up yourself.

Anime faggots, Holla Forumsfaggots, and gay faggots need to stay on cuckchan. You retards ruined one board, now stay in your graves.

I was playing just fine yesterday.

...

Are you retarded?

Has to be red wine in a clear glass if I'm going to get off...

Best one I got:

xsheep

Better yet, install xpenguins and pull the contrib package from pkgs.org with the sheep theme in there. Works well.

You have to go back.

If you're looking for pics they're all like you just said so you have to dig through all of them.

exhentai, pixiv, the various boorus, the various chans, twitter

Not even defending that nigger, but this is a retarded position to hold.

Alright I'm kinda surprised here. I haven't used Wine in about 4 years, but holy shit they have improved so much. I'm running Dragons Dogma without any framedrop although the loading times are a bit hit and miss. I'm using the Gallium one, it blows my mind. Most other games run flawless as well.

You can get up-to-date packages of it from the official Arch repositories.

There's some actual fans of Windows NT kernel, believe it or not.

Also, there's probably some industrial/banking environments that rely on low-level Windows software, where simple API wrapper is not enough.

FreeDOS exists for the same reasons.

Old versions of Windows are still used on ancient machines in places like physics labs that are short on money and have a card from a company that hasn't existed in 20 years and for which there is no good documentation, and the driver is a windows only binary.
So this machine just sits in the corner running windows NT 4.0/2000/XP or whatever just for that card which controls something.
I could see ReactOS being useful in that instance, but why not just run Windows-whatever if the computer isn't networked?

Or perhaps more realistically than the company going out of business is they just stopped supporting the card because they are greedy assholes who don't answer my emails requesting documentation.

Can Wine 2.0.2 run on Ubuntu 16.04?

Picked up Oblivion from GOG because it was on sale. Runs almost perfectly these days.

frames often drop below 30

No stop trying install windows.

Stays over 60 most of the time with Gallium 9. Where are you seeing it dip below 30?

Reminder ReactOS > Wine

Does ReactOS have Gallium9?

Why don't distros integrate wine?

What do you mean by "integrate"? Wine is already in pretty much every repo.

Those drops are from loading screens. Same thing happens in every Gamebryo game, even on Windows.

I'm running it right now. You won't find it on the Canonical repo, get it here:

wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

I remember Skyrim used to take over 15 minutes on the first loading screen in Wine, nowadays it runs better than it would native. Shit got good.

Reposting from Questions thread:

Am I retarded or is there literally no required """dependencies""" page on winehq for wine (for example: what Steam, Skyrim etc. requires, like directx, dotnet...)?

As far as I remember, every program had a list of what it requires to work, now it's just a massive tutorial by some autist without ever actually telling me what it needs. Where do I find this information?

Your stretching of the definition of "perfect" is forgiven thanks to Gallium HUD.

The day has already come and gone, older Windows programs already break on the latest versions.

Does Gallium9 still require proprietary drivers?

Check if it runs under Cygwin.

Use Play on Linux, else look in their config / scripts's source code for that specific program.

ur retarded

How do you /g/uys think CoD:ww2 will run on wine when it comes out nov.3?

I know cod has been shit for almost a decade but playing the ww2 beta actually got me really excited due to its classic fps feel.

>implying there ever existed any HW documentation other than a string of water cooler and sometimes shitfaced after-work pub discussions between HW and driver guys.
t. former driver engineer

Technically no. But you can't buy new cards that don't need firmware blobs anymore. As long as you're using Mesa, you can use it though.

He may have meant that MS will take WIn32 support out of mainstream consumer versions of Windows at some point. Could happen if WinS does well enough with the non-gaymer crowd.

Thankfully, most games don't talk directly to the Kernel.

Is there a technical reason Nvidia cant use G9 in their blob, or is it a bullshit legal one?

It's neither, its kikery to stop people from using older versions of their blob that aren't backdoored. Which by extension prevents nouveau users from using reverse engineered drivers.

I was talking about Gallium 9, not firmware.

Do you have some good tutorials on how to do that, mate?

...

If I could just install Autodesk 3ds Max then I'd delete my Windows partition, sadly work requires it.

I don't have anything against Wine per se, but how can we rely on something MS could shut down anytime they wanted?

Microsoft has no legal right and can not shut down Wine. If Microsoft could shut down Wine they would have by now.

Because they really cant .
I mean they can sue the developers to stop further development but not only is it impossible for them to get rid of all copies of the source code everywhere they also cant stop development from going underground in a way similar to game cracks etc. .
Thus even in the worst case scenario you would just need to wait a lot longer for new versions. And in the case of all repos somehow cucking out you would have to ask on somewhere like here for a copy instead of grabbing it from the repos.

Also

There actually was a port of WINE to Windows at one point. Eric S. Raymond thought it was hilarious.

You ain't kiddin'. Damn near runs as well as it does in Windows.

If they dared lift a finger against this after doing exactly the same thing with WSL, they'd get sued out of existence.

This is nonsense. What kind of legal power do you believe that Microsoft has over Wine?

The same ones that let them extort money out of anyone using the Linux kernel because of the NTFS code?

No, Microsoft does not have that power. What you're alluding to with Linux and NTFS is nonsense when applied to Windows and Wine. This is as asinine as Microsoft suing Vivaldi Technologies for Vivaldi browser simply for the fact that Vivaldi implements the same features as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Once you have everything installed, you just load them to Carla (plugin rack).
Now, to install it, what's your distro?

Has any work been done getting DX-to-Vulkan translation working in Wine? From what I hear, DX11-to-Vulkan would be almost as good as Gallium 11 would be if it existed.

Microsoft COULD tie the project up in litigation. But would it really be worth it? Microsoft is busy trying to get people using their "universal" apps. Why waste time trying to stop a Win32 clone?

I really wish this were true but it isn't and perhaps never has been. For a time (around 1.5 or 1.6) things really were improving for WinXP and pre-WinXP applications but at some point it seems that the crew just threw their hands up in the air, said "fuck it" and decided to only focus on contemporary, popular software from then on. It's really sad because these older, simpler programs should be easier to diagnose and run properly, wouldn't that provide a bigger sense of accomplishment for developers?

They already tried this, with reactos too which uses wine. Without any copied code they can't be touched.

This never happened.

What hasn't worked for you?
I'm not that guy, but have had similar experence. Even old shitty games that no one else has ever played worked fine.
To be fair, I have never really tried anything besides old games. I don't have a very good computer and I don't think 99% of modern games are worth my time(+ propriety software, but I do run all of wine and all it's applications in firejail, so hopefully I am mostly safe).
And back when I switched to linux years ago I made a rule I wouldn't use wine as a crutch, and I would fine linux native replacements to my windows tools, so I haven't really used it for desktop applications, certainly not in the more recent versions.

I can't usually get controllers to work. Thankfully, sc-controller is a thing now.

Every time botnet comes up CIA shills come into a thread to remind us that since there is perhaps a theoretical capability to break into nearly any computer (even if it requires physical access) that we might as well roll over and not care, and run iAMT / ME garbage, use Windows, and so on.

Their tactics are so incredibly obvious and should be viewed as a form of ass hurt.

If you're running proprietary software or a cell phone, you may as well run Intel ME. Stop using proprietary software and stop your cell phone and then you can complain about Intel ME.

What about an old Samsung galaxy with Replicant? They're supposed to have decent modem isolation

Considering most of what you'd be running in Wine is proprietary (otherwise it would have a native port), I don't think this is all that relevant.

It's a bit of a 'pick you poison' situation. Personally, I'd rather have GOG make Wine wraps than publishers give money to VP to make eON wraps.

Got The GOG editions of the Neptunia games running:

All you need to do is install Winetricks, then us it to install a few things: "$ winetricks xact_jun2010 devenum quartz wmp10 windowscodecs vcrun2012 vcrun2013"

Now run the game in a 32-bit Wine prefix, and everything should work!

Lesbian RPG simulator?

My poison is to have a couple of proprietary game systems, instead of putting things on my Libreboot system. I've got a spare Windows laptop that runs games and some CAD tools as well but that's a holdover from my Windows days and isn't being replaced when it dies.

Nah, just cute girl panties simulator. Also the girls are basically console-tans: Neptune is some sort of faux Sega thing. Vert is MS. Noire is Sony. Blanc is Nintendo.

I can't really justify spending thousands of dollars on consoles and $60 a pop on games anymore, so the more Vidya I can run in Wine, the better.

Have any of them ever showed interest in a guy though? Most of them seem at least bi-curious.

I'm a buyfag but that's not mandatory with modded consoles. A few of those are excellent value for money thanks to their hacking communities.

I don't read into typical Nip anime/vidya yuri baiting.

tweak that grass yo

iMinGrassSize=80
fGrassEndDistance=8000.0000
fGrassStartFadeDistance=7000.0000

But then I'd keep loosing things I kill and drop in the grass.

I used to play with bDrawGrass=0 because the maximum grass draw distance is still not big enough to reach the horizon in most scenes. And being surrounded by a sphere of magically appearing grass is kind of an immersion breaker.

IIRC someone recently (i.e within the last five years) made an OBGE plugin to fix this.

Some loon has been putting Wine wrapped games bundled in Flatpaks on the Piratebay. Never even occurred to me that Flatpaks would make piracy with Linux easier too.

Downloaded a couple and they seem to work pretty well. I just know there is going to be screeching over bundling Wine wraps in Flatpak format though.

Did anyone get dark souls to work properly on wine? last time I checked with 2.17 it would work full res and all and the performance was ok but the mouse would always stay on top of the screen instead of integrating with the window not only that but I couldn't get my controller to work.

Did you try this?

Nope, I'll reinstall it later.

Does anyone use the 64bit 2.1 staging version? how well does it compare to the latest 32 bit wine builds?

I spent two hours torrenting that game only for the installer to fail. I then tried using Play on Linux and that failed harder since it froze the whole program instead of bringing an error

You could just use a 32bit prefix if you already have 64bit Wine installed.

Both the Steam and GOG versions work for me. Wine Staging 2.18 with Gallium 9.

Hat in time lags a bit for me.
What's your settings?

Lags for me too. If you want it to run smoothly on modest hardware, you're going to need to run it in Gallium 9.

Let me clarify: It lags on standard settings; it lags less with CMST, and barely at all with Gallium 9.

FX 8350
RX 480
Wine-Staging-Nine 2.18

I was using CMST, I haven't bothered with Gallium 9 yet.

If you have the option, you almost always get MUCH better performance with G9 than even CMST.

I use nvidia blobs so it's not an option for me

What do you mean? how? Am I able to use 32bit builds on a 64bit wine drive?

Yes. You can set up as many prefixes as you want. Each will need its own folder though.

To make a new 32-bit prefix:
" WINEPREFIX=~/.new32prefix WINEARCH="win32" winecfg"

You can name ".new32prefix" whatever you want, maybe something like .wine32.

Then to run things in the prefix just:
"WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 wine Foo.exe."

Consider AMD for your next upgrade. If DC drops in the 4.15 kernel, at any rate. Gallium9, xWayland, and Gallium Hud are all niceties that come with open drivers.

Is Gallium 9 actually D3D9 or is it just a more efficient way of translating D3D9 to OpenGL? Never looked that closely into it since I'm using an Nvidia card.

Man, wine is going just great. Only a matter of time till muh games is no longer a valid excuse to use windows.

What's the best AMD card for a Linux build? Are all the recent ones fully supported? I have a Win7 machine for gaming that I'm looking to replace. I know all recent hardware is botnet but even with the botnet I'd prefer a better OS on bare metal.

AMD isn't quite up to where Intel is with supporting hardware prior to its release but they're working on it. One of the last major pieces for the open drivers hits in 4.15.

Right this second? Either an RX 480 or 580. They should perform about as well, if not slightly better than a GTX 780. After DC drops in the kernel, Vega.

I happen to know you in particular can't play 64 bit games with it though. wine is 32 bit only no WoW64 on void.

Just get the 64 bit version of wine

Read my post again.

I'm still confused on what you mean.

void is a linux distro.
wine is a program.
programs are distributed via packages.
every distro builds and packages the software they want to distribute individually.
now consider:

The 8350/8370 is pretty neat
Was using one until my MSI 970 gaymen board was close to burning to death and jumped ship to a Ryzen 1700 + gigabyte X370 gaming 5

So does voids package repos not contain wine64? I have used 64 bit programs with wine before.

Thank you, would it be worth picking up two or would using a GTX980 be fine for games that require GPU passthrough? That's the main reason I'm building a new system, the Win7 box has a Haswell in it with no VT-d support.

I'm also building another to put in a candy cab for arcade games and /fightan/. I'd like to run Linux there too because I can customize the GUI.

Does anyone know how to fix the audio issues i've been having with A Hat inTime running on wine?

Anybody know how to fix the fonts in Monster Girl Quest with the English patch?

What are your thoughts on PlayOnLinux? Havent used it yet And neither Wine yet, because just recently I am in Linux but neither I heard much about this. It is a frontend of Wine, that supposedly helps a lot, but I havent heard of this on Holla Forums, so I dont know how good it is or if it have some issues.

Skip it and use Lutris.

Any reasons for why? Just curious. Could at least say some reasons.

Development of GoL has slowed to the point that it may as well be dead. Lutris is more active. Though really, best to learn how to Wine for yourself.

This means Snaps lose.

Good to know it, thanks.

I checked out their site...

Sounds like bloat up the ass. I just want a maintainable way of managing Wine setups, not to turn my PC into a console.

It's shit.
Theres no reason to use it when simple wine + winetricks can get most the jobs done.
It's used mostly as a idiots solution to installing wine, even though wine isn't that hard to learn.

Bloat and convenience go hand-in-hand more often than not. You can make your own Wine bottles and prefixes though.

You can't expect newfags to grok Wine and Winetricks right off the bat though. Most of them barely even knew how Windows worked in the first place.

They'd honestly would have a better time sticking with windows then.

Yeah, no. Windows 10 is fucking 1984 on steroids. Nobody should be using that, no mater how much they like vidya.

As with most things, the Arch wiki is a good place to start learning how to Wine. The first thing you should try is making prefixes. You can tailor each prefix for a different app. Very handy.

Hi (((faggot)))

Or instead of being an autist you can just use PlayOnLinux which handles your Wine prefixes for you with a simple point and click UI.

...

And hasn't been updated in ages. The thing is practically in a coma.

Oh right, I forgot autists think anything that doesn't receive an update every day spontaneously stops working.

Nigger, that means new games are not being added and old shit is starting to break.

So that makes it impossible to use because it doesn't automagically download dependencies for your game? It's still a useful tool for managing prefixes and wine versions you stupid nigger.

This.
GNU parted hasn't been updated in 3 years, and it still werks

And Lutris is a better tool for making prefixes AND it's actually being worked on. PoL is quickly turning into a POS.

Will look into this. thanks, user!

I just downloaded it and I don't see anything in that application which allows you to download and use a different version of Wine on a per game basis. Also, PlayOnLinux maintains a lot of Wine patches that optimize compatibility with certain games. Does Lutris have this also? I also don't see a dependency downloader built in for Windows libraries.

Lutris has Wine patches for particular games. In fact, Lutris is the only way you can get OverWatch running in Wine.

How to I download different versions of Wine through Lutris and set the Wine version on a per game basis? The GUI does not have any obvious way to do this task.

Pretty sure you install the game and then you can adjust the prefix.

This happened to me IN Windows. I forget how I fixed it.

I thought prefix was just 32 bit vs 64 bit? That is not what I am talking about. Pic related is what I am referring to

In addition to this, I do not see any way to download dependencies in Lutris like in pic related

A bottle is what you mean. And yes, Lutris can do that too. You just have to set it up in the 'runners' menu.

lutris.net/files/runners/

A prefix can have other settings. Live a different set of tweaks from Winetricks.

When I click on "manage runners" all that comes up is a menu where I can install various applications. How does this enable me to download different versions of Wine?

Click the cog, then go to manage runners, go down to Wine, and then manage versions.

You need to install fonts. Forgot which ones.

Gallium 9 isn't quite native per se, but it's a much better solution that the usual way Wine has to Translate D3D into OpenGL, performance-wise.

To be precise, Gallium 9 runs on top of the Gallium API. That's still far less overhead than translating D3D9 into OpenGL on the fly.

I wanna fug her holy shit

There's a flatpak thread up.

?

Display code. Basically the thing that will make shit like HDMI/Displayport audio and Freesync work on Linux. Should land in 4.15.

DT, pls.

I thought the Loonix graphics maintainer had told them to fuck off because AMD wanted to dump 100k+ LOC and an ugly hardware abstraction layer on the codebase so they could sidestep Loonix's DRM and just slap their Wangblows driver on top of their HAL? What made them change their mind?

Wine is for linux users who need to run windows shit, it's not for windows users moving to linux.

dolus pls

My point wasn't to use Wine to get away from Windows. My point is nobody should be running Win10. Stick to 7 and move to freedom land when that goes EOL.

He rejected DAL, which got totally reworked into DC. Now it should be allowed into the kernel.

Those artifacts are triggering me so hard.

...

Can we make this meme slut the unofficial GIMP mascot?

No she's a boatslut. Get your own "girl removing her panties" image.

is there a wine for windows 10 so i can run all my win98 games that dont work even in compatibility mode?

No. Though Wine for Windows has been proposed a few times.

What about using it with mingw?

And one Wine update later and THIS starts working:

Noice
What API?

Pretty sure this game is DX11. There are still lots of graphical bugs, but the fact that this is running at all is an amazing feat for both Wine and Mesa.

Vanilla scented vulva.

How's the performance?

Daily reminder that playing your games with GPU passthrough in KVM or Xen with minimal features installed Windows Server 2016 as guest gives better performance than Wine and everything just works.

why not? if i had to run windows, I'd want to uncuck it file by file if I could.

Why? Wine is a great thing for Microsoft. It validates their whole existence - the idea that proprietary software should exist. If you have to have a free operating system, and are that technical, why not at least purchase a proprietary copy of MS office (their cash cow) and run it on wine. Its mitigation for the eventual mass security related panic as {China, Russia, *} start switching away from MS software to open source software for national security reasons. Nobody , beyond reactos, uses wine because they long the Windows Programming model. Using it implicitly validates microsoft as the creator. Using wine allows gamedevs to keep writing Windows Games and ignoring linux.

Wine is 100% awesome for MS. Its a carbon copy of something they are giving away free (Windows 10, Windows 8) that implicitly validates there existance, broadens the market for their cash cow, migitates future Open Source Dangers, and encourages people not to write native linux.

Done. Now Fuck ME. I am thinking about switching to a G4 Powerbook or ARM just to escape x86.

Playable. But there's a bug in mesa that makes the bloom effect too intense.

And it also makes you a Windows user. So no thanks.

Considering the main thing people are using Wine for is getting games to run (don't kid yourself, nobody trusts Wine with anything important), I'm not so sure that's true.

That would be a bit like saying nicotine gum is good for the cigarette industry.

Darksiders 2 runs really well with Gallium 9.

Um, no. Wine only recently only kinda started working with DX11 games. Plus, I'd rather devs use Wine to 'port' their older games than fucking eON.

What version are you running?

Missed you by a week, but I made this guide around the time I first started using Linux. Hopefully you find it helpful, even if it's dated. I'd probably recommend using PlayOnLinux or Lutris rather than installing ANYTHING right to your system through Wine.

Okay, so will I be able to play Half-Life 2 on Libreboot machine at 60 fps 1080p? Is there a real afterlife for older hardware since D3D9 performance is improved, or just some memery noticeable only on newest GPUs?

So I installed Wine Stagging, oibaf ppa, and Lutris. I dont know if now I can gaming now, specially when to activate Gallium 9, its said to activate it in winecfg in the stagging menu...but the problem is that the option doesnt appear. What did I miss?

2.19 staging. I'm not sure why anyone even bothers packaging Wine without CMST anymore.

Firstly, the only time you'll be able to use Gallium 9 is if your GPU driver is using the Gallium framework. This means either an AMD card running the open driver, or Nvidia running the Nouveau unofficial driver. In the case of Nvidia, it MIGHT be worth it only if you are running a Kepler card or maybe a 6XXX series.

All of that out of the way, Wine-Staging is Wine with the CMST patches, but not Gallium 9. You need to install Wine with the G9 patches for it to work.

I have and AMD card (RX 560 4G), and I presume that Im using open drivers. Now, you mean aplying patches? I just found this, but in the stagging part i dont understand what it means by "Apply all of staging onto vanilla wine"...whats that mean?

FUCK, forgot link.
github.com/sarnex/wine-d3d9-patches

The Steam client lets you browse the store from Wine again.

wow didn't think i'd ever see anybody mention exile ever. great game played it with my dad as a kid a ton.

You mean Holla Forums doesn't trust proprietary software. You can't just extend your autism to others.

Nignog, you cannot trust Wine or anything like it with mission critical shit. You cannot just assume the shit you NEED will always work in Wine. This has nothing to do with Stallman's reasoning.

Must have been a Steam update that fixed it. Wine put that on the 'will not fix' list.

It is. I used to play it and tanktics for hours on my grandma's computer back in the day. Came as part of a Galaxy of Games demo CD. Goddamn, those were good times.

like ?

anybody got a link to a torrent?

I don't know why you'd ask about Half-Life 2 since it has a Linux version, but I can tell you that Halo CE runs like a native game on my Core 2 Duo/4500MHD laptop (including the weird rendering bugs this GPU has on Linux). On my FX-6300/HD 7790 desktop, I can run Fallout: New Vegas and STALKER about as well as I can on Windows. Within 5 years, pre-DX10 games will all run equally or outright better in Wine. (Excluding maybe a few oddities like The Sims 2 which is a special pain to even boot for some reason.)

Within five years, I can see MS trying to shove Win10 'universal' apps down everyone's throats again. So that might work in our favor.

Devs are giant tools.
Stay far away from their forums.

You can download it for free from Spiderweb Software web page.

Wine is one of the most complicated open source projects, ever.. and it works great. i still can't belive that it works THAT well.

i was surprised as well, but it turns out that scmpoo was working since about 2010, or even earlier..

I think I got it installed well, but know I need a guide to know how to use it now. Any recommendation?

a thread died for this

You're still a Windows user~

I firmly refuse to install non-free software or tolerate its installed presence on my computer or on computers set up for me.

However, if I am visiting somewhere and the machines available nearby happen to contain non-free software, through no doing of mine, I don't refuse to touch them. I will use them briefly for tasks such as browsing. This limited usage doesn't give my assent to the software's license, or make me responsible its being present in the computer, or make me the possessor of a copy of it, so I don't see an ethical obligation to refrain from this. Of course, I explain to the local people why they should migrate the machines to free software, but I don't push them hard, because annoying them is not the way to convince them.

Likewise, I don't need to worry about what software is in a kiosk, pay phone, or ATM that I am using. I hope their owners migrate them to free software, for their sake, but there's no need for me to refuse to touch them until then. (I do consider what those machines and their owners might do with my personal data, but that's a different issue, which would arise just the same even if they did use free software. My response to that issue is to minimize those activities which give them any data about me.)

That's my policy about using a machine once in a while. If I were to use it for an hour every day, that would no longer be "once in a while" — it would be regular use. At that point, I would start to feel the heavy hand of any nonfree software in that computer, and feel the duty to arrange to use a liberated computer instead.

Likewise, if I were to ask or lead someone to set up a computer for me to use, that would make me ethically responsible for its software load. In such a case I insist on free software, just as if the machine were mine.

As for microwave ovens and other appliances, if updating software is not a normal part of use of the device, then it is not a computer. In that case, I think the user need not take cognizance of whether the device contains a processor and software, or is built some other way. However, if it has an "update firmware" button, that means installing different software is a normal part of use, so it is a computer.

Skype (or any nonfree noninteroperable communication program) is a special case because of its network effect. Using Skype to talk with someone else who is using Skype is encouraging the other to use nonfree software. (Doing so regularly is pressuring the other to use nonfree software.) So I won't use Skype under any circumstances. (See more information.)

But Wine is 100% free software.

fun police

>Requires third party shitware to handle input between OSes via network
When you can have both OSes running seamlessly, then WINE could be obsolete. Until then, it's pretty good.

...which is used to run proprietary software.

I don't see what fun is there to be had in violating the users' freedoms

Did you know that GNU is a free software implementation of Unix and GNU can easily be used to run proprietary Unix-based software? Wine is comparable to this. Wine is a free software implementation of various Windows APIs. It can be used to run proprietary Windows software and it can equally run free Windows software.

True this. How is running the Windows version of Krita in Wine unethical? It might be retarded, but it's not unethical.

The goal of GNU is to implement a UNIX-like general purpose operating system, and its philosophy is directly rooted in that of Free Software. That you can run proprietary software on it is irrelevant due to the nature of the project. Wine's purpose, on the other hand, is to run Windows programs, which in 99% of cases translate to running proprietary software, since free software for Windows almost systematically has a GNU/Linux counterpart. The same applies to ReactOS.
In short GNU = creating a Free Software computing environment, Wine = running botnet on GNU/Linux.

ever run a botnet?

While it would be nice if somehow all games past, present, and future, were made open source and libre, that's never going to happen, and I like games, even the proprietary ones. That said, ideally I would run those on a video games-only airgapped computer, and ideally they would run perfectly in a future fully-working release version of ReactOS so as not to require Windows.

As far as real software goes, there is some shit out there that is open source and libre but only released as a Windows binary and source tarball. Sometimes I'm either too lazy or too dumb to compile it myself, or it's GUI-only and made just for Windows. That shit is irritating as fuck, and I'd rather just run it in wine first, then if it fails, use a VM.

Crysis works pretty well. That said, there are a few minor visual issues such as incomplete sea-water rendering. Performance is mostly good I think, 40-60+, depending on setting/action. Don't know what I'd be getting on windows though.

Can someone fill me in on Gallium? And why Wine doesn't want to use it.

The goal of Wine is to implement the Windows API and its philosophy is directly root in that of Free Software.

Gallium is a re-implementation of DX9 that runs on top of the Gallium API. This still has some overhead, but it's a LOT faster than translating OpenGL from D3D9 on the fly.

The reason Wine does not make it a default part of the translation layer is because in order to use it, your driver has to be based on Gallium. And guess who doesn't play nice with Mesa and Gallium?

Gallium 9*

Seems everything I throw at Wine from the Xp days workz with minimal hassle. With vidya from the Vista/7 era it's about 60-75% of them work with no extra rituals to appease the machine spirits. Past that, it gets a lot more hit and miss.

CMST or G9?

Ubuntu does.

Using gallium-nine as the performance is a lot better. The water rendering issue happens in both though.

...

Once you shut the mouse acceleration off, FO3 and NV work really well.

With Ubuntu Mate Artfull, Lutris have helped a lot, know, I want to install Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion, and because Lutris only have available SoASE Trinity (And in Steam version only), I suppose I have to do it manually. But the think is when i install the game, When I start it, the screen goes black and gives error, and then I have to force exit and stop the application.

What should I do?

...

wine did not run halo:ce about a year ago. i consider that a shortcoming. also, the reason it does so well on older programs is because wine is based off the nt kernel source leak from 10 years ago.

That would not be legal.

No, it's not, at all, learn the history of WINE please holy shit

What libraries one should I add in winecfg for an app if that doesnt work? Example, is Hotline Miami GOG, that after installation it doesnt start and give an error (Which doesnt give report, forever loading it, so I cant give the error report). I tried multiple staging options but doesnt gives nothing, and in winetricks I installed multiple stuff too, but the same. Now I have taken notice of the librarie tab in winecfg, and perhaps adding the corrects libraries could solve it, but I dont know which ones to add...

I'm not very Holla Forums and tried to run MTGO on GNU/OS X or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus OS X using wine. Not only was it 10 times slower than running it on VMware with win 7 it also had no sound. 2/10 can't recommend.

Macfag here, why does stuff like PlayOnLinux even exist? I have been using Wineskin on macOS because it creates standalone app bundles, but since there is nothing similar on GNU/Linux I gave plain Wine a try. It worked without a hitch, I installed Civ IV, then added msxml3 with Winetricks and I was up and running in no time. The only thing I didn't do was give it its own Wine prefix because I only have this one program. What is the point of a bloated GUI frontend when all I have to do is 'wine setup.exe'?

It depends entirely on the application you want to run. The first thing to do would be to hit the AppDB and read up on the test issues and comments to see what people did. Then you can try reading the logs, sometimes the name of a DLL will be mentioned in the log and then you can search Winetricks for a library that includes the DLL. And of course sometimes there just isn't anything that can be done. It's not exactly a science, but you develop an intuition over time. On that topic, installing random stuff from Winetricks can actually make performance worse, so I would recommend that you keep track of what you have added and then when you get it working you try again with fewer things until you have slimmed down the setup.

1) for newfags
2) for lazyfags
3) for fags who can't into Windows it's been so long since they used it

Radio in New Vegas works now.

Playonlinux allows you to have several wine "prefixes" at once and easily. The idea is that this and easily available wine configurations will make gaming on linux easier. The fact that something that works is disparaged for having a GUI frontend is a testament to the 'tism on this board.

You set up your own wine configuration for yourself, great. Some people aren't retarded enough to do that and value their time. Go code your own audio driver in C

I don't dislike POL because it's a GUI, I dislike it because it's falling farther and farther behind. I actually prefer Lutris' GUI too.

Last time I tried playing this in Mesa, it wouldn't even render properly. I guess the driver has come a ways.

Any anons know of any books on this subject? The one by O'Reilly is wat too old.

I'm using Xubuntu, so I'm stuck with ALSA for now. Now is a good time to learn how to use jack, but in the meantime, I've used VSTi from LMMS with "Vestige" just fine.

Come on guys, GPU passthrough already

And be a fucking Windows user? Fuck off.

I just wanted to post this where it could be appreciated, I don't really have anything to add to the discussion. I use wine occasionally, and it almost always works flawlessly with only very very very tiny issues rarely. It's really come a long way since I first used to run a morse code tutor years ago.

Needs more airbrush

TIG BITTIES

It's not airbrushed, it's washed out for bright lighting.

Look at "her" "face" and tell me it's not airbrushed

Yeah, if you wanna audio production of any consequence, dive into jack. With qjackctl it's way easier than you may think.
For your former question, you can add KXStudio repo to your system:
kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories
It's made for Debian and Ubuntu variants, so should be fine with Xubuntu. Then do
apt-get install carla, and on Carla's options you'll find enable windows vst (32 or 64bit), then you can load them into carla as a rack and connect each input or output to your DAW channels through jack.
It's pretty easy. Most vst will work out of the box, and the ones that don't are usually UI bugs that I don't believe can be fixed.

maybe if that hag didn't look like a piece of fucking plastic

Yeah, if you concentrate on the part that life is tough and balls get full, that vapid look and all the signs of a meaningless creature she puts forth makes ya wanna blast some cream into her. But if you have any aesthetic sense, some other part of you just goes please run faggot.
We're such complicated fucking creatures it's just unbearable.

It's not airbrushed, it's foundation and highlighter.

nigger she'd be wearing something close to a wax mask if done irl

You'd be very surprised mate. These pics are highlighter + foundation.

that + Theo going full autism mode for wine 'relying on zero paging' for emulating older windows software.

I knew this board was full of faggots.

it's also a pita to setup

but i'm poorfag with single graphics card who also doesn't use intel chip with integrated graphics

I'd suggest VMware for that buddy

Looks like she's hit the wall.

Passthrough is magical
It's fucking insane

That you still are running windows.

I ran it for months and totally bit into the passthrough meme, until I started shifting valuable data around on the NTFS images and had it I/O lock on me and the cut/paste op shredded nearly 100GBs.
Thankfull I had atomic snapshots and quickly realized:
IM STILL FUCKING USING WINDOWS
THE HELL AM I DOING

No tux no bux full meme now.
Just get me glitchy dark souls 3 in wine and I'll be set for a lifetime.

Give q4wine a try? I can't vouch for it, but its the best pure wine gui.

It's clearly made in qt4 not wine.

I'd rather not

If you're not going to, I will.

It's great and unline wine it works. You basically create separate windows instances and installations for each game (or for multiple games) by choosing what libraries and what wine version you want to use.

Is there a way to make wine use another browser when a game launcher is embedding a webpage? I can't login while using the shitty one that comes with it.

Can wine run well on other architectures? Can I get my vidya working on Power9 assuming I win the lottery or something

Haha, good one user.

Dumb phoneposters everybody.

No it can't. Wine is not an emulator. If you want to use Wine and precompiled Windows software, you'll need to pair Wine with an x86 emulator.

Can you use Lutris for pirated games instead of Steam?

My thought is that you should gb2/g/ @ cuckchan

Seems accurate to me
